Hello, 2016! We can't wait to get started.

The count is in: 15 million people visited the Blue Ridge Parkway in 2015. Imagine 15 million people stopping at overlooks, hiking the trails, visiting historical sites, camping under the stars, and rediscovering their sense of adventure in the mountains. Only time will tell how many flock to the mountains in 2016, but we want the Parkway to be ready for them and you! This is the time of year when we meet with Parkway staff to plot a course for our new initiatives, including a second round of Centennial Challenge projects. Stay tuned for details, and thank you for all you do to protect the Parkway

Road to the Past

This year, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, but in 1972 crowds observed another centennial: the establishment of Yellowstone as the country's first national park. That's right. The first park preceded the National Park Service, which was established in 1916 to protect the 35 national parks and monuments then managed by the Department of the Interior and those yet to be established. The occasion (also the 36th birthday of the Blue Ridge Parkway) was marked with a day-long celebration at Doughton Park, where guests gathered for lunch at Bluffs Lodge.
