City celebrated its founding at 20th annual celebration in Old Town
People attired in historical garb had the honor of doing the parade walk from the corner of Ellison and Bransom streets to Ellison at Main Street to kick off the 20th annual Founders Day celebration in Old Town Burleson on Oct. 13! The Founders Day fun continued with a brief ceremony at the Burleson Visitors Center to welcome home the linotype. The day's events included a concert by the Blue Hat Band, mock gunfights, entertainment on two stages, and plenty of vendors offering up arts, crafts, food, and a variety of wares. Burleson, Texas, was founded on Oct. 10, 1881, and incorporated in 1912. The first Founders Day festival was in 1993. DVDs of interviews with local military veterans are available at the library
If you want to learn more about local veterans in the weeks leading up to the sixth annual Military Veteran Tribute on Nov. 10, the Burleson Public Library is at your service. Approximately 100 interviews with local military veterans that have been compiled as part of the Burleson Veterans History Project/Operation Remember have been added to the library's DVD collection. DVDs may be checked out for one week at a time. If you have a library card, you may check out up to 10 DVDs at one time. The videos are currently viewable on the City website by clicking on the Speciality Tab. The memories of military veterans are preserved thanks to dedicated volunteers, the City's Operation Remember program, and the Library of Congress Veteran History Project. Read More |
Burleson Old Town Boo Bash welcomes trick-or-treaters Oct. 27
Kids, put on your Halloween costume and bring your trick-or-treat bag to the City of Burleson's fifth annual Burleson Old Town Boo Bash on Saturday, Oct. 27. The fun, which includes free trick or treating for children from birth to 12 years old, takes place 6 p.m.-8 p.m., on Ellison Street, between Main Street and Johnson Avenue (124 W. Ellison St.). Children will enjoy free candy, games, bounce houses, a pumpkin patch full of free pumpkins to decorate, and a costume parade. The high school FFA will host a petting zoo. Read More |
Police make arrests in two unrelated aggravated robberies of businesses
Burleson Police arrested a Waco man Oct. 11 for the aggravated robbery of the Burleson Dairy Queen in December 2011. In an unrelated case, Burleson Police arrested a Comanche man on Sept. 27 for the aggravated robbery of a Burleson 7-11 store on Aug. 30 of this year. Arrested for the 2011 aggravated robbery is Daniel James Rockstad, 24. Arrested for the 2012 aggravated robbery is Mark Dewayne Rangel, 48. Read More |
Families had a 'far out' time at City campout
More than a dozen families pitched their tents in the field behind the baseball diamonds at Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex Friday, Oct. 12, and enjoyed a campfire, hot dogs and marshmallows. It was the City's Parks and Recreation Department's Far Out Family Campout. The adventure started at 5 p.m. on Friday and wrapped up at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Registration is ON for the Winter Basketball League at the BRiCk
Registration is underway for the Burleson Athletics Winter Basketball League at the BRiCk. This is for adults, 17 and older. Divisions are Men's Competitive and 6 foot and under. The team fee is $375. League play begins Nov. 26. Registration is limited to the first nine teams per division. This is an eight-game league with a single elimination tournament for the top four teams in each division. All games are played on Monday nights. All teams will be registered with the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation to quality for a state tournament. Registration ends Nov. 16. Citizens On Patrol earn CPR and first aid certification via fire department
Members of the Burleson Police Department's Citizens On Patrol earned their CPR and First Aid certification recently with the help of the Burleson Fire Department. Fire Lt. Casey Davis taught 10 new COPs members the basics of CPR and First Aid during the group's fourth and final week of training. COPs are trained to patrol neighborhoods, parks, and businesses; report suspicious people and vehicles; report traffic hazards; perform traffic control at special events such as the City's July 4th fireworks celebration; complete vacation checks and close patrols; co-host community events; host fund raising activities; educate the community about crime prevention; report City ordinance violations such as junk vehicles, curfew violations, and park violations; and patrol major retail parking lots during the holidays. COPs are also certified, via a four-hour class, for handicapped parking enforcement. COPs are trained to recognize violations and write citations to put on the windshields. Read More |
Connect With Council on Oct. 27
The City of Burleson is hosting the first of several town hall meetings, dubbed Connect With Council, with the first one slated for Saturday, Oct. 27, at 10 a.m. at the BRiCk. Council members will discuss any topic. Burleson Mayor Ken Shetter and Place 4 Councilmember Matt Aiken will field questions. The elected officials will talk about their top priorities and listen to the concerns of those in attendance. Light refreshments will be provided. The BRiCk is located at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd.

Fire fighter association fights back with sales of breast cancer t-shirts
Members of Burleson Professional Fire Fighters Association Local #4025 are fighting back against cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month by selling t-shirts to benefit the Careity Foundation. Burleson fire fighters are selling gray t-shirts with "Burleson Fire Department" entwined with the symbolic pink ribbon on the back of the shirt. The shirts are being sold at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. Alsbury Blvd. Stop by between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Each t-shirt is $20. T-shirt sizes range from adult small to 3X. Community will honor military veterans at sixth annual Veteran Tribute Nov. 10
The service and sacrifices of military veterans will be honored Saturday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. when the City hosts the sixth annual Military Veteran Tribute at Veterans Memorial Park at Renfro Square. This year's event will be dedicated to warriors wounded in action and Purple Heart recipients. Mayor Ken Shetter is the emcee.The Burleson Police Department's Honor Guard will provide the firing party, followed by "Taps." The ceremony includes the posting of colors by the Burleson Fire Department Honor Guard, bagpipes, the national anthem, and a medley of songs. The Burleson ROTC will present the ceremonial wreath. Most City facilities will close for City's Nov. 7 employee awards luncheon
City of Burleson facilities - with the exception of Hidden Creek Golf Course, the Burleson Public Library, the Burleson Police Department and the three fire stations - will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 7, between 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. so that City employees may attend the City's annual awards luncheon. Plant a tree for a veteran and go home with one of 300 tree seedlings Nov. 3
If you come to honor a veteran at the dedication of the City's Military Veterans Grove at Centennial Park on Nov. 3, you may leave with a free tree seedling. The Texas Forest Service has donated 300 seedlings - bur oak, live oak and shumard oak - to be given out at the dedication. The ceremony is 9 a.m. on Nov. 3 at the park at 1100 Scarlet Sage Pkwy. The trees will honor the men and women who serve or who have served in the armed forces. Residents are asked to bring friends, neighbors and shovels to plant 100 native trees. Learn about Chisholm Trail Parkway via library display and Nov. 8 meeting
If you want to learn more about Chisholm Trail Parkway, stop by the Burleson Public Library at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. and check out the display. The North Texas Tollway Authority and Granite Construction will also host a community meeting in Burleson on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the council chambers at city hall. The meeting is 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m., with the presentation starting at 6 p.m. Burleson City Hall is located at 141 W. Renfro St. The library display includes a map of the route that starts at I-30 in Fort Worth and goes southwest to FM 1187 in southern Tarrant County and then south to U.S. 67 in Johnson County.
