WASPs, Merchant Marine and Rosie the Riveters will be honored Nov. 9
Have you heard of the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP), Merchant Marine and Rosie the Riveter? The City is hosting the seventh annual Military Veteran Tribute at Veterans Memorial Park at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9. All three groups will be honored. To be a WASP, a woman had to have a minimum of 500 hours flying time, possess a commercial license, and have at least a 250 horsepower rating. She also had to successfully complete ground school instruction that included navigation, meteorology, radio and Morse code, use of firearms, military courtesy and discipline, military law and instrument training. The Merchant Marine (referred to as mariners) is a fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant vessels that transport cargo and passengers during peacetime. In time of war, men at the fronts depended on the mariners to transport bombs, gasoline, shells, ammunition, food, guns, vehicles, planes, medicine, and other materials. Mariners were subject to attack by submarine, surface raider, mines, bombers, kamikaze, and land-based artillery. Each mariner was assigned a battle station and manned guns or passed ammunition during battle. Rosie the Riveter was the face of an ad campaign during World War II to encourage women to do their patriotic duty and enter the workforce to fill the gaps left by men who enlisted. The Rosie the Riveter campaign was aimed at recruiting women to work in the munitions industry. For more about the event at 298 E. Renfro St., read the news release. |

Promises Ministries earns City award
First Baptist Church of Burleson's Promises Community Ministries Center was awarded the 2013 Jerry Allen Award for Excellence in Community Improvement. The award was created in 2008 to honor then-outgoing council member Jerry Allen. Where a small vacant white frame siding structure once stood at 140 N.W. Renfro St., First Baptist Church came in with a 5,998 square foot building. In the award presentation, staff said that the construction of the new Promises Center significantly improved the Old Town area at the northwest end of Renfro Street and that the center consists of a period style architecture and location that creates aesthetic quality and value to the city. The center has an extensive food pantry and clothes closet, training, and counseling. Read More |

Halloween can be scary for your pets
If someone came running at you making loud noises and carrying an object, what would you do? Your defense mechanism may tell you to strike back. Dogs may react in the same way if a child or adult approaches in what the dog may see as a threatening manner. Children and adults in costumes, toys and gadgets that make ghostly sounds, and a never-ending trail of people ringing the doorbell can be unsettling for your four-legged friends. If you do take your dog trick or treating, make sure they are wearing their collars and identification tags and that they are microchipped. You can get your pets microchipped at the Burleson Animal Shelter for $15, regardless of where the pet owner lives. The owner must provide proof of rabies vaccination. If your pet runs away, it is extremely important to stop by the Burleson Animal Shelter and view the animals at least once every 72 hours while the pet is lost. Owners need to make a report with the Burleson Animal Shelter staff. Read More |
