Taste/smell of water unabated

The taste and odor issues with Fort Worth's water supply continue, according to the City of Fort Worth's water department. The department has increased the dosing of ozone and has begun blending the water from Lake Benbrook with water from Cedar Creek Lake. Ozone is used to disinfect the drinking water, and it can help with resolving taste and odor issues, but not in all cases. The City of Burleson buys its water from the City of Fort Worth. Other entities that may be experiencing the same issue include Bethesda Water Supply Corporation and the City of Crowley, to name a few. Read More

Opt in for City's new Everbridge emergency notification system

How will you know if a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Burleson? The  City of Burleson, in partnership with Everbridge, will contact you. If your name and landline phone numbers are currently listed in the white pages or yellow pages or you previously signed up for the City's Blackboard Connect system, you are automatically in the Everbridge system. Messages can be  sent by cell phone, landline, email, text message, fax, pager, and more, but you must opt in to the Everbridge emergency notification system. Go to the Everbridge page on the City website. Choose how you want to be contacted, the number of phones and email addresses you want included, and the order in which you want to be contacted. You can include your home and work address, your child's school and/or daycare, or your parents/grandparents' home. You will be asked to confirm that you received the alert. Once you confirm, Everbridge will stop contacting you for that incident. You can set a "quiet time" for messages (tornado messages will be sent regardless of quiet times) and choose which weather warnings you want to receive. When you opt in you can let first responders know if you have special needs, if you have resources that can be deployed in an emergency, and if you are certified (medical, recovery, etc.) to serve as a volunteer. Schoonover earns Fire Chief's Award

Robert Schoonover is known for making sure his fellow firefighters know the hazards they may face when entering a commercial building, but the children know him as the man who launched the idea for the City's first Burleson Fishing Adventures program in 2013. Schoonover was nominated for and won the Burleson Fire Department's 2013 Fire Chief's Award. Many local youth were able to enjoy a day of fishing and received free fishing poles and equipment. He also assists firefighters by giving them the information they need to know concerning hazards that exist in commercial buildings. Read More

Kroger wants to open Burleson store

The site plan was also approved unanimously, and a preliminary plat for Wilshire West Addition (south of John Jones Drive on the east side of Southwest Wilshire) was unanimously approved to accommodate construction of the store. The Kroger Marketplace is proposed as a 114,000 square foot store on 13 acres and would include a grocery, furniture, apparel and jewelry. A new signal light is also proposed on Hwy. 174. To see the discussion, go to the Feb. 3 meeting and click on Items 3A-3C.

Donations welcome at animal shelter

A caller asked if she could donate towels to the Burleson Animal Shelter. Yes! The Burleson Animal Shelter takes pride in being able to offer "comfort items" to every animal that comes through the door. It helps make their time in the shelter more pleasant and helps the staff learn more about the animals' behavior, thus aiding in adoptions. The shelter staff welcomes donations of chew toys, flea and tick spray, tennis balls, leashes, Kong toys, collars, rawhide chews, bleach, blankets, peanut butter, paper towels and fabric softener /sheets. The shelter is located at 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. It is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday.
