Ani-Meals keeps pets of Meals-on-Wheels clients fed too

If you want to make a difference in the life of an elderly or homebound resident, and their pets, become a part of the Ani-Meals pet food program. Burleson touched base with Meals-On-Wheels in June 2008 to see if the non-profit agency could use food that was donated to the shelter (shelter animals are kept on a Pedigree program, so food donated to the Burleson shelter is not used for the rescued animals). Meals-on-Wheels was already exploring the idea of a pet food program, so the two combined efforts and the program to ensure that the pets of Meals-on-Wheels clients were fed was launched in 2009. Ani-Meals now includes eight communities within the Johnson-Ellis county area. The Burleson Animal Shelter helps coordinate the program and stores the donated pet food. On the first Saturday of each month, Meals-on-Wheels volunteers meet at the Burleson Animal Shelter on John Jones Drive to pick up and deliver the donated pet food to more than 10-20 Meals-on-Wheels recipients in Burleson. Victim assistance coordinator named to Fort Worth Business Press' 2013 Women of Influence

The woman who was named the Burleson Police Department's 2012 Ofelia Blair Character Award winner earlier this year earned another honor in October. Wanda Page, the department's victim assistance coordinator, was named to the 2013 Women of Influence by the Fort Worth Business Press. The honor was for Page's passion, Disabled Crime Victims Assistance. She was one of more than two dozen women nominated for the Great Women of Texas 2013. To see who else was honored by the business magazine, go to the Fort Worth Business PressWanda and her family founded the non-profit organization in 1999 with the mission to assist disabled crime victims and their families and promote awareness of their specialized needs to those who serve victims and the community. Two kinds of victims are served - those who become disabled as a result of a crime and those who are already disabled and become a victim of a crime. Read More

Police are watching out for you
Holiday shopping, especially Thanksgiving weekend, can be chaotic. But the Burleson Police Department is there to help you. The police will be patrolling retail parking lots when you hit the stores for Black Friday specials on Thanksgiving Day and Friday, Nov. 29. Law enforcement's focus is on the major shopping areas. The traffic unit will be on the lookout for unsafe driving in an attempt to prevent crashes. That enforcement includes drivers who fail to yield right-of-way to drivers exiting the highway. As you rush from store to store, pay attention to your surroundings. Stay alert and watch out for those around you. For more tips, read the news release.
