Garrett is tapped as Officer of the Year for second time
Burleson Police Officer Chaz Garrett must be doing something right. He was honored as the 2009 Rookie Officer of the Year, the 2011 Officer of the Year, and on Jan. 30, he was tapped as the 2013 Officer of the Year. That wasn't the only honor Garrett took home. He earned a Life Saving Award in connection with a suicidal person call and a police commendation award for a call involving a man asleep at the wheel that quickly escalated in to resisting arrest. Burleson hired Garrett in March 2009. The award winner is a field training officer, an intoxilyzer operator, an advisor for Burleson Police Explorer Post #4911, and is a member of the department's bicycle patrol. Read More |
Fire sprinklers may not be required in homes more than 6,000 square feet
Sprinkler systems may not be required in your home. Burleson City Council members will take a second look at a revision to the local amendments to the 2009 International Fire Code at the Feb. 17 meeting. At the Feb. 3 meeting council members voted 6-0 (councilmember Rick Green recused himself) to define the "building area" in a single family detached residence to be 6,000 square feet of air conditioned space. The current city ordinance defines the building area as the total s quare footage of a residence, regardless of use, that is under roof. Under roof includes porches, patios, and garages. The current ordinance requires an automatic sprinkler system to be installed throughout all buildings with a building area that is more than 6,000 square feet. That includes homes that are more than 6,000 square feet. The fire marshal and fire chief presented statistics concerning firefighter safety. To read the background on the proposed revision to the ordinance go to Item 4A of the council agenda. To hear the discussion, go to Item 2 of the work session video and Item 4A of the council meeting video. |
Sweet Valentines dressed up & danced at the BRiCk
It was a sweet sight to see fathers and daughters and mothers and sons (and whole families) flock to the BRiCk Feb. 8 for the City's annual Valentine Dance. They received corsages, had their pictures taken, enjoyed a pizza dinner, then did the cha-cha, hokey pokey, limbo, and more. This year the City's event staff offered two settings so that everyone could participate. To see more pictures, go to the Father/Daughter and Mother/Son album on the City's Facebook page. |
Go out for a walk or a jog on City trails
Do you feel like getting out and walking, jogging, or just enjoying the great outdoors? Trails are an important amenity for the City of Burleson's park system and the City is making great strides in acquiring the land necessary for future comprehensive trail linkages. Oak Valley Trail is complete and stretches from Oak Valley Park North to the intersection of Scott and Rigney Way in Burleson's Old Town. A second completed trail runs from the southern end of Chisenhall Fields to Bailey Lake, which will enjoy Phase 1 of its future improvements by mid-summer. A future trail will extend north from Bailey Lake to Warren Street allowing users to access Old Town from the southern part of town without having to drive. Concrete destination trails are not the only type of trail the City envisions. Nature areas such as the Shannon Creek Nature Preserve are already being planned. More to come on those improvements! |

Opt in for City's new Everbridge emergency notification system
How will you know if a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Burleson? The City of Burleson, in partnership with Everbridge, will contact you. If your name and landline phone numbers are currently listed in the white pages or yellow pages or you previously signed up for the City's Blackboard Connect system, you are automatically in the Everbridge system. Messages can be sent by cell phone, landline, email, text and more, but you must opt in to the Everbridge emergency notification system. Go to the Everbridge page on the City website. Choose how you want to be contacted, the number of phones and email addresses you want included, and the order in which you want to be contacted. You can include your home and work address, your child's school and/or daycare, or your parents/grandparents' home. You will be asked to confirm that you received the alert. Once you confirm, Everbridge will stop contacting you for that incident. You can set a "quiet time" for messages (tornado messages will be sent regardless of quiet times) and choose which weather warnings you want to receive. Read More |

Retail/restaurant space may develop at Gardens and Johnson
The look of the intersection of Johnson Avenue and Gardens Boulevard could be changing. At the Feb. 3 Burleson City Council meeting, members voted unanimously to approve the final plat for 2.5 acres at the southeast corner of the intersection. The applicant's goal is to subdivide the property in to three lots for the construction of a commercial building on each lot. This is 17,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space. The next step is for council to consider a site plan from the applicant. |
