Fun Camp registration starts Feb. 1

Sujmmer Fun Camp 2012

Are you looking for something to keep your pre-teens occupied during spring break? Start signing up for the BRiCk's Spring Fun Camp on Feb. 1. The camp is March 11-15, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. The weekly cost is $115 for individuals who are BRiCk members or $130 for nonmembers. Daily rates are available. Campers will participate in group games, arts and crafts, swimming, rock climbing, team building events and much more. This camp is for students from 6-12 years old. Call 817-426-9104 for details.

Senior Center hosts dance Jan. 11

The Burleson Senior Activity Center is hosting a dance on Friday, Jan. 11, 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Admission is $5. The dance is geared for seniors who are 50 years of age and older and who enjoy country music and dancing! The Taste of Country Band will be performing. The center, located at 216 S.W. Johnson Ave., hosts a monthly dance for seniors. For more information call 817-295-6611.

Learn where to recycle electronics

Did Santa bring new electronics for Christmas? Do you need to recycle the old ones? The City's Environmental Services division has an Electronic Recycling page on the City website that includes a link to computer equipment manufacturers and a link to the companies' websites for instructions on how to recycle computer equipment. There is also a link to lists of electronic recyclers who can assist you with all other electronic equipment. Locally, the Goodwill store on Hwy. 174 in Burleson will accept all electronics, including computers, monitors, accessories, video games, TVs, and radios. Best Buy on the I-35W service road also accepts most consumer electronics but you may be charged a recycling fee for TVs and computers. If you don't want your old TV you can put it at the curb for trash collection.

The first City Focus newsletter of 2013 is in your mailboxes and on the City website! The January City Focus was inserted in City utility bills starting at the end of December. The two-page full color newsletter includes dates for upcoming events, a profile of the City's Employee of the Year, news about Wilshire Boulevard, and information about the May 2013 Burleson City Council election. Find out where you can get a flu shot

If you are concerned about the flu and don't know where to get a vaccine, Tarrant County Public Health suggests you go to www.flu.gov. Enter your zip code for the places near you that are offering flu vaccines. Flu season typically peaks in January or February. Those most susceptible to getting the flu include seniors (those age 65 and older), children (especially those younger than 2), and people with chronic health conditions.

Don't irrigate in freezing temperatures

Watch out for your neighbors and customers by making sure that your irrigation systems are turned off when the temperatures dip below freezing. Irrigation systems are required to have rain and freeze sensors in compliance with state design and installation regulations. Any commercial or industrial irrigation system installed on or after June 1, 2007, must be equipped with rain and freeze sensing devices. Any commercial or industrial irrigation system installed before June 1, 2007, must be retrofitted with similar rain and freeze sensors. Any residential irrigation system installed on or after Sept.1, 2007, is required to have rain and freeze sensors. Check your system out to make sure you are in compliance!

Firefighters offer free basic CPR class

CPR class at Burleson Fire DepartmentBurleson firefighters are offering a free basic CPR class to the public on Saturday, Jan. 26, 9 a.m.-noon, at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. Alsbury Blvd. You must be at least 15 years old to participate. This class will not certify participants in CPR. The course walks an attendee through very basic and easy hands on CPR, basic first aid, and instruction on an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The Jan. 26 class is open to the first 30 people who sign up. Call Fire Station #1 at 817-426-9176, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. This is the second free CPR class that the fire department has offered to the public.

Connect with Council Jan. 19

The City is hosting the second Connect with Council on Saturday, Jan. 19, 10 a.m.-noon, at the Senior Activity Center, 216 S.W. Johnson Ave. Councilmembers Rick Green (Place 2) and Dan McClendon (Place 5) will host the informal meeting. The elected officials will talk about their top priorities and listen to the concerns of residents and businesspeople. Light refreshments will be provided. The council includes Mayor Ken Shetter, Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Gillaspie, and councilmembers Green, Jerry Allen, Matt Aiken, McClendon and Ronnie Johnson. Are you registered to vote in Texas?

Do you know if you are registered to vote? Go to the Texas Secretary of State's Vote Texas website to find out. You need your Texas driver's license number, your Voter Unique Identifier (VUID) which appears on your voter registration certificate, or your first and last name. You are eligible to register to vote if you are a United States citizen; you are a resident of the county where you submit the application; you are at least 18 years old on Election Day (May 11); you are not a convicted felon (you may be eligible to vote if you have completed your sentence, probation, and parole); and, you have not been declared by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be either totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.

Learn basic computer skills at library

Did you know that you can learn basic computer skills at the Burleson Public Library? Sign up now for classes that start Monday, Jan. 14, at the library, located at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. The two-hour classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 2 p.m., Jan. 14- March 6. Call the library at 817-426-9207 amd reserve your spot!

Support the city's Wilshire Boulevard businesses and reap the rewards!

This is the month to start collecting those receipts! Starting in January, the Texas Department of Transportation will be making median improvements to State Highway 174 (Wilshire Boulevard), between I-35W and Elk Drive. During the construction process, the City of Burleson is encouraging everyone to keep visiting your favorite Wilshire businesses in the improvement area as part of the City's "Shop on Wilshire" Loyalty program. Collect five separate receipts from businesses in the improvement area, then deliver or mail the receipts to city hall prior to the third Monday of the month throughout the duration of the project. Those receipts will be placed in a drawing that will be conducted at the second Burleson City Council meeting each month. Prizes include items from local Wilshire businesses. Get your tickets for the Father/Daughter & Mother/Son Valentine dance on Feb. 9

Fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, make a date for Saturday, Feb. 9, for the City's annual Father/Daughter and Father Daughter Mother Son Dance 2012 Mother/Son Valentine Dance! Dinner, dancing, pictures and corsages are included in the advance ticket price of $16 per couple or $25 per couple at the door. Tickets will be available at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd., starting today, Jan. 11. The fun is slated for 6 p.m.-9 p.m., Feb. 9, at the BRiCk. A DJ will be spinning tunes from across the decades. Games include the ever popular limbo (adults compete against adults and children compete against children) and the three-legged race, which pairs the parent with the child. The parks and recreation staff takes pictures of each couple and those pictures are then emailed to the parents. For pictures from the 2012 event, go to the Father/Daughter Mother/Son Valentine Dance album on the City Facebook. 

Candidates for Burleson City Council seats can pick up packets Jan. 23

If you want to represent your neighbors on the Burleson City Council, packets for the May 2013 City election are available starting Jan. 23 at Burleson City Hall. Packets will be available at the council meetings on Feb. 4 and Feb. 18. The filing period is 8 a.m. on Jan. 30 to 5 p.m. on March 1 (Monday-Friday). Election Day is Saturday, May 11.The three seats on the ballot include Place 1, held by Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Gillaspie; Place 3, held by Councilmember Jerry Allen; and Place 5, held by Councilmember Dan McClendon. All terms are for 2 years.  Council meets on the first and third Mondays and in special meetings and workshops throughout the year. See news release

The Burleson Public Library can help you through the free Ancestry Library Edition, the largest online family history resource available. All you need is a Burleson Public Library card (free to thoseAncestry Library Edition  who live in Burleson or who own property in Burleson). Ancestry Library Edition has access to documents that record the lineage of people from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and more. Ancestry Library Edition's passenger list collection includes information about the arrival of more than 100 million passengers at more than 100 American ports. There are census records; birth/marriage/death records; United States military records dating back to the 1600s; immigration, emigration, passport and naturalization records; and court, land and probate records. Ancestry Library Edition also includes biographies and histories, photographs and maps, postcards, charts, message boards, and more. 

Most City facilities will close for Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday Jan. 21

Trash and curbside recycling will be collected on Monday, Jan. 21, but City facilities will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. Hidden Creek Golf Course will be open, 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m., but the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk), library, animal shelter, and Senior Activity Center will be closed. The Burleson City Council meeting scheduled for Jan. 21 has been moved to Tuesday, Jan. 22. The work session is at 6 p.m. and the general meeting is at 7 p.m. at city hall. Read More

If you want to learn more about law enforcement, go to the Programs and Services page and learn how you can become involved in Neighborhood Watch, Citizens Police Academy, Citizens On Patrol, Police Explorers, Wise Eyes, and National Night Out.

Do you need to contact councilmembers, city manager's office, municipal court, environmental services, or utility customer service? The name, title, phone number and email for every councilmember and City staff member is on the City website, www.burlesontx.com. Simply click on Contact Us at the bottom of the home page.

Watch city council and Planning and Zoning Commission meetings on video

 Do you want to know how a vote or discussion went at a Burleson City Council meeting or budget workshop? View the video, live or at your leisure, on the City website. Click on the meeting date, then click on the item you are interested in. There is also a tab for streaming video of the Planning and Video camera with white border   Zoning Commission. Official minutes of council and commission meetings and workshops and work sessions are not posted on the City website until the city council and/or commission members have approved those minutes at their next scheduled meeting.
