Median work starts this monthtraffic cones

You are seeing work on the median on Hwy. 174 this month! The Hwy. 174 median improvement is a project of the Texas Department of Transportation and its contractor, Austin Bridge & Road. Two lanes will be open each way during the median work. The contractor will only work on one median intersection at a time. In May, the contractor began placing a seal coat on Hwy. 174. A seal coating provides a moisture barrier between the roadway and the final surface. This will help extend the life of the roadway. Toward the end of the project, the contractor will then place an asphalt overlay on the roadway to complete this process. TxDOT's median improvement project on Hwy. 174/Wilshire Boulevard in Burleson got underway in February 2013. The improvement area stretches from the Hwy. 174/I-35W split to Elk Drive. The project is expected to be complete by April 2014. Improvements include replacement of the center turn lane with a raised curb center median with turn lanes, an overlay of the existing pavement, and landscaping. The center median stops at Elk Drive, but the project overlay continues to FM 731/John Jones Drive. For questions about the Hwy. 174 Median Improvement Project, call Randy Bowers with the Texas Department of Transportation, at 817-202-2900.

Mosquito abatement is team effort!
City staff has been trapping and testing for mosquitoes since the beginning of May, and, as of June 5, none of those tests have come back positive for West Nile Virus. In May, city council approved an amendment to the 2012-2013 fiscal year budget to cover the cost of hiring a mosquito control technician and contracting with a private company to ground spray for mosquitoes in areas where a mosquito pool (a pool is defined as standing water) confirms West Nile virus or where a human case of West Nile virus is confirmedThe City is following the guidelines of the CDC. The City also emphasizes the 4 D's: DEET, Dress, Dusk/Dawn and Drain. All mosquitoes begin their lives in standing water so prime breeding sites include discarded tires left outdoors, poorly maintained bird baths, clogged rain gutters, unused swimming pools and plastic wading pools, pet dishes, or any other container capable of holding water for more than a few days. The City is also giving away mosquito larvicide or "dunks" to residents who live inside the city limits of Burleson and who would like to begin a personal mosquito-control program. You have tools to weather the storm

Since April 2008, the City has alerted residents to thunderstorm and tornado warnings via an emergency phone notification system. The notifications automatically post to the City Facebook page and to the City Twitter page. The City also Tornado has outdoor warning system sirens (11 in Burleson's 26 square miles). City officials strongly encourage citizens to buy weather radios with S.A.M.E. technology (programming to receive local alerts). The notifications for weather are by phone and by email. If you are in the system, you will be alerted to tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, chemical emergencies, a state emergency,  a national emergency, or other emergencies. Alerts are pre-recorded telephone messages made to the publicly-listed phone numbers of residents and businesses in the city. To learn how to be prepared in the event of severe weather, go to the City's Emergency Management page and click on the preparedness guide at the bottom of the page. To sign up for Blackboard Connect emergency phone notifications, go to the City's Warning Weather Alerts page. And, if you want to see where the City's 11 outdoor warning system sirens are located, go to Warning Sirens.
