Community will honor military veterans at sixth annual Veteran Tribute Nov. 10

John Hince, the 6th District Commander of the American Legion for Texas will be the guest speaker at the City of Soldier and family, Vet Tribute 2011 Burleson's sixth annual Military Veteran Tribute on Saturday, Nov. 10. The 6th District includes Post #235 in Burleson. The ceremony is at 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 298 E. Renfro St. The focus this year is on Purple Heart recipients and those warriors who were wounded in combat. A monument will be dedicated to Purple Heart recipients. The ceremony includes the posting of colors, presentation of a ceremonial wreath, a firing party, "Taps," and "Salute to the Armed Forces." Read More

Learn about Hwy. 174 improvements, and schedule, at Nov. 13 meeting

How will State Hwy. 174/Wilshire Boulevard, between I-35W and Elk Drive, look in 2014? On Tuesday, Nov. 13, representatives from the Texas Department of Transportation, project contractor Austin Bridge & Road, as well as City staff will be at Burleson City Hall for a public meeting to discuss the construction schedule for the upcoming improvements to State Hwy. 174 between I-35W and Elk Drive. Improvements include replacement of the center turn lane with a raised curb center median with turn lanes, an overlay of the existing pavement and landscaping. The meeting is a come-and-go format, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m., at 141 W. Renfro St. Work on the project is expected to begin after Thanksgiving. The work zones could be in place as early as Monday, Nov. 19. This project is expected to take 15 months. The center median on Hwy. 174 was removed in 1986. The center median stops at Elk Drive, but the project overlay continues to FM 731/John Jones Drive. Read More

Saint Nick is hosting Breakfast with Santa at the BRiCk, Saturday, Dec. 1 
Christmas is coming to Burleson on Saturday, Dec. 1. The fun includes the City's 13th annual Breakfast With Santa, the Burleson Rotary Club's Reindeer Run, Burleson Rotary Club Breakfast with Santa 2011 Christmas parade, and the City of Burleson's Christmas tree lighting and fireworks. The day starts off with Santa and his elves hosting Breakfast with Santa, 7 a.m.-11 a.m., at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Santa picked a new and bigger location this year to host his breakfast! Saint Nick's elves will be up early flipping pancakes, cooking sausage, and making the orange juice and coffee. Santa will be in the BRiCk's Winter Wonderland until 11 a.m. to hear Christmas wishes. Bring your camera to take those memorable pictures with Santa. Children can also visit Santa's workshop to make their own holiday crafts. Advance Breakfast with Santa tickets are available at the BRiCk starting now at $4 for children/$5 for adults. Tickets at the door Saturday, Dec. 1 are $5 for children/$7 for adults. Watch for street closures Nov. 9-10

There will be several street closures on Saturday, Nov. 10, in conjunction with one City event and two private events in Burleson. The City will close Scott Street at B&G Boulevard from 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, for the City's sixth annual Military Veteran Tribute at Veterans Memorial Park, 298 E. Renfro St. The Military Veteran Tribute is 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m. on Nov. 10. The Bennett's 2nd Annual East Renfro Car Show is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Nov. 10. The location is 1465 E. Renfro. There are no street closures for the car show, but drivers need to slow down near the intersection of Renfro Street and Houston Road since patrons will be crossing back and forth across Renfro. And the Burleson Wine Crawl is 4 p.m.-10 p.m. on Nov. 10 on Bufford Street in Old Town. Street closures include Warren Street at Bufford Street, Bufford at Wilson Street and Warren at Eldred Street. The street closures for the wine crawl will be noon-midnight on Nov. 10.

On Nov. 10, walk for freedom and to raise awareness of childhood obesity

The Burleson Mayor's Youth Council is helping host the  second annual Freedom Walk on Saturday, Nov. 10, in conjunction with the Burleson Heritage Foundation and the City's sixth annual Military Veteran Tribute. The walk will start at Burleson City Hall, 141 W. Renfro St., and end at Veterans Memorial Park, 298 E. Renfro St. Registration is at 12:30 p.m. and the walk begins at 1 p.m. The 45-minute walk will end at the site of the Military Veteran Tribute, which begins at 2 p.m. The Mayor's Youth Council is hosting the walk to help raise awareness for childhood obesity. Firefighters offer free basic CPR class

There are still seats available for the free basic CPR training offered by the Burleson Fire Department. Firefighters are offering basic CPR classes to the public starting on Saturday, Nov. 17. The two hour class begins at 1 p.m. at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. Alsbury Blvd. Participants must be at least a freshman in high school. This class will not certify participants in CPR. The course walks an attendee through very basic and easy hands on CPR and it also includes basic first aid. The Nov. 17 class is open to the first 30 people who sign up. Call Fire Station #1 at 817-426-9176, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. This class is free to the public.

Burleson Senior Activity Center hosts Christmas Craft Fair Saturday, Dec. 1
The Burleson Senior Activity Center is hosting a Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday, Dec. 1, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the center at 216 S.W. Johnson Ave. Do your last minute shopping for unique homemade crafts and gifts for your friends and relatives. If you are a crafter and you are interested in selling your unique handmade items, call the Burleson Senior Activity Center at 817-295-6611 to reserve an 8-foot by 5-foot space. Spaces are $10.
Residents planted 100 trees at the Military Veteran Grove dedication
Approximately 100 people turned out to plant 100 trees in the City's Military Veteran Grove at Centennial Park on Scarlet Military Veteran Grove Dedication 2012 Sage Parkway Saturday morning. The grove consists of 100 native trees planted in a geometric pattern. The planting is designed to highlight a future time capsule at the center of that pattern. The trees will honor the men and women who serve or who have served in the armed forces. Centennial Park was dedicated in April 2012. It is the City's first universally accessible park. The Military Veteran Grove was dedicated Nov. 3, 2012, as part of the City's yearlong Centennial celebration. Library hosts Micro A-Kon convention

The Burleson Public Library will play host to a Micro A-Kon convention on Saturday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. There will be panel discussions with professional artists and voice actors, autograph sessions with the actors, free sketches from the artists, a cosplay contest, prize raffle, live board and card game demonstrations, and a video game room.

The special guests include artists Kristen McGuire and Katrina McMillan; voice actress/director Caitlin Glass ("Full Metal Alchemist" and "Ouran High School Host Club"); voice actress Jad B. Saxton ("Soul Eater" and "Baccano!"); and voice actress Whitney Rodgers ("Dead Man Wonderland"). Read More

Police and firefighters will square offRed vs Blue HFTK benefit game 2011  Dec. 8 in benefit game for Heart For The Kids

The bats will be cracking Saturday, Dec. 8 in a benefit softball tournament for Heart For The Kids. Burleson firefighters and Burleson police officers will face off at noon at Hidden Creek Sports Complex, 295 E. Hidden Creek Pkwy. Admission is one unwrapped toy. This is the 12th year that the Burleson Professional Fire Fighters Association Local #4025 and Burleson Police Officers Association have hosted the event. The wish list from Heart For The Kids includes bicycles, scooters and toys for children of all ages - newborn to 17 - as well as wallets, purses and jewelry for older teens. The nonprofit assists children who live in the city and those who attend Burleson schools. Read More 

Most City facilities are closed Nov. 22-23; no trash/curbside recycling Nov. 22

City facilities will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 22-23; Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 24-25; and Tuesday, Jan. 1, in observance of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. There will be no trash or curbside recycling collection on Thursday, Nov. 22; Tuesday, Dec. 25; and Tuesday, Jan. 1. Hidden Creek Golf Course will close at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The library will be closed Nov. 22-24 for Thanksgiving. The Burleson Animal Shelter will be open Saturday, Nov. 24. The Compost/Mulch/Recycle Center will be open the Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24, after Thanksgiving. For the hours of operation for each facility, click here.

Residents purged homes of household hazardous waste, electronics and paper
On Saturday, Nov. 3, the City of Burleson hosted a HHW,  November 2012 Household Hazardous Waste, Electronic Recycling and Paper Shredding event at the old City service center at 133 N. Main St. You had to reside inside the city limits to participate. This is the first time that paper shredding has been added to the event, which generally occurs in May and November of each year. Make plans for the City's annual tree lighting and low aerial fireworks show 
The corner of Johnson Avenue and Ellison Street will be bustling by 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, as dancers and singers entertain the crowd - from the Burleson Rotary Club's Parade of Lights - on the City stage in the back parking lot of the Burleson Police Department. The Dec. 1 Christmas festivities conclude at 7 p.m. with the lighting of the City's Christmas tree and a low aerial fireworks show. The City's Christmas tree is outfitted with more than 10,000 lights, which will be turned on by Santa and his two helpers (the two third-grade winners of the City's holiday coloring contest). Singers and dancers will entertain until Santa and his helpers can break away from the Parade of Lights and make their way back to the City stage. After the tree lighting, Santa will head to his sleigh to listen to more Christmas wishes. Read More

Official minutes of council and commission meetings and workshops and work sessions are not posted on the City website until the city council and/or commission members have approved those minutes at their next scheduled meeting.
