City hosts poster/video contest for campaign against bullying

The Mayor's Youth Council and Burleson Municipal Court are teaming up for Celebrate Kindness. The goal is to encourage children from kindergarten up to seniors to refrain from name calling and bullying. The contest - posters, drawing
s, paintings, and video - is open to all youth who live in Johnson County, including all Burleson youth who live in Tarrant County. Children, kindergarten-second grade and third grade-fifth grade, can submit a drawing (no larger than a poster board) that illustrates the contest theme. Those drawings can be dropped off at Burleson City Hall or the Ron Harmon Subcourthouse. The deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 21. Students in sixth-eighth grade and freshmen-seniors can draw, paint or create a video. The videos should be no longer than two minutes. All footage, music and materials must be original. Videos for the public service announcement can be submitted to the Burleson MYC Page on Facebook or put it on a flash drive or disc and turn it in at Burleson City Hall. Entries in all categories will be judged on creativity, neatness and originality. Prizes for first, second and third places will be awarded in each category. Read More

Two-hour class was the first taught in  mobile computer lab

A mobile computer lab rolled up in to the parking lot at the Academy at Nola Dunn Jan. 14 to teach basic computer skills to those who had registered for the class. The teacher was Marc Marchand, director of library services for the City. The students who participated in today's class were there for a variety of reasons. Some wanted to gain computer skills to help them in their jobs, others wanted to learn how better to use their home computers. The two-hour class was the first actual class ever taught in the Workforce Solutions of Cleburne mobile computer lab, a large RV-like vehicle with a computer classroom inside. Upcoming classes are slated for February 21 (Tuesday), March 28 (Friday), April 22 (Tuesday) and May 23 (Friday). Times are 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Read More

This is your last chance for the Shop on Wilshire Loyalty program drawing

Shirley Allen won a $50 gift certificate to Chicken Express as the City's Shop Wilshire winner. Her winning receipts were from Nov. 1-30. Wanda  Farrar won a $300 travel voucher and a 21-inch roll bag from First Travel of Burleson for October receipts. The name drawn on Jan. 21 will receive a prize package from Accents of  Burleson. Are you collecting receipts from Hwy. 174 businesses located between the I-35W split and Elk Drive? The final winner's name will be drawn this month. The Texas Department of Transportation is making median improvements to Hwy. 174 between I-35W and Elk Drive. During the construction, the City encourages everyone to keep visiting your favorite Wilshire businesses in the improvement area as part of the City's Shop on Wilshire Loyalty program. Collect five separate receipts from businesses in the improvement area, then deliver or mail the receipts to Burleson City Hall. Make sure your name and your phone number are included with the receipts. Receipts for the Jan. 21 drawing must be dated Dec. 1-31, 2013. For more information go to the Shop on Wilshire Loyalty page on the City website.
