Bring a rod and reel and learn how to fish with Burleson Fishing Adventures
Register your child for a free day of learning how to fish on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Burleson's own Bailey Lake. Children, kindergarten to fifth grade, are invited to the City's first Burleson Fishing Adventures. Each child must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Register by Sept. 30 at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Thanks to donations from sponsors, the first 50 children who registered (the 50th registered on Sept. 18) will receive a free fishing rod when they arrive at Bailey Lake on Oct. 5. The fun takes place 9 a.m.-noon at 280 W. Hidden Creek Pkwy. If you weren't among the first 50 to register, bring your rods and reels and a lawn chair to relax in under the trees. Volunteers will teach the children how to cast and fish in this catch and release program. Participants will compete to see who can catch the longest fish and the shortest fish. Read More |
Heritage Foundation hosts Founders Day Dinner Oct. 5 at Baker House
The Burleson Heritage Foundation is hosting the second annual Founders Day Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Baker House, 117 E. Ellison St. The reception starts at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Period dress is greatly encouraged, but is not required. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes (male and female). Door prizes are included in the night's events. Tickets, $20 each, are available at the Burleson Visitors Center at 124 W. Ellison Street. Center hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday. Tickets should be purchased by Sept. 28. Call 817-447-1575. |
Volunteers pick up more than 3,500 pounds of trash during Trash Bash
Approximately 368 people donned their rain boots, slipped on some gloves, and armed themselves with trash grabbers and trash bags for the Burleson Trash Bash on Saturday, Sept. 21. Groups fanned out across the city and picked up litter and debris in retail corridors, waterways, drainage channels, streets, parks and other public areas. The event, hosted by the City of Burleson and Keep Burleson Beautiful, brought in 190 bags - approximately 3,800 pounds - of trash. The most unusual items collected include car parts, a mattress, and couch cushions. Drug Take Back Event is Oct. 26
The City of Burleson, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will be hosting a Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the old City service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Residents may drop off unused, expired or unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal at this event. This includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. The Take Back Meds Event raises awareness of proper drug disposal, helps keep our drinking water safe, and protects from poisoning (children and pets) and drug abuse. Library hours change on Monday
The Burleson Public Library's hours will change Sept. 30. The changes affect Thursday and Saturday access to the library. Hours are currently 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday. The hours that will go in to effect on Sept. 30 are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday-Saturday. The library is closed on Sundays. The number of hours the library is open does not change from the current 54 hours a week. The Burleson Public Library is located at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. Library cards are available for free if you live or own property within the city limits of Burleson. Non-resident cards cost $25 for one year of unlimited checkouts from the Burleson library only (single user) or $50 for one year of unlimited checkouts from the Burleson library only (family membership). The library's collection includes 11 eReaders, 1,960 audiobooks, 54,427 books, 1,138 music CDs, 227 Braille books, 4,801 DVDs, and 1,518 magazines. The library is a member of the MetrOPAC, which gives Burleson Public Library card holders access to materials from 21 other participating libraries. Read More |
Johnson County Emergency Preparedness Fair is Sept. 28
The Burleson Fire Marshal's office will take its Fire Safety House and the Burleson Fire Department will send an engine crew to the Johnson County Emergency Preparedness Fair Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Cleburne Conference Center, 1501 W. Henderson St., Cleburne. The fair will include information and training on storm shelter rebates and installation, gas pipeline safety, electrical safety, how to build an effective 72-hour kit, dealing with animals in disaster, and more. Special guests include CBS 11's Larry Mowry and the Channel 11 severe weather team. ArmourGuard Storm Shelters has donated a safe room. The installation of that safe room will be given away at a drawing at the event (you must be a Johnson County resident and a homeowner to win the shelter). Target, 7-11 and H-E-B join National Night Out campaign in Burleson
More than half a dozen apartment communities, an equal number of neighborhoods, and Target are on board to host parties for National Night Out 2013 on Tuesday, Oct. 1. New community partner 7-11 and H-E-B are also signed on to come together, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., to raise awareness about organizing and fighting back against crime. Community resource officers as well as the police department's command staff, bicycle officers, fire department, fire marshal's office, neighborhood services and City leaders are slated to visit as many National Night Out get-togethers as possible in three hours. The City is hosting the fifth Connect with Council on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at the Burleson Public Library, 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. Light refreshments will be provided. Councilmembers Jerry Allen and Dan McClendon will field questions and talk about their top priorities. Library hosts Micro-A-Kon event
People in costume may stop traffic on Johnson Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 19, when the Burleson Public Library hosts Micro A-Kon 2013, the library's second annual miniature Anime convention. The event is slated for 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. This year's free event includes special guests Brian Delaney, artist; voice actor R. Bruce Elliott (Dragonball Z Kai, Full Metal Alchemist), Mangaka and voice actress Kristen McGuire, voice actress Whitney Rodgers (Dead Man Wonderland and Eureka Seven) and voice actress Lara Woodhull (Princess Jellyfish and One Piece). Street improvements, public safety and gym restoration are on ballot
On Aug. 5, Burleson City Council approved Ordinance C-743-13 calling a bond election for the City of Burleson. The election date is Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013. Voters may vote for or against four propositions, including: the issuance of $12.84 million in tax bonds for street and public mobility improvements; the issuance of $1.8 million in tax bonds for the acquisition of public safety radio equipment; the issuance of $5 million in tax bonds for police station facility acquisition and improvements; and, the issuance of $750,000 in tax bonds for economic development/Nola Dunn gymnasium restoration. The City is hosting three public meetings in October. The locations include St. Ann Catholic Church, 100 S.W. Alsbury Blvd., Monday, Oct. 14; the lecture hall at Burleson High School, 100 Elk Dr., Tuesday, Oct. 15; and Seminar Room C at Centennial High School, 201 S. Hurst Rd., Tuesday, Oct. 22. City staff will do a PowerPoint presentation then field questions. All three meetings start at 6 p.m. The last day to register to vote is Oct. 7. City charter election is Nov. 5
The Burleson City Council called a charter election and a bond election for Nov. 5, 2013. The charter election includes 12 propositions that cover corporate and general powers, city council, ordinances, administration, municipal court, elections, finance, sale of City property, contracts and purchasing, franchise and public utilities, conflict of interest, and simplifying charter language and compliance with state law. The City is hosting three public meetings in October. The locations include St. Ann Catholic Church, 100 S.W. When can you water?
When can you water your lawn with a sprinkler system or irrigation system? Residential addresses that end in even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8) may water on Wednesday and Saturday; residential addresses that end in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) water on Thursday and Sunday; and non-residential addresses (apartments, businesses, parks, medians, etc.) water on Tuesday and Friday. There is no landscape watering on Monday. Watering with irrigation or sprinkler systems, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., is banned year round. This includes residential and non-residential customers. No positives for West Nile Virus
City staff has been trapping and testing for mosquitoes since the beginning of May, and, thus far, none of those tests have come back positive for West Nile Virus. The City will ground spray for mosquitoes in areas where a mosquito pool (a pool is defined as standing water) confirms West Nile Virus or where a human case of West Nile Virus is confirmed. The City is following the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The City continues to take preventative measures with larvaciding. Be proactive with the 4 D's!
