Decorate a pumpkin at Burleson's Old Town Boo Bash Saturday, Oct. 27
Free miniature pumpkins will be available for the first 1,500 trick-or-treaters at the City of Burleson's fifth annual Burleson Old Town Boo Bash on Saturday, Oct. 27. The fun, which includes free trick or treating for children from birth to 12 years old, takes place 6 p.m.-8 p.m., on Ellison Street, between Main Street and Johnson Avenue (124 W. Ellison St.). Free games, candy, bounce houses, a petting zoo, entertainment, a costume parade and a Halloween tale spun by Mayor Ken Shetter are all on tap for the celebration. Local businesses, churches and civic groups set up booths and decorate their vehicles for trunk-or-treat fun for children in costume. The Burleson Police Department's Citizens On Patrol, Police Explorers, and the police department's bicycle officers will be at the event to help coordinate foot traffic and patrol the area. If a child becomes lost, go to the City stage in the Burleson City Hall parking lot. Streets in the area will be closed between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Those streets include Ellison, from Main Street to Johnson Avenue; Wilson at Ellison; Warren at Ellison; and Bransom at Ellison. Connect With Council on Oct. 27
The City is hosting the first of several town hall meetings, dubbed Connect With Council, with the first one slated for Saturday, Oct. 27, at 10 a.m. at the BRiCk. Burleson Mayor Ken Shetter and Place 4 Councilmember Matt Aiken will field questions. Elected officials will talk about their top priorities and listen to concerns of those in attendance. Third graders, your artistic talent may earn you a ride in Santa's sleigh Dec. 1
The City of Burleson's parks and recreation department is looking for some talented third graders, who are also Burleson residents, to participate in the annual holiday coloring contest. One lucky boy and one girl will be selected to ride with Santa in the Burleson Rotary Club's Parade of Lights on Saturday, Dec. 1. A flier with details about the coloring contest will be sent to all Burleson elementary schools. Entries must be turned in by Nov. 21 at the BRiCk's welcome desk at 550 N.W. Russell Farm welcomes sculptor Nov. 12-16 for weeklong seminar
Russell Farm welcomes J. Christopher White, an artist, sculptor and poet, for a weeklong seminar, Nov. 12-16. The seminar is called Maximize Movement. Limited space is still available for this seminar. White is a world renowned sculptor who has won countless awards, including first place honors with "Barn Swallows" for Interpretive Sculpture in the World Class 2009 World Championship Wildfowl Competition, which is the largest bird carving competition in the world. Brush up on City history via 'Century Book' and mayor bookmarks
If you want to brush up on your local history, the Burleson Public Library and the Burleson Heritage Foundation (BHF) have what you need. For the last 10 months, the library and the BHF (via the Burleson Visitors Center) have been selling special edition bookmarks featuring the City's mayors. The final mayor's bookmark, which profiles Mayor Byron Black and current Mayor Ken Shetter, is available now for a $1 donation. You can also buy the entire package - 10 mayor bookmarks - for $10 at the Burleson Visitors Center but there is a limited supply of the packaged bookmarks. The library and BHF will produce Centennial bookmarks in November and December. The library and visitors center also have "Burleson Century," a 240-plus page book commissioned by the City. "Burleson Century" covers the exploration of this area, founding of the city, the Roaring 20s, the Depression, World War II, the Baby Boom, and Modern Times. Stop by the library at 248 S.W. It's time to purge hazardous household waste, electronics and paper Nov. 3
Household hazardous waste items, check. Unused or unwanted electronics, check. Maximum of three boxes of paper for shredding, check. Now set your alarm and be one of the first at the City's Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Electronic Recycling, and Paper Shredding event on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the City's old service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and is only available to residents who live inside the Burleson city limits (proof of residency is required). Household hazardous waste items are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the City of Fort Worth's Crud Cruiser is full. E-Waste Collections is coordinating the electronic recycling. There will be a fee for TVs ($10); computer hard drive erasing ($10); and air conditioning unit Freon disposal ($15). Merit Document Destruction is providing the shredding services. When clocks fall back Nov. 4, local cemetery will get biannual spruce up
Daylight saving time means the City's cemetery, Burleson Memorial Park, will be spruced up! The clocks fall back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4. All items that are not permanently attached to the memorial or marker at Burleson Memorial Park will be removed after the time changes. The removal includes fresh or artificial flowers and other items that are hanging, sitting or lying on the gravesite. This cleanup occurs twice a year, always as daylight saving time begins (March) and ends (November). Contact Lucas Blessing Funeral Home, 518 S.W. Plant a tree for a veteran Nov. 3 and go home with one of 300 tree seedlings
If you come to honor a veteran at the dedication of the City's Military Veterans Grove at Centennial Park on Nov. 3, you may leave with a free tree seedling. The Texas Forest Service has donated 300 seedlings - bur oak, live oak and shumard oak - to be given out at the dedication. The ceremony is 9 a.m. on Nov. 3 at the park at 1100 Scarlet Sage Pkwy. The trees will honor the men and women who serve or who have served in the armed forces. Residents are asked to bring friends, neighbors and shovels to plant 100 native trees. Read More |
Most City facilities close two days in observance of Thanksgiving holiday
City facilities will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 22-23; Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 24-25; and Tuesday, Jan. 1, in observance of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. There will be no trash or curbside recycling collection on Thursday, Nov. 22; Tuesday, Dec. 25; and Tuesday, Jan. 1. Hidden Creek Golf Course will close at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The library will be closed Nov. 22-24 for Thanksgiving. The Burleson Animal Shelter will be open Saturday, Nov. 24. Community will honor military veterans at sixth annual Veteran Tribute Nov. 10
The service of military veterans will be honored Saturday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. when the City hosts the sixth annual Military Veteran Tribute at Veterans Memorial Park. This year's event will be dedicated to warriors wounded in action and Purple Heart recipients. Mayor Ken Shetter is the emcee.The Burleson Police Department's Honor Guard will provide the firing party, followed by "Taps." The ceremony includes the posting of colors by the Burleson Fire Department Honor Guard, bagpipes, the national anthem, and a medley of songs. Read More |
Shield your pets during Halloween time
Children and adults in costumes, toys and gadgets that make ghostly sounds, and a never-ending trail of people ringing the doorbell can be unsettling for your four-legged friends during the Halloween season. The website Doggone Safe is a non-profit organization dedicated to dog bite prevention through education and dog bite victim support. Doggone Safe offers tips for dog owners as well as for children and their parents, including secure your pet, distract them with TV or music, give them a toy and keep them indoors at Halloween. Learn about Chisholm Trail Parkway via library display and Nov. 8 meeting
If you want to learn more about Chisholm Trail Parkway, stop by the Burleson Public Library at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. and check out the display. The North Texas Tollway Authority and Granite Construction will also host a community meeting in Burleson on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the council chambers at city hall. The meeting is 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m., with the presentation starting at 6 p.m. Burleson City Hall is located at 141 W. Renfro St. The library display includes a map of the route that starts at I-30 in Fort Worth and goes southwest to FM 1187 in southern Tarrant County and then south to U.S. 67 in Johnson County.
