Police sergeant earns state Citizen Police Academy honor
Burleson Police Sgt. Brian O'Heren was awarded the Ray Ramon Award for Officer of the Year at the Texas Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association convention July 26. O'Heren, an almost 12-year veteran of Burleson, took over the local Citizen Police Academy program from a former Ray Ramon award winner in 2009. O'Heren has coordinated five basic and three advanced Citizen Police Academies. The Citizen Police Academy provides a bridge between the officer in the car and the citizens in the field. O'Heren heads up the free basic 10-week academy each summer, then a 10-week advanced academy every other year. The Citizens Police Academy is open to men and women, 18 or older. O'Heren was nominated by Police Chief Tom Cowan, Commander Chris Havens, and Burleson Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association representative Sherry Toomer. Read More |
Yes, you can water the foundations
We have hit the triple digit temperature month and rain is scarce in the 10-day forecast. Burleson is under Stage 1 water restrictions, but, foundations may be watered up to two hours on any day using a handheld hose, soaker hose or drip irrigation system. The drip irrigation system must be placed within 24-inches of the foundation and can not produce a spray of water above the ground. If you have any questions, please call the Municipal Service Center at 817-426-9830 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. |

Ramps are focus of Hwy. 174 work
Wheelchair accessible ramps are the focus of the construction on the State Highway 174 median improvement project in Burleson. The Texas Department of Transportation project was slowed due to the recent rain. Once the ramps are completed, the contractor, Austin Bridge & Road, will start the median work that had been scheduled to start in June. Two lanes will be open in each direction during the median work. The contractor will only work on one median intersection at a time. TxDOT's median improvement project on State Hwy. 174/Wilshire Boulevard in Burleson got underway in February 2013. The improvement area stretches from the Hwy. 174/I-35W split to Elk Drive. The project is expected to be complete by April 2014. Improvements include replacement of the center turn lane with a raised curb center median with turn lanes, an overlay of the existing pavement, and landscaping. The center median stops at Elk Drive, but the project overlay continues to FM 731/John Jones Drive. For questions about the Hwy. 174 Median Improvement Project, call Randy Bowers with the Texas Department of Transportation, at 817-202-2900. |

No positives for West Nile Virus
City staff has been trapping and testing for mosquitoes since the beginning of May, and, thus far, none of those tests have come back positive for West Nile Virus. The City will ground spray for mosquitoes in areas where a mosquito pool (a pool is defined as standing water) confirms West Nile virus or where a human case of West Nile virus is confirmed. The City is following the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The City continues to take preventative measures with larvaciding. Please be proactive with your own 4 D's! Get all of the details on the City website. If you have a concern about mosquitoes in your area, please call the Municipal Service Center, 817-426-9830 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. |
