'If you like it, lock it' - outsmart thieves

"If you like it, lock it." That's the Burleson Police Department's catchy slogan for getting you to start thinking about how not to be a victim. What's on your prevention checklist? Park in a high traveled area. Lock your vehicle. Take your valuables with you. And remove from plain sight the things you can't carry with you. Always assume a thief is watching you and outsmart them. A thief is always looking for an easy, quick mark, and that mark is an unlocked vehicle and plenty of valuables within easy reach to choose from. If you like it, lock, it. Read More

You may see some spectacular flames

Atmos Energy crews and contractors will oversee three controlled natural gas flarings on Tuesday, May 7, beginning at approximately 9 a.m. The locations include at the site of the future Chisholm Trail Parkway southwest of CR 904 and CR 1022 in Cleburne; south of CR 902 (Wildflower Road) and east of CR 1017 (Windmill Road) in Cleburne; and northwest of Hwy. 174 and CR 904 (Indian Hills Road) in Joshua. Atmos will be replacing sections of natural gas pipeline in these areas as part of normal, routine maintenance operations in preparation for the new Chisholm Trail Parkway. Flaring is a standard industry practice to safely burn natural gas that must be removed from a specific section of pipeline so that employees can work on the pipe. People in the area will notice a large, controlled flame, moderate noise and the smell of natural gas for up to 24-36 hours. Area fire departments, the sheriff's department, police departments, city officials and 911 operators have been advised of the flaring.

Discourage mosquitoes and ratsRat

Rats and mosquitoes have more than one thing in common . . . you don't want them and they need water to thrive/survive. To cut down on your chances of seeing rats, don't place trash outside until shortly before pick-up; don't leave plastic garbage bags outside overnight; remove bird feeders if rats can reach bird feed; do not leave dog or cat food outside (store in secure container); don't give rats avenues to eat or drink (no standing water, which also goes for mosquito prevention); repair leaky faucets; remove water storage areas; don't provide hiding places for rodents; remove debris; thin vegetation to allow daylight in; and store wood piles 18 inches off the ground. If you don't want to feel the bite of a mosquito, get rid of standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys or any other container where mosquitoes can breed; empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels and potted plant trays at least once a week to eliminate potential mosquito habitats; keep swimming pool water treated and circulating; drain temporary pools of water or fill with dirt; stock ornamental ponds with fish that eat mosquitoes; water lawns and gardens carefully so water does not stand for days; repair any leaking plumbing and outside faucets; screen rain barrels and openings to water tanks or cisterns; and, keep drains and ditches clear of weeds and other yard waste so water will not collect.
