Don't pass school bus when children are loading or unloading
The police department's traffic section and marshals from municipal court are teaming up with Durham School Services to educate drivers about stop signs and red lights that bus drivers activate when children are getting on or off the bus. A marshal will be riding the school bus. When he sees a driver pass a bus that has the stop sign and/or red lights activated, the marshal will radio a traffic officer and that officer will stop the violator. Drivers may not proceed until the school bus resumes driving; the bus driver signals other drivers to proceed; or the visual signal is no longer activated. It is Durham policy that bus drivers will not signal other drivers to proceed. Illegally passing a school bus is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $500 to $1,250. If the driver is convicted a second time or a second offense is committed within five years, the fine increases to $1,000-$2,000. Read More |

Sept. 18 is the deadline to apply for City hotel/motel occupancy tax funds
If you host an event that attracts tourism and supports the hotel industry, the City opened the application process for those interested in applying for hotel/motel occupancy tax funds. The deadline to file is 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The guidelines for funding and the application are posted on the City website. A qualifying event/program has to take place between October 2013 and September 2014. The City collects a local hotel occupancy tax, as authorized by the Texas Tax Code which amounts to a 7 percent tax on each hotel room that is occupied in Burleson. There are four hotels - Days Inn, Best Western, Comfort Suites and America's Best Value Inn- inside the Burleson city limits. The funds the City collects each year are used to support qualifying programs that attract tourists and results in "heads in beds" at local motels. The selection committee will decide if the application meets the standards of the law, is a high quality event, attracts overnight visitors to Burleson, promotes tourism and a positive local economic benefit, and is a special event or a sporting event.
