Metal Shop brings '80s heavy metal music to Hot Sounds tonight!
You might hear Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister and Scorpions tonight, June 21, for the City's Hot Sounds of Summer concert in Old Town Burleson! Metal Shop, an '80s hair band, is bringing "an outrageously funny spoof of 1980s Heavy Metal music" to the City stage that will be set up at the corner of Wilson and Ellison streets (124 W. Ellison St.). Metal Shop brings the singing, dancing, 80s costumes, and comedy. The sidewalks in Old Town must be kept clear during the concert. Bring your hand fans and plenty of water to stay cool during the free 90-minute concert that kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Come early and get some great food at the restaurants in Old Town. Picnics are allowed at Hot Sounds but glass bottles are discouraged, for safety reasons. |

Sign up for safe room rebate list
If you are interested in a rebate to install a safe room in your home, Burleson residents can start to sign up for a waitlist next week. The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) just released the call schedule for residents from all 16 NCTCOG counties. The signup is in alphabetical order, by county, so Collin County is first. Burleson is in two counties. Johnson County residents can call in starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, and Tarrant County residents can call in starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 30. The waitlist will not close. To call in, you must log on to the NCTCOG safe room website on or after the scheduled time and provide your name, address, and contact information. If you do not have Internet access, call the Emergency Preparedness Department at NCTCOG at 817-695-9235 and leave a message with your name, phone number, address and the county that you live in. Residents may not sign up for the waitlist before the date it opens for that county. The timeframe for notification of approval for a rebate could take three-18 months. You must be pre-approved prior to the installation of a safe room if you want to participate in the safe room rebate program. Read More |
Blue recycling bags are allowed!
You can use blue plastic curbside recycling bags in Burleson. Monday, Burleson City Council members approved an amendment to an ordinance that now allows residents to use the translucent blue plastic bags, in addition to the current green recycling bins, for weekly curbside recycling collection. The bags, which can be purchased at local retail stores, cannot be less than 33 gallons in size and you can only stuff 35 pounds or less in each bag. The change came about after public works staff responded to a question from a resident about the use of the plastic bags for recycling. City staff contacted the contractor, Community Waste Disposal (CWD), who agreed to collect the blue bags. The blue bags must be placed with the recycling bin, completely separated from any household garbage that is placed at the curb for solid waste collection. Read More |

Toyota may be coming to Burleson!
Sam's Club wasn't the only big news at the June 17 Burleson City Council meeting. The council conducted a public hearing to consider a specific use permit and commercial site plan for a 13.03 acre Toyota Auto Sales and Service Dealership l ocated at the northeast corner of East Hidden Creek Parkway and I-35W. The proposed development is for a 45,500 square-foot Toyota of Burleson dealership for the sale and servicing of Toyota passenger vehicles. The dealership would be operated by Gulf States Toyota, which is reported to be the second largest international franchised distributor of Toyota vehicles. Gulf States operates approximately 150 dealers in the five states including Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. The retail sale of Toyota parts and accessories would also occur at this location. For more details, go to Page 104 of the June 17 city council agenda and view Item 3A of the video of the June 17 meeting. |

Mosquito abatement is team effort!
City staff has been trapping and testing for mosquitoes since the beginning of May, and, so far, none of those tests have come back positive for West Nile Virus. In May, city council approved an amendment to the 2012-2013 fiscal year budget to cover the cost of hiring a mosquito control technician and contracting with a private company to ground spray for mosquitoes in areas where a mosquito pool (a pool is defined as standing water) confirms West Nile virus or where a human case of West Nile virus is confirmed. The City is following the guidelines of the CDC. The City also emphasizes the 4 D's: DEET, Dress, Dusk/Dawn and Drain. Prime breeding sites include tires left outdoors, poorly maintained bird baths, clogged rain gutters, unused pools, pet dishes, or any other container capable of holding water for more than a few days. The City is also giving away mosquito larvicide or "dunks" to residents who live inside the city limits of Burleson and who would like to begin a personal mosquito-control program.
