Burleson Police will host National Police Week open house May 14
The Burleson Police Department is hosting its annual open house on Tuesday, May 14, 3 p.m.-6 p.m., in the front parking lot at 225 W. Renfro St. The open house will feature displays by the SWAT team, hostage negotiators, Citizens Police Academy, Citizens On Patrol, traffic unit, Burleson Police Officers Association, school resource officers, community resource officers (crime prevention) and public safety communication specialists. Police staff will offer tours of the police department. At 4 p.m. the department's honor guard will present the colors and conduct a firing party to pay respects to all the law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Tri-County Auto Burglary and Theft Task Force will be at the open house with information about vehicle burglaries and auto thefts. Johnson County Crime Stoppers will also be available to answer questions.The Burleson Lions Club will offer free hot dogs and drinks to those who attend the open house. Read More |
Early voting for city council election starts Monday, April 29
Early voting for the May 11 Burleson City Council election will take place at Burleson City Hall, 141 W. Renfro St. Early voting is Monday, April 29-Saturday, May 4, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Monday-Tuesday, May 6-7, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Election Day voting is also at Burleson City Hall. The hours on Saturday, May 11, are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. One of the three races on the ballot is contested. Shannan Sutter filed for Place 3 against incumbent Jerry W. Allen. The other races on the ballot include Stuart Gillaspie, Place 1, and Dan McClendon, Place 5. Take Back Meds event is Saturday
The City of Burleson, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will be hosting a Take Back Meds Event on Saturday, April 27, at the old City service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Residents may drop off unused, expired or unwanted medications, in both pill and liquid form, for safe disposal at this event. This includes over-the-counter as well as prescription drugs. The drugs collected on April 27 will be incinerated. Read More |
Teen Court brings home honors
Members of the Burleson Teen Court participated in the Texas Teen Court Competition April 13 and brought home a third place award. The competition was hosted by Texas Wesleyan Law School. The team of Jennifer King and Trey Johnson (attorneys) and Natalie Purvis (witness/defendant) won third. The team of Blair Roy and Tabithia Leon (attorneys) and Joshua Yarian (witness/defendant) placed seventh out of 20 teams. The competition gives volunteer youth attorneys, bailiffs, clerks and jurors the opportunity to conduct mock trials with Class C misdemeanor defendants from local Teen Courts. The competition is designed to test the research skills, questioning, and improvisational ability of the teens, as well as knowledge of the law and criminal procedure. Teen Courts are an alternative sentencing program for teens who are charged with Class C misdemeanors. Read More |
Today is deadline for Paw Pals
The deadline to apply for the Burleson Animal Shelter's Paw Pals Animal Care Academy is today. The shelter is hosting the academy for students who are entering the sixth grade in the 2013-2014 school year. The class is limited to 15 students who must either live in Burleson or attend school in Burleson. This is a free four-week course. Class is 90 minutes, noon to 1:30 p.m., every Saturday, June 1-June 22. The sessions include bite prevention and responsible pet ownership, grooming, animal training and graduation. Applications may be picked up at the Burleson Animal Shelter at 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. or find it online. Shelter hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday, and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday. Are you ready for a discount? Join the BRiCk on Monday, May 6, for the center's open house at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Register for classes, camps, swim lessons and more between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. on May 6 and you will receive a 10 percent discount. You must go to the BRiCk in person to receive the discount. Don't miss out on free tree seedlings!
The City of Burleson's parks and recreation department, neighborhood services department, and Keep Burleson Beautiful will host the City's annual Arbor Day ceremony on Friday, April 26, at 10 a.m. at Clinkscale Elementary, 600 Blayke St. City staff will distribute 400 free tree seedlings - live oak, red oak and bald cypress - on a first-come, first-served basis. |
Volunteer for the Trash-Off April 27
Burleson's Great American Cleanup Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off is Saturday, April 27, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Participants who are younger than 18 must be supervised by an adult. Volunteers will be removing litter and debris from retail corridors, residential drainage channels and streets so be sure to bring gloves. Seniors, don't miss the free Senior Resource Fair at the Activity Center
The City's Be Healthy Initiative is hosting a Senior Resource Fair at the Senior Activity Center today, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. The fair features bone density screenings, chair massages, blood pressure and blood glucose checks, exercises for older adults, foot health and door prizes. The center is located at 216 S.W. Johnson Ave. |
Connect with Council April 27
The City is hosting the third Connect with Council April 27, 10 a.m.-noon, at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. Alsbury Blvd. Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Gillaspie and Councilmember Ronnie Johnson will field questions and talk about their priorities. Firefighters will offer tours of Fire Station #1. The city council includes Mayor Ken Shetter, Gillaspie, and councilmembers Rick Green, Jerry Allen, Matt Aiken, Dan McClendon and Johnson. Go to the City Council page on the City website. |
Sign up for Junior Fire Academy!
Students who are entering the fifth grade in the fall of 2013 are invited to apply for a spot in the Burleson Fire Department's Junior Fire Academy. Class is June 10-13, 8 a.m.-noon. The academy is limited to 12. Participants receive their own bunker gear, tour the fire stations, and learn about disaster safety, extrication, fire safety, fire hydrants, fire hoses, and search and rescue. Applications are available starting today at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. Alsbury Blvd., and online on the Junior Fire Academy page. Register for Summer Fun  Camps May 6
If you are looking for something for your children ages 6-12 years old to do this summer, sign up for a weeklong session of Summer Fun Camp through the BRiCk! Registration starts May 6, which is also the 10 percent off day! On May 6, you can register between 8 am. and 9 p.m. at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Meet the Counselors Night is June 5, 7 p.m., at the BRiCk. The sessions begin June 10 and run weekly through the final camp session beginning Aug. 19. The fun is 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday. Each week includes a field trip. The fee ranges from $117 to $133 for each week. Single day registration is available. Bring your recyclables May 4
The City is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Electronic Recycling and Paper Shredding event on Saturday, May 4, at the City's old service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and is only available to residents who live inside the Burleson city limits (proof of residency including a City water or solid waste bill is required). Household hazardous waste items are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the City of Fort Worth's Crud Cruiser is full. On the electronics side, there will be a fee for TVs ($10) and computer hard drive erasing ($10). All other electronic items may be dropped off free of charge. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo here May 3
The City of Burleson and La Buena Vida de Burleson will host the annual Cinco de Mayo festival Friday, May 3, 6 p.m.-11 p.m. The event will take place in Old Town Burleson in the parking lots between Eldred and Ellison streets (near First Baptist Church, 317 W. Check your health at May 17 fair The City will host the second Burleson Community Health Fair on Friday, May 17, 3 p.m.-6 p.m., at Hidden Creek Golf Course. The City will offer healthy food choices for attendees, and several City departments will be participating in the fair. Vendors will provide activities, screenings, information, education, and other resources. Participation in the activities around the health fair will earn you "Be Healthy Bucks," which will be good toward a chance at a door prize. If you pre-register, you will get additional "bucks" upon your arrival. Go online to pre-register for free! |
