Half a dozen have won prizes in City's Shop on Wilshire Loyalty program
Are you collecting receipts from Hwy. 174 businesses located between the I-35W/Hwy. 174 split and Elk Drive? The winner of the sixth prize drawing for the Shop on Wilshire Loyalty program is Alice Kelley. She received two half-hour music lessons from Tune City Music at 344 S.W. Wilshire Blvd., Suite I, Elk Plaza Professional Center. The store owner is Joe Confessore. Kelley's name was drawn at the July 15 Burleson City Council meeting. The Texas Department of Transportation is making median improvements to Hwy. 174 between I-35W and Elk Drive. During the construction, the City encourages everyone to keep visiting your favorite Wilshire businesses in the improvement area as part of the City's Shop on Wilshire Loyalty program. Collect five separate receipts from businesses in the improvement area, then deliver or mail the receipts to city hall prior to the third Monday of the month. Make sure your name and your phone number are included with the receipts. Receipts for the August 19 drawing must be dated July 1-31. The winner's name is drawn at the second city council meeting each month. Local Wilshire businesses donate the prizes. Go to the Shop on Wilshire Loyalty page for the details. |

Mosquito control takes team effort!
City staff has been trapping and testing for mosquitoes since the beginning of May, which is also the month that city council approved an amendment to the 2012-2013 fiscal year budget. That amendment covers the cost of hiring a mosquito control technician and contracting with a private company to ground spray for mosquitoes in areas where a mosquito pool (a pool is defined as standing water) confirms West Nile virus or where a human case of West Nile virus is confirmed. The City is following the guidelines of the CDC. The City also emphasizes the 4 D's: DEET, Dress, Dusk/Dawn and Drain. All mosquitoes begin their lives in standing water so prime breeding sites include discarded tires left outdoors, poorly maintained bird baths, clogged rain gutters, unused swimming pools and plastic wading pools, pet dishes, or any other container capable of holding water for more than a few days. The City is also giving away mosquito larvicide or "dunks" to residents who live inside the city limits of Burleson and who would like to begin a personal mosquito-control program. |
