Recount halted by petitioner after 600 of 1,748 ballots had been counted

The manual recount of the votes from the Nov. 5 City bond/charter election was halted shortly after 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the request of the petitioner. Approximately 600 of the 1,748 ballots had been hand counted. The votes during the manual recount reflected similar margins as the results that were canvassed by council on Nov. 18. The recount of the four bond propositions and the 12 charter propositions was requested by Philip Sanders. Three out of four of the bond propositions passed Nov. 5 by a margin of more than 60 percent. The bonds were for streets and public mobility, public safety radio equipment and a police station. The proposition for the restoration of the Nola Dunn gymnasium failed by more than 60 percent of the vote. Of the 12 charter propositions, the approval rate ranged from 88.5 percent to 63.3 percent. Sanders was required to put down a $300 deposit for the recount. He is also responsible for paying the 26 people who counted the ballots by hand. Counters were paid $10 an hour. To see the official results of the Nov. 5, 2013 bond/charter election, go to the City website.

Do you want to be in the parade?

Do you want to be in the Christmas parade? Visit the Burleson Rotary Club website for information about the Christmas "Parade of Lights." Parade participants will step off from Kerr Middle School at 6 p.m. on Dec. 7 and wind  through Burleson's Old Town. All floats are required to have Christmas lights and encouraged to have music. Entry fees in the four categories range from $10-$30. The parade will start on the Irene Street side of the school parking lot, turn right on Gregory Street, right on Johnson Avenue, and right on Ellison Street. The Christmas parade will then turn right at the intersection of Ellison and Warren Street (next to Community Bank and Burleson City Hall) and head back to the middle school parking lot. The parade will not go past city hall. For more information, call Lisa Keese at 817-447-7300.

Police are watching out for you
Holiday shopping, especially Thanksgiving weekend, can be chaotic. But the Burleson Police Department is there to help you. The police will be patrolling retail parking lots when you hit the stores for Black Friday specials on Thanksgiving Day and Friday, Nov. 29. Law enforcement's focus is on the major shopping areas. The traffic unit will be on the lookout for unsafe driving in an attempt to prevent crashes. That enforcement includes drivers who fail to yield right-of-way to drivers exiting the highway. As you rush from store to store, pay attention to your surroundings. Stay alert and watch out for those around you. For more tips, read the news release.

Hwy. 174 work suspended until spring

All lanes of Hwy. 174 (also known as Wilshire Boulevard) in Burleson will be open for the holidays between Thanksgiving and the New Year as part of the Texas Department of Transportation's commitment to minimizing the construction impacts on businesses and motorists. Last week the contractor, Austin Bridge & Road, placed temporary striping on the roadway lanes between Interstate 35W and Elk Drive. The overlay work will be conducted in the spring when warmer temperatures return. Median work will continue after the first of the year. The Hwy. 174 median improvement project is estimated for completion in 2014. For more information, email Natalie Galindo with TxDOT or call 817- 370-6744.

City's finale Dec. 7 is lighting of City's Christmas tree followed by fireworks

The corner of Johnson Avenue and Ellison Street will be bustling by 6:30 p.m.on Saturday, Dec. 7,as dancers and singers entertain the parade crowd on the City stage in the back parking lot of the Burleson Police Department. The all-day holiday festivities conclude at 7 p.m. with the lighting of the City's Christmas tree and a low aerial fireworks show choreographed to holiday music. The tree is outfitted with more than 10,000 lights, which will be turned on by Santa and his two helpers (the two third grade winners of the holiday coloring contest). After the tree lighting, Santa will head to his sleigh to listen to more Christmas wishes.

Change cleaning habits in the winter

Here's a tip from the City's environmental services division . . . Use the least-hazardous product to do the job when it comes to cleaning because in the cooler months, your house is more airtight. Toxic products can concentrate fumes in the air you breathe and can harm the health of you and your family. Young children are especially vulnerable to these effects. Water down your drain also carries residues from your home, and many harsh household chemicals are not removed by sewage-treatment or septic systems. Use safer cleaning products such as baking soda, borax and vinegar. Use baking soda to scrub. Vinegar makes good window wash (mix 1/4 cup with 1 quart warm water).
