City will spray for mosquitoes Oct. 4-5
The City will conduct ground-based spraying for mosquitoes starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 (see map). The ground spraying, performed by trucks with foggers, will be conducted in targeted subdivisions within a one-mile buffer surrounding the 300 block of West Eldred Street. The City detected a positive West Nile Virus trap in the 300 block of West Eldred.The spraying will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m .In the event of rain or if wind speeds are above 10 miles per hour, the spraying will be rescheduled. This method of spraying targets flying mosquitoes that come in contact with the pesticide in the spray or fog. For more information about the ground spraying, call 817-426-9832. National Night Out was a hit Oct. 1
National Night Out 2013 was a success in Burleson, Texas! Members of the police department, fire department, fire marshal's office, neighborhood services, library, Mayor's Youth Council, Pct. 2 constable's office, H-E-B, and 7-11 visited 16 neighborhoods in Burleson in three hours. The grand finale was a party in the parking lot at Target. The retail store is a national sponsor of National Night Out. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support and participation in anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and to let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. The Fishing Adventures list is full
The registration list for Burleson Fishing Adventures, a free day of learning how to fish, is full. Each registered child must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Thanks to donations from sponsors, the first 50 children who registered at the BRiCk will receive a free fishing rod when they arrive at Bailey Lake on Oct. 5. The fun takes place 9 a.m.-noon at 280 W. Hidden Creek Pkwy. If you weren't among the first 50 to register, bring your rods and reels. Volunteers will teach the children how to cast and fish in this catch and release program. Participants will compete to see who can catch the longest fish and the shortest fish. |
Connect with Council Oct. 5
The City is hosting the fifth Connect with Council on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at the Burleson Public Library, 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. Light refreshments will be provided. Councilmembers Jerry Allen and Dan McClendon will field questions and talk about their top priorities. City council includes Mayor Ken Shetter, Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Gillaspie, and councilmembers Rick Green, Allen, Matt Aiken, McClendon and Ronnie Johnson. Trick or treat at Boo Bash Oct. 26
Things will get a little wild and crazy in Old Town on Saturday, Oct. 26, when the City hosts the sixth annual Burleson Old Town Boo Bash. The event, which includes free trick or treating, is for children from birth to 12 years old. The fun takes place 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on Ellison Street, between Main Street and Johnson Avenue (124 W. Ellison St.). All you have to do is dress your child up in his/her favorite costume and bring a trick or treat bag. Local businesses, churches and civic groups set up booths and decorate their vehicles for trunk-or-treat fun. Children enjoy free candy, games, bounce houses, a pumpkin patch full of free pumpkins to decorate, story time, and a costume parade. H-E-B hosts Safe Kids Fair Oct. 17
Mark your calendar for the City's Safe Kids Fair set for Thursday, Oct. 17, in the H-E-B parking lot. The fun is slated for 4 p.m.-6 p.m. at 165 N.W. John Jones Dr. The fair will include bicycle safety by the Burleson Police Department, tours of fire trucks by the Burleson Fire Department, the Fire Safety House and Pumper and Patches (a fully animated Dalmatian dog and fire truck robot that moves, speaks, listens, winks, and blinks) from the Burleson Fire Marshal, and the Burleson Public Library with information about the Safe Place program. Texas Health Huguley will bring the mobile bus and, in keeping with the theme of prevention of childhood obesity, there will be Zumba for Kids. MedStar ambulance has also signed on to provide education for youth and children. For more information call 817-426-9682. |
Sign up as a vendor for Oct. 12 Founders Day
Mock gunfights, staged shootouts, a Bumble Rumble Car Show, motorcycle show, arts and crafts, great food, and two stages of entertainment are on tap for the City 's 21st annual Founders Day. The celebration starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, and wraps by 6 p.m. in Old Town. The City's main stage will be in the city hall parking lot on Ellison Street. There will be a second stage at the corner of Ellison and Bransom streets. A short walking parade hosted by the Burleson Heritage Foundation is in the works. Vendors interested in being part of the 2013 Founders Day celebration can download a vendor application from the City website. Old Granbury Road permanently closes Monday at intersection with CTP
As part of an approved project plan produced many years ago for the Chisholm Trail Parkway (CTP), crews will permanently close Old Granbury Road where it intersects with the future Chisholm Trail Parkway at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013. Cul-de-sacs will be built where Chisholm Trail intersects with Old Granbury Road. The closure location is approximately one mile north of FM 1187 in southern Tarrant County. The Chisholm Trail Parkway project partners have worked together to prepare an alternate route for motorists who currently use Old Granbury Road. The recent extension of McPherson Boulevard by the city of Fort Worth, west to Old Granbury Road, will serve as the new route between FM 1187 and Old Granbury Road beginning Oct. 7. Signs noting the closure were activated Oct. 1. The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) has also contacted those affected by the closure. Permanent route markers will be installed this week. |
Library hosts Micro-A-Kon event
People in costume may stop traffic on Johnson Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 19, when the Burleson Public Library hosts Micro A-Kon 2013, the library's second annual miniature Anime convention. The event is slated for 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. This year's free event includes special guests Brian Delaney, artist; voice actor R. Bruce Elliott (Dragonball Z Kai, Full Metal Alchemist), Mangaka and voice actress Kristen McGuire, voice actress Whitney Rodgers (Dead Man Wonderland and Eureka Seven) and voice actress Lara Woodhull (Princess Jellyfish and One Piece). The day's schedule includes a Cosplay Contest at 10 a.m.; Manga/Art Panel at 11 a.m.; Voice Actor Panel at 12 p.m.; prize raffle at 1 p.m.; and autographs at 2 p.m. Read More |
Street improvements, public safety and gym restoration are on ballot
On Aug. 5, Burleson City Council approved Ordinance C-743-13 calling a bond election for the City of Burleson. The election date is Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013. Voters may vote for or against four propositions, including: the issuance of $12.84 million in tax bonds for street and public mobility improvements; the issuance of $1.8 million in tax bonds for the acquisition of public safety radio equipment; the issuance of $5 million in tax bonds for police station facility acquisition and improvements; and, the issuance of $750,000 in tax bonds for economic development/Nola Dunn gymnasium restoration. The City is hosting three public meetings. The locations include St. Ann Catholic Church, 100 S.W. Alsbury Blvd., Monday, Oct. 14; the lecture hall at Burleson High School, 100 Elk Dr., Oct. 15; and Seminar Room C at Centennial High School, 201 S. Hurst Rd., Oct. 22. City staff will do a PowerPoint presentation then field questions. All three meetings start at 6 p.m. The last day to register to vote is Oct. 7. Drug Take Back Event is Oct. 26
The City of Burleson, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will be hosting a Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the old City service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Residents may drop off unused, expired or unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal at this event. This includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. The Take Back Meds Event raises awareness of proper drug disposal, helps keep our drinking water safe, and protects from poisoning (children and pets) and drug abuse. City charter election is Nov. 5
The Burleson City Council called a charter election and a bond election for Nov. 5, 2013. The charter election includes 12 propositions that cover corporate and general powers, city council, ordinances, administration, municipal court, elections, finance, sale of City property, contracts and purchasing, franchise and public utilities, conflict of interest, and simplifying charter language and compliance with state law. When can you water?
When can you water your lawn with a sprinkler system or irrigation system? Residential addresses that end in even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8) may water on Wednesday and Saturday; residential addresses that end in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) water on Thursday and Sunday; and non-residential addresses (apartments, businesses, parks, medians, etc.) water on Tuesday and Friday. There is no landscape watering on Monday. Watering with irrigation or sprinkler systems, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., is banned year round. This includes residential and non-residential customers.
