Exporting to Mexico Workshop
November 14, 2016 in Langley, BC

Nora Gonzales, our expert on Mexico's wood products industry, will be flying in from Mexico to share her insights on the many opportunities for BC's value-added wood manufacturers in Mexico. Our research continues to show Mexico as the fastest growing and greatest potential new market for our wood products export.

Nora recently brought a number of enthusiastic buyers to the Global Buyers Mission and together with our last successful trade event and mission to Mexico in August, we are very optimistic that the interest from this market will continue to grow. Participating members have already seen sales growth and our goal is to continue the momentum, while finding further new opportunities.

Join us to discover if your product is right for this market.

The trade Commissioner Service will also be on hand to talk about additional funding and incentives that may be available for you to lower your risk while exploring the possibilities.

Naturally:wood - Promoting B.C. Wood Manufacturers

Communication with customers in global markets is key to maintaining B.C.'s competitive forest sector. Across the province, communities and cities alike depend on this critical driver of B.C.'s economy, which last year generated $12.4 billion in exports, created a quarter of the province's manufacturing jobs and supported approximately 7,000 B.C. businesses.

To ensure that the evolving information needs of these markets are met, Forestry Innovation Investment, the Government of B.C.'s market development agency for forest products, recently refreshed naturallywood.com, an information resource to promote B.C.'s innovation in wood products and building systems, encourage the connection between B.C. suppliers to buyers, and to support the use of forest products from our sustainably-managed forests.

Our province is recognized as a leader in new wood product and building system innovation, creating opportunities for B.C. businesses while helping to lower society's carbon footprint. The naturally:wood Project Gallery showcases more than 60 projects where B.C. communities are incorporating wood innovation in buildings. Using this diverse range of examples can help stimulate more overseas sales of our technologically advanced wood products and building systems.

To stimulate new opportunities for B.C. businesses from both local and global customers, B.C.'s 500 forest product manufacturers are profiled through the B.C. Supplier Directory. If you would like your forest products company listed, please contact info@naturallywood.com.

Encourage your contacts to visit naturallywood.com, and help share our message that wood from B.C.'s world-leading forests is a home-grown solution, contributing to thriving communities and local jobs.

China Market Update
Be in the New BC Wood Chinese Brochure!
Jim Ivanoff

The BC Wood China office participates in several trade shows every year, in addition to organizing various seminars, responding to inquiries, and conducting countless client visits. In all of these trade promotion activities, we give out copies of our BC Wood Chinese-language brochure to both explain our value-added industry and to introduce specific member companies that have chosen to participate in this add-on program. We are currently putting together a new version of this brochure so need to know if your company would like to be part of this effective promotional activity.

For a small investment, your company will be featured in the members section of this brochure. All we need is your logo, contact information, a product picture, and a brief company/product profile. If you do not have a profile in Chinese, we can translate it from English for you.

Even if you cannot take advantage of our in-market trade show programs, this brochure will get your company in front of a wide cross-section of the Chinese industry. Space is limited and time is of the essence!

For more information about the new Chinese brochure program, please contact Jim Ivanoff at ivanoff@canadawood.jp.
WoodTALKS at the GBM Recap
Roy Manion

It just seems like yesterday when we were in the thick of things finalizing plans for the GBM and the WoodTALKS program. Now, here we are a month after the event, and the overwhelming consensus is that this was another excellent conference!

Aside from the name change, we also had a couple other changes this year. The WoodTALKS program began Thursday afternoon instead of the morning and consisted of fewer speakers. Having stated that, we were so fortunate that all the speakers were amazing! Beginning with Gord Macdonald talking about his and others ongoing efforts to conserve the expedition huts (made of wood) of early Antarctic explorers Scott & Shackleton, and finished the program on Saturday at lunch with Peter Moonen of the Canadian Wood council. In between were talks from Darryl Condon and John Patkau, two iconic architects who practice in Vancouver. I can safely say, all the talks were thought provoking, inspiring, widely relevant, and just amazing.

The exhibitor Mini-Seminars were some of the best we have had to date. One of the architects who had been to previous GBM's said afterward, that the exhibitors had really upped their game this year as all the sessions were well done. On Friday afternoon after the Mini-Seminars, John Patkau took the architects on a tour of the Audain Art Museum, which he designed. It was great to see this wonderful facility from an architect's perspective.
Global Buyers Mission
Randi Walker

The 13th Annual Global Buyers Mission held September 8th to 10th, 2016 welcomed over 800 delegates from all over the world to Whistler again this year.

Many thanks must go to our funding Partners who without their continued support, we would not be able to deliver this world class event: Natural Resources Canada Expanding Market Opportunities Program (EMO), Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd. (FII), Western Economic Development and Global Affairs Canada (GAC). Our main Corporate Sponsors this year included The Waldun Group,Terminal Forest Products, Livingston International, BMO Nesbitt Burns, Interfor, Glandell Enterprises, BFL Insurance, EncoreFX, Helijet International and Baywest Manufacturing.

CEO, Brian Hawrysh, and our newly elected Board Chairman, Robert Mitchell, welcomed our Opening Ceremony guest speaker, the Honourable Minister of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, Mr. Steve Thomson, who then officially opened our 13th Annual GBM.

This year, we registered more international buyers than ever before. They came from as far away as Australia, China, Japan, India, the United States, Korea, Nepal, Taiwan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Czech Republic, Belgium, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates and Germany. Again, many thanks must go to the Trade Commissioner Service from a number of international markets that greatly assisted with getting the word out and organizing the buyer recruiting again this year. With their help and dedication, many of the buyers were new to the GBM this year, opening opportunities for Canadian manufacturers to build new business opportunities. We anticipate an estimated $35+ million in new sales from the GBM this year.

We also hosted North American architects, designers, contractors, developers, engineers and specifiers this year, to participate in our WoodTALKS Program held from Thursday, September 8th, which included a mini-seminar series on Friday afternoon and tour of the beautiful new Audain Art Museum. This activity was again well received by both the architect community and participating exhibitors. The extensive program included successful lunch and learns and presentations by renowned local architects and speakers John Patkau, Daryl Conden, Gord Macdonald and Peter Moonen.

Products on display from across Canada included timber frame structures, engineered wood products, treated lumber, reclaimed wood, windows and doors, building systems, Western Red Cedar products, and a variety of other value-added wood building products.

For the past eleven years, BC Wood has organized extended mission programs for incoming delegates including site visits and factory tours around the province. This year, pre-qualified buyers once again toured production facilities and visited construction sites in the lower mainland, Vancouver Island, and Northern BC to meet participating manufacturers. Besides helping buyers immediately source high quality, innovative, and competitively priced wood products, the tours helped build future business relationships by familiarizing potential customers with Western Canada's wood species. We thank the many local companies that made the effort to open their mills and plants for these informative and productive tours.

Held at the Whistler Conference Centre, the GBM continues to be Canada's largest event dedicated to promoting value-added wood producers.

Mark your Calendars! The next GBM is scheduled for Whistler, September 7th to 9th, 2017.
USA Market Update
Dave Farley

A few comments, suggestions, and ideas for the industry...

With the summer finally coming to an end, it's time to start thinking about how to increase your company's sales into the growing US residential housing sector. BC Wood has a couple of excellent market development events this fall that are designed to get you in front of key buyers and decision makers.

The Custom Home Build Exchange: building upon the success of the recent Multi-Family Exchange, BC Wood and member companies will participate in the Custom Home Exchange from December 6th to 8th in Charleston, South Carolina. This event will bring in the top residential custom builders from across the US for direct one-to-one meetings with manufacturers and suppliers. Participants will have between 18 and 24 pre-qualified and pre-scheduled direct appointments over the two day event to review projects, discuss products, and explore supply chain needs. If you sell into the custom home and residential resort market, you should seriously consider this targeted event.

IBS 2017: The trade event conglomerate known as the International Builders Show (IBS) moves across the country from Las Vegas to Orlando, Florida from Jan 10th to 12th, 2017. The IBS combines the important events of "The Builders Show" and the "The Kitchen and Bath Show " under a single roof showcasing the latest in residential construction materials and supplies. IBS 2017 is expected to attract over 90,000 builders, architects, and distributors from the residential and light commercial construction sector. Put simply, IBS is the most important event for the housing sector in North America. BC Wood has once again secured prime booth space for IBS and will coordinate an impressive "wood products pavilion" at this years event.

While both Build Exchange and IBS take place in the US southeast, it is expected that buyers and decision markers from across North America and in particular, the Western United States, will be prominent at both events. The construction sector continues to be a driving force on the US economy and construction activity across the country remains high. Both events will get your company in front of the right people and our space is very limited, so if the US market is important to the growth of your firm, you need to seriously consider participating in one or both of these events.

For more information on the US market or the events reviewed above, please contact me at dfarley@bcwood.com
Europe Market Update
BC Wood at the BAU, Munich, Germany - Only one space left
Brian Hawrysh

BAU is the largest and best known building products show in the European market. The BAU fair, held every two years, attracts over 240,000 attendees. Some 50,000 of these attendees come from neighboring Western European countries and the ex-Soviet Bloc countries. This year, the event will be held from January 16th to 21st, 2017. A unique feature of the BAU show is that it consolidates companies featuring wood products and wood building systems in one of its sixteen halls. So while the show is very large, the majority of potential customers for wood based products and building systems are concentrated in one display hall.

High quality finished building materials such as decking, siding, roofing, flooring, and millwork are all in demand. Specialty lumber such as Douglas Fir, Hemlock, and a range of hardwoods are also highly sought after by manufacturers in the emerging markets of the post-Soviet bloc countries.

In January 2017, BC Wood will have a large display at the BAU fair for member companies and other Canadian forest products associations. Space is limited, so, for more information regarding the BAU show, BC Wood's participation, and costs, please contact Brian Hawrysh at 604-882-7100 or directly at bhawrysh@bcwood.com.
Taiwan Market Update
Taipei International Building Show

Canadian Trade Office in Taipei cordially invites you to join the Canada Pavilion at the "Taipei International Building Show (TaipeiBEX)", which takes place on December 15-18, 2016.

TaipeiBEX is Taiwan's largest building show, attracting local buyers and exhibitors from around the world. The show organizer has included an "Across Taiwan Strait Zone" for Chinese exhibitors and Taiwanese companies in China. Participation in the show is an excellent way to meet with importers and distributors from Taiwan - the fourth largest Asian export market for Canadian lumber products - and from the Greater China region as a whole.

In 2015, TaipeiBEX attracted over 79,546 buyers, including 78,599 local buyers; 588 overseas buyers, and 359 Mainland Chinese buyers. Click here for more information.
Korean Market Update
Korean Program: Housing Brand Fair 2017
Jim Ivanoff

BC Wood will be organizing a pavilion for members at the next Housing Brand Fair to be held from January 19th to 22nd at the very convenient COEX Exhibition Facility in Seoul's Gangnam district. The show's strong promotional backing and central location attracts most of the major players in Korea's wood and construction industries. A wide range of products are covered at the show including lumber, millwork, kitchens, furniture, and house packages. This show is ideal for a large cross-section of BC Wood members interested in targeting professionals in the Korean construction industry.

On behalf of BC Wood members interested in attending the show, our Korean Representative, JC Lee, has been negotiating with the show organizers to cover some of our members' travel costs for the show. For more information on this and the show, please contact Jim Ivanoff at ivanoff@canadawood.jp.
Upcoming Tradeshows

If you would like to exhibit in Western Canada's largest trade show and conference for the Construction, Renovation, Architecture, Interior Design and Property Management industries, join the BC Wood Pavilion at Buildex Vancouver, Feb 15th-16th, 2017

BC Wood members have a new opportunity to participate, at reduced cost, in our "turn-key" Kiosk Display program at the show. This is a great place to meet with all the Buildex delegates. An added feature is this space also hosts a daily Happy Hour with craft micro beer, which will draw even more people to your display!

Space is very limited for both regular and kiosk participation, as we had to make commitments in advance.  If you are interested in this event, please contact me as soon as possible for more details at khori@bcwood.com or 604-882-7100.
Japan Market Update
Nikkei Show 2017
Jim Ivanoff

BC Wood will once again be coordinating the Canadian Pavilion at the Nikkei Architectural and Construction Materials Show that will be held at Tokyo's Big Sight from March 7th through 10th, 2017. The Nikkei Show is already sold-out, but with BC Wood's longstanding participation in the show, we have been able to secure a pavilion in a prime location for our participating members.

The Nikkei Show is the largest show of its kind in Japan and sees over 250,000 industry professionals over the show's four days. The show attracts a great number of architects, but is also well attended by importers, distributors, and both residential and commercial builders. Therefore, the show is a good fit for producers of cabinetry, millwork, house packages including log and timberframe, as well as lumber and reman products. Space is limited, so please contact me as soon as possible for more information, at ivanoff@canadawood.jp.
