Hwy. 174/Wilshire median improvement project is expected to start next week

The Texas Department of Transportation's median improvement project on State Hwy. 174/Wilshire Boulevard is expected to start next week with a projected completion date of April 2014. Improvements include replacement of the center turn lane with a raised curb center median with turn lanes, an overlay of the existing pavement, and landscaping. The contractor doesn't expect the actual median work to begin until May 2013. The inside lane in each direction will be closed for the median construction. All existing signalized intersections will remain, with the exception of Lorna Street. The Lorna Street signal will be removed and a median will prevent left turns, but Lorna will be maintained up to Hwy. 174, allowing right turns. A new signalized intersection will be midway between Hidden Creek Parkway and Elk Drive to serve the Burleson Independent School District administration building and Durham Transportation bus barn on the north, as well as retail traffic on the south side. All other median openings will be a hooded left, which allow left turns in but not left turns out. Those locations include between Newton Street and Exchange Street, between Exchange Street and Gardens Boulevard, and into the west end of the Walmart parking lot, between the intersection with Hidden Creek Parkway and the new intersection between Hidden Creek Parkway and Elk Drive. Water supplies are dropping steadily in Tarrant Regional Water District area

Water supplies are dropping about 1 percent every two weeks in the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD), which supplies water to an 11-county area, including TarrantPhoto of the Lawn Whisperer  County. Burleson buys its water from the City of Fort Worth. Fort Worth is supplied by the TRWD. At the current rate, the TRWD will reach the Stage 1 trigger of the water district's drought plan by mid-January. The city of Burleson was under Stage 1 restrictions Aug. 29, 2011-May 4, 2012. The plan is designed to slow the drop in lake levels - and does so primarily by limiting outdoor watering with sprinklers and automatic irrigation systems to no more than two days per week. The best way to save water in the winter is to turn your irrigation system off and limit watering to once every other week - if it hasn't rained. The TRWD has posted a video on YouTube. You can also learn more by going to the Save Tarrant Water website.

Support the city's Wilshire Boulevard businesses and reap the rewards!

This is the month to start collecting those receipts! Starting in January, the Texas Department of Transportation will be making median improvements to State Highway 174 (Wilshire Boulevard), between I-35W and Elk Drive. During the construction process, the City of Burleson is encouraging everyone to keep visiting your favorite Wilshire businesses in the improvement area as part of the City's "Shop on Wilshire" Loyalty program. Collect five separate receipts from businesses in the improvement area, then deliver or mail the receipts to city hall prior to the third Monday of the month throughout the duration of the project. Those receipts will be placed in a drawing that will be conducted at the second Burleson City Council meeting each month. Prizes include items from local Wilshire businesses.
