Journal of Commerce- April 14, 2015

The best designed wood projects in British Columbia were recently honoured at a gala in Vancouver. The 11th Annual B.C. Wood Design Awards took place at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

This year, there were a record 107 nominations in 12 different categories from all over the province, as well as an international nomination of a B.C. project by a New York-based designer.

"Each and every one of these projects is spectacular in its own right and demonstrates how wood can be used in innovative ways as an architectural and structural building material," said Lynn Embury-Williams, executive director of Wood WORKS! BC.

The winner of the Wood Champion Award was Marie-Odile Marceau, the principal at McFarland Marceau Architects Ltd.  The awards jury said that Marceau has a long and distinguished architectural career in both the public and private sectors. Her portfolio of sensitive and profound school projects in many First Nations communities has provided a lasting and significant positive learning impact on the students and communities alike.

Government Invests To Grow Wood Market

Nanaimo Business News

On April 9 the Government of British Columbia announced that it is investing $6.2 million to support the forest sector in expanding global markets for B.C. wood products. Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson made the announcement on behalf of International Trade Minister Teresa Wat, while attending the Council of Forest Industries annual meeting in Prince George.

"B.C. succeeds when the province has a strong and vibrant forestry sector, and promoting this industry is a key priority for our government. Combining the skills and resources of industry and both levels of government allows us to deliver more comprehensive market development efforts in priority markets in Asia, the U.S. and Europe and generates higher returns on our collective investments," Wat said.

The funding is being made available to nine industry trade associations that deliver market development programs on behalf of government and industry. Association activities will focus on expanding markets for B.C.'s solid wood products, with investment priorities reflecting evolving market opportunities in Asia, the U.S.A. and Europe. Activities will be delivered on a cost-shared basis, with additional funding provided by industry and the federal government, through Natural Resources Canada.

Specifier's Program Update
Roy Manion

As this is our first Wood Connections article of BC Wood's new fiscal year which began April 1st, we generally use the occasion to reflect back on the past year.

Our last fiscal year saw the Specifier Program conduct over 50 events; most of them being lunch & learn sessions. We also participated in a number of trade show activities that targeted specifiers including:

  • Vancouver Regional Construction Association Annual Conference
  • Wood First Forum in conjunction with the GBM in Whistler
  • Architectural Institute of BC's Annual Conference
  • Wood Work's Wood Solution Fair
  • Buildex in Vancouver and Calgary
  • IDSwest, Vancouver

Most recently, we also took a number of companies to the US Pacific Northwest and Alberta where they presented to architects in three major locations in each of these jurisdictions.

BC Wood also maintained membership in good standing with the following associations:

  • Architectural Institute of BC
  • Alberta Association of Architects
  • American Institute of Architects (nationally)
  • Interior Designers Continuing Educational Council
  • Vancouver Regional Construction Association
  • Independent Business Construction Association
  • Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers of Canada, BC Chapter

Lunch and learn sessions continued to be the backbone of the program. While last year we did meet with a few specifying firms for the first time, the number of these first time lunch & learns has become less and less due to our having presented to so many firms over the years and last year was no exception. Approximately 80% of all lunch & learn activities focused on one or two companies; all of which were return sessions for specifier firms who had already received the industry overview.

We also started offering, or were requested by the specifying firms, two 30 minute seminars. This was a win - win as it allowed for the specifiers to learn in fair depth about two topics and earn their full hour learning credits. It also provided the presenters with an opportunity to participate in more lunch and learn sessions. Another format that is quite popular is off-site group seminars. These are generally offered outside the Lower Mainland - primarily Vancouver Island and the Interior. Last year, we held these group seminars in Nanaimo and Victoria.

The specifier workshops we held in both the US Pacific Northwest and Alberta were very successful. Five companies from industry participated and presented in 3 cities in both markets. The total attendance for all six cities was around 170.

The associations that BC Wood is a member of are a vital component of the Specifiers program, primarily providing access to their members and allowing BC Wood to provide educational credits. BC Wood does this so that you don't have to.

In our next Wood Connections article, we will lay out our plans for the rest of this new fiscal year. In the meantime, should you wish additional information on any of the foregoing, please contact me at rmanion@bcwood.com or call me at the office. I would be pleased to discuss it with you.

Spotlight: J&S Reclaimed Wood Custom Furniture
Rumin Mann

J&S Reclaimed Wood Custom Furniture is a studio workshop in Vancouver, BC Canada. Their team rescues local antique wood from dilapidated heritage buildings, old barns, abandoned industrial buildings, unwanted pallets, and fallen logs. They take pride in turning unwanted material into beautiful timeless pieces of handmade furniture for homes and businesses.

Partners, Josh Hooge and Steve McFarlane have generations of wood workers in their ancestry with Josh's reaching back to the 1600's in Germany. In 2012, they started building reclaimed wood furniture as a hobby in their backyard. After decorating their own home, friends and family soon noticed their talent and began requesting pieces of furniture for their own houses. Word traveled and orders started piling up, necessitating a move of production to a small east Vancouver garage.

In 2012, J&S Reclaimed Wood Custom Furniture was founded. Growing commercial attention required moving to a much larger workshop and the hiring of staff to assist with full time production. Every single step of production is done by the J&S team onsite from designing to building to sanding and finishing. Every piece is engineered to suit their customer's lifestyle and design needs. They focus on highlighting the unique natural beauty of the raw materials, while designing each piece of furniture to be durable, simple, and functional. Not only is it environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly, each piece they make has its own unique story that we want to preserve for years to come.

In 2015, they received recognition from the Industry Training Authority for ongoing sponsorship of interns from a local women's trades training program. They provide hands-on training, practical skills, and exposure to a real world shop environment in preparation for apprenticeship in the trade. The majority of these interns have gone on to successfully pursue careers in the woodworking industry, some as apprentices on the J&S team.

US Market Update
Dave Farley

A few comments, suggestions, and ideas that may be of interest...

BC Wood has two important trade events taking place in the next few months that members should be aware of. Interest in both events is high as they each reach diverse, yet important target markets in the residential and light commercial construction sectors in the Western United States.

From May 11 to 13, BC Wood and member companies will be participating in The National American Indian Housing Council Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona. This exploratory event should provide a solid opportunity for BC manufacturers of prebuilt, log Home, and timber frame housing to create new market share and sales into this growing niche market. The need for quality built housing for First Nations and Native American communities is being felt across North America. This show attracts over 1,000 of the key influencers and decision makers for both the single and multi-family housing sector for tribal communities across the United States. BC Wood has made inroads on working with architect and building firms that specializes in providing housing solutions to Native American Communities. This combined with recent success from BC based prebuilt housing manufacturers selling to Native American tribes in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, suggests that this niche market provides potential and needs further exploration as provided by this trade event.

In late June, BC Wood will once again participate in the annual Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC) in San Diego. This event provides a very effective way for BC suppliers of interior and exterior construction material and supplies to connect with builders, architects, and distributors from targeted markets across the West Coast of the United States, including California, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest. With residential construction starts being strong across the California market, it is expected that member companies will develop strong leads and sales opportunities through their participation at PCBC.

We have very limited space available for both events so if you are interested, please contact me immediately at dfarley@bcwood.com or on my cell at 604-728-8786.

Japan Market Update

CLT Shake Table Test in Japan

Jim Ivanoff

As I have noted in previous articles, CLT has become one of the hottest topics in the Japanese construction industry over the past year or so. Much of this has to do with the Japanese government pushing the idea of large-scale wooden buildings as a way to increase the demand for domestic wood species. There are many ideas on how to accomplish this including the utilization of fire-rated 2x4 or post & beam assemblies. In North America, such use of fire-retardant coverings and sprinkler systems is well accepted. However, in Japan, many people believe that the structural material itself should be fire-proof as such measures could be compromised in earthquakes. Mass timber offers the promise of such natural fire resistance in large wooden structures thus leading to its ever-expanding following.

Aside from fire, earthquakes themselves are of course a major concern. Therefore, the CLT Association of Japan conducted tests on a five story CLT structure on the world's largest shake table in Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture in February. I was fortunate enough to be invited to witness the structure being shaken with the same force as the devastating Kobe earthquake in 1995 and was able to make a video. Conducting these tests to prove the seismic strength of CLT is just another step in convincing Japanese construction companies to promote CLT structures going forward.

Please view the shake table test here: (if you can not view the video below, click on the following link: https://youtu.be/X7AZVO6qr3c)
