As clocks spring forward March 10, sprucing up of cemetery will begin
Daylight saving time means the City's cemetery, Burleson Memorial Park, will get spruced up. The clocks spring forward one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10. All items that are not permanently attached to the memorial or marker will be removed after the time changes. Items will be removed from gravesites the week of March 10-16. The removal includes fresh or artificial flowers and other items that are hanging, sitting or lying on the gravesite. This cleanup occurs twice a year, always as daylight saving time begins (March) and ends (November). For a copy of the flower rules and regulations, contact Lucas Blessing Funeral Home, 518 S.W. Become a Paw Pal at Burleson Animal Shelter's free four-week academy
The deadline to apply for the Burleson Animal Shelter's Paw Pals Animal Care Academy is Friday, April 26. The shelter is hosting the academy for students who are entering the sixth grade in the 2013-2014 school year. The class is limited to 15 students who must either live in Burleson or attend school in Burleson. This is a free four-week course. Class is 90 minutes, noon to 1:30 p.m., every Saturday, June 1-June 22. The sessions include bite prevention and responsible pet ownership, grooming, animal training and graduation. The Paw Pals Animal Care Academy application, which requires a one-page essay, must be signed by the student's parent or guardian and turned in by April 26. Applications may be picked up at the Burleson Animal Shelter at 775 S.E. John Jones Dr. or find it online. Shelter hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday, and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday. Are you collecting Wilshire receipts?
Are you collecting your receipts from Hwy. 174 businesses located between the I-35W/Hwy. 174 split and Elk Drive? The second prize drawing for the Shop on Wilshire Loyalty program will take place at the March 18 Burleson City Council meeting. Peggy Harkins was the first Shop on Wilshire Loyalty program winner. TheTexas Department of Transportation is making median improvements to Hwy. 174 between I-35W and Elk Drive. During the construction, the City of Burleson is encouraging everyone to keep visiting your favorite Wilshire businesses in the improvement area as part of the City's Shop on Wilshire Loyalty program. Collect five separate receipts from businesses in the improvement area, then deliver or mail the receipts to city hall prior to the third Monday of the month throughout the duration of the project. Those receipts will be placed in a drawing that will be conducted at the second Burleson City Council meeting each month. Prizes include items from local Wilshire businesses.  Hot Sounds of Summer Concerts kick off May 31 with Steve Story
The slate of bands for the City's Hot Sounds of Summer 2013 Concert Series is set! The free Friday night concerts in Old Town Burleson kick off May 31 with the Steve Story Band (Texas swing), followed by Le Freak (1970's disco) on June 7, Two Tons of Steel (rockabilly country) on June 14, Metal Shop (1980's hair band) on June 21, and the Quaker City Night Hawks (rock and roll) on June 28. The 90-minute concerts start at 7:30 p.m. More details to come! |
Learn computer skills at the library
If you are interested in learning basic computer skills, sign up for the "Learn Basic Computer Skills" classes at the Burleson Public Library. Classes are on Monday and Wednesday, starting Monday, March 18, and ending Wednesday, May 8. Classes are 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Space is limited, so sign up now by calling 817-426-9207. Bring your families to City's Far Out Family Fun Camp Out April 12!
Bring your family and friends to the City's Far Out Family Fun Camp Out and enjoy nature at its finest! All ages are welcome at the overnight event that starts at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 12, and wraps up at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, in the field behind the Chisenhall Fields Sport Complex baseball fields. A hot dog dinner with marshmallows for dessert will be served. Don't forget your tent, flashlight and bug spray. Open flamed lanterns, grills and pets are not allowed at the campout. City hosts Resource Fair for seniors
The City's Be Healthy Initiative is hosting a Senior Resource Fair at the Senior Activity Center April 26, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. The fair features bone density screenings, chair massages, blood pressure and blood glucose checks, exercises for older adults, foot health and door prizes. Celebrate Arbor Day with free seedling
The City of Burleson's parks and recreation department, neighborhood services department, and Keep Burleson Beautiful will host the City's annual Arbor Day ceremony on Friday, April 26, at 10 a.m. at Clinkscale Elementary, 600 Blayke St. City staff will distribute 400 free tree seedlings - live oak, red oak and bald cypress - on a first-come, first-served basis. Become a registered voter by April 11
You must be a registered voter in order to mark a ballot for the May 11 Burleson City Council election. To vote May 11, residents must register by April 11. If you don't know if you are registered to vote, go to the Texas Secretary of State page. Voter registration must be done through the county in which you live. Contact the Johnson County Elections administrator at 817-556-6197 or go to the Johnson County website. Contact the Tarrant County Elections administrator at 817-831-8683 or go to the Tarrant County website. The three seats on the May 11 City ballot include Place 1, held by Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Gillaspie; Place 3, held by Councilmember Jerry Allen; and Place 5, held by Councilmember Dan McClendon. Applications are available for 2013 Summer Citizens Police Academy
What does it take to work in law enforcement? Find out when the Burleson Police Department hosts the 10-week Citizens Police Academy beginning June 6 at 6:30 p.m. at 225 W. Renfro St. The academy is every Thursday, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., with the exception of July 4. Graduation is Aug. 15. Class is limited to 25 students. The basic information, application, waiver and consent for criminal history check forms are available online on the City website, at Burleson City Hall, and at the police department. Youth with artistic talent are wanted for City's Law Day Art Contest
Burleson's Municipal Court is looking for some good local artwork created by students for Law Day 2013. Law Day 2013 is May 1 and it is sponsored by the American Bar Association. The Law Day Art Contest is sponsored by the ABA's Young Lawyers Division. Last year's contest focused on videos. This year the contest features three categories - drawings, paintings and photographs. The contest is open to students from kindergarten through high school. The 2013 theme is "Realizing the Dream: Equality for All." Students are asked to highlight the role of the nation's courts in a constitutional democracy and to foster public understanding of the judiciary. The deadline to enter is April 5. Check out a variety of books at April Friends of the Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Library book sale will be Friday, April 19, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Burleson Public Library. The sale will have a large variety of books including hobbies, self-help, cookbooks, travel, religion, adult fiction and nonfiction, as well as numerous young adult and children's books. All books will be offered for $1-$2 with specials offered during the sale. If you are a member of the Friends of the Library, you are invited to a special presale April 18, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. To find out more about the Friends of the Library, go the group's page on the City website. Don't miss Family Field Day March 23
Registration for the City's Family Field Day at Bartlett Park starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23. All events will wrap up before the Bunny Daze Easter Egg Hunt in Bartlett Park at 1:30 p.m. There are six field day events for all ages - children and parents. They include Rapid Radar (how fast and accurately can you throw), Crime Catcher (how fast can you run without dropping the egg off the spoon), Great Getaway (can you and a partner get away quickly when your legs are tied together for the three-legged race), Fireman's Drill (how quickly can you get ready to put out a fire), House Fire (how quickly can you extinguish the fire in a "burning house") and Fire Hose Tug-of-War. Contestants who compete in all six events will be eligible for a prize. Awards for the Family Field Day events will be presented following the Bunny Daze Easter Egg Hunt. Learn more about Hidden Creek Golf Course at the Burleson Public Library!
What does the City do for you? Find out at the Burleson Public Library! The display in the case in the front foyer features Hidden Creek Golf Course. This is a year-long education program. A different department is featured each month. Public Works tooted its horn in January, followed by Engineering Services in February. The Engineering display is now at Burleson City Hall. Other participating departments include the library, police, parks and recreation, neighborhood services, community development, municipal court, fire department/fire marshal, city manager and city secretary, finance/human resources/information technology, and economic development. Be sure to stop by the library, 248 S.W. Johnson Ave., at least once a month to learn more about what the City does for you! |
Hunt Easter eggs at Russell Farm
Join Joey the Easter donkey at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, for this year's first ever Easter Egg Hunt at the City's Russell Farm. Joey will be ready to pose for pictures (bring your own camera) and lead in a petting zoo. This event is for children from birth to 4 years old. Russell Farm is located at 405 W. CR 714. The 30-acre historic farm on the south side of Burleson was donated to the City of Burleson in October 2011 by the Boren family for historical, art and agricultural/natural uses. Charlie and Louise Boren transformed the farm into the Russell Farm Art Center. The property was renamed Russell Farm when the farm was donated to the City.
