Industry News | Industry Voices: Many changes ahead for wood sector
Journal of Commerce - Jan 15, 2015 The rising expectations for building performance on the design and construction sectors, along with code changes, construction impacts on neighbourhoods and tight timelines have initiated both incremental and revolutionary change in the construction sector. The construction sector has changed tremendously in the last 25 years, but there are still many construction companies in B.C. wrestling with how to deal with the changes they know are coming. One of these areas is off-site construction and, more than ever, those building in wood are experiencing significant change and tremendous opportunities.

Industry News | Learning the tricks of the trades
BC Local News - Jan 18, 2015 With a shortage of skilled workers in Canada becoming a growing problem, School District 22 and teachers are working together on a solution.
Getting students interested in working with their hands is just one of the steps they are taking. A Grade 6/7 class from Ellison Elementary School spent two days at Clarence Fulton Secondary working with the Grade 9 to 12 wood shop students, three shop teachers and former School District 22 superintendent Bob Peacock making wooden candy dispensers... Tolko donated lumber for the project and Rona donated gift cards to help purchase tools.

Our research shows that Mexico is the fastest growing and greatest potential new market for our wood products export. In 2013, the market size for building materials and services was USD $88 billion and an estimated USD $90 billion in 2014 - and still growing.
BC Wood has proposed two trade activities in Mexico this coming year that we will be providing cost-share for our members to participate in.
Last year,we identified a number of opportunities for BC value-added wood manufacturers in Mexico. We know there is a high demand and consumption in the construction sector in plywood and lumber for concrete forming purposes, but we have also determined that there are new opportunities in wood building materials for interior decoration, flooring, paneling, and molding. This is due in part to the construction industry embracing the green building movement since Mexico joined the World Green Building Council (WGBC). They are learning best practices from Europe, Canada, and the United States, in order to lower the costs and increase health benefits by building with wood. There is also a great opportunity for pre-fabricated home manufacturers in Mexico. Currently, the estimated value of wood pre-fabricated buildings industry in Mexico is USD $138 million and this sector is forecast to grow 6.3% annually until 2017. President Pen Nieto also announced new housing initiatives to address the shortfall of seven million housing units.
We know there are some new challenges to overcome in this market, so we will be bringing in all the experts to help you learn more about the growing opportunities; how to get your product to market; how to meet the new border and access regulations; and ensure you get paid.
In the seminar, we will cover:- The overall outlook of the Mexican economy
- Specific opportunities in Mexico for value-added wood manufacturers across a number of sectors
- How to get your product to market with transportation and logistics providers via rail/intermodal/ocean freight - and still be competitively priced
- How and why to guarantee your payments and financing options
- All about Mexico's new phytosanitary regulations and what you need to know
After this seminar, you will have a chance to meet one-on-one with Nora Gonzales, for a 2 - 3 hour session to discuss specific opportunities for your company in Mexico. You can meet either at the BC Wood office in Langley, or at your location in the lower mainland. Seminar Date: Tuesday, February 17th, 2015 Location: Langley, BC One-on-one sessions: February 18th - 20th For more information on whether Mexico is a good fit for your company or to register, please contact Rumin Mann at 604-882-7100 or rmann@bcwood.com

Specifier's Program Update |
Roy Manion
We currently have several programs on the go including arranging and implementing the US Pacific Northwest architect workshops, the Alberta architect workshops, and Lunch & Learn sessions in BC. Then in late February, we will be participating in Buildex Vancouver. All in all, it is a very busy time for all of us here at BC Wood and we expect it to continue through to our fiscal year end of March 31, 2015. Although local Lunch & Learn activities take a break from about the 15th of December through the first week or so of January, things are back to "normal" as we are back to averaging 1 - 2 sessions a week. Surprisingly, for yours truly, several sessions are with firms we are meeting for the first time. Our initial sessions with these firms allow us to present an overview of our industry focusing on the companies in the program. Having stated that, the majority of the Lunch & Learns are focus sessions where representatives from industry provide educational presentations on their respective products or programs to the specifier community. The groundwork for the US Pacific Northwest architect workshops is well under way. The workshops consist of five companies from BC, each giving 30 minute educational seminars on their products. These workshops will be held in Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland on Feb 17, 18, & 19 respectively. With great support from the Consulate General of Canada office in Seattle, initial invitations have been sent out. Next week, the Consulate office itself will send out follow up invitations. Last year, this approach was very effective and resulted in a full house of 50 architects in Seattle and we are expecting similar results again this year. The Alberta architect workshops will be held in late March and will once again be in the cities of Edmonton, Calgary, and Lethbridge. The group has been finalized and invitations will be sent out in mid-February. Buildex Vancouver will be held February 25 - 26th. BC Wood has once again taken a number of booths to create a "BC Wood Pavilion" that will consist of companies from our industry to provide those attending Buildex a kind of one-stop shop for those looking for anything wood related. As of this writing, there may still be one or two booths available. If you are interested in participating - and there are many compelling reasons to do so - please contact Ken Hori at the BC Wood office at 604-882-7100 or khori@bcwood.com. As always, should you wish additional information on any of the foregoing, please contact me at rmanion@bcwood.com or call me at the office. I would be pleased to discuss it with you.

Japan Market Update |
A Happier New Year
Jim Ivanoff
The increase in Japan's consumption tax in 2014 was not kind to the housing industry. Overall, the market was probably down 10%. On top of that, the 2x4 housing industry suffered through inventory imbalances because of the labour action at the Port of Vancouver as well as a dramatically weakening Yen. After a so-so 2013, 2014 was thus seen as a tough year by most, with the only positive outlook coming from firming housing demand starting in the fall.
The traditional New Year's industry gatherings in Japan are a chance for everyone to discuss predictions and gauge which way the market is seen as going. From the ones I have attended so far, it looks like the mood is improving, but with a realization that the 850,000 housing starts level is the new norm. Looked at it another way, 2013 was simply an oddity juiced by pre-consumption tax increase demand. Oddly, even with demand for starts falling from 2013, trades people are still in short supply and there are many bottlenecks slowing down starts.
Conquering inflation has been Prime Minister Abe's greatest goal and many economists now see 2015 as the year Japan will finally beat deflation. The construction industry is already facing higher labour and imported material costs, so one of the main themes for 2015 will be dealing with the re-introduction of inflation. As one speaker noted, companies must now determine how to pass higher prices on, or become more efficient to absorb the increases. The long deflationary market has pushed companies to become leaner so it is unclear if there really is much potential for increasing efficiency to cover inflationary pressures. However, at least all of the public discussions about inflation are mentally preparing the country to pay more, so with stable demand supporting starts, this might finally be the chance for the housing industry to increase prices and enjoy healthier profit margins.

Japan Market Update |
Nikkei Show 2015
Jim Ivanoff
After a very successful Japan Home and Building Show, we are now starting to prepare for the Nikkei Architectural and Construction Materials Show that will be held at Tokyo's Big Sight from March 3rd through 6th, 2015. Once again, the Nikkei Show is already sold-out, but with BC Wood's longstanding participation in the show, we have been able to secure a pavilion in a prime location on behalf of our members.
The Nikkei Show is the largest show of its kind in Japan and sees over 250,000 industry professionals over the show's four days. The show attracts a great number of architects, but is also well attended by importers, distributors, and both residential and commercial builders. Therefore, the show is a good fit for producers of cabinetry, millwork, house packages, log and timber-frame, as well as lumber and reman products.

China Market Update |
Interzum Guangzhou 2015
Jim Ivanoff
After our well-received pavilion earlier this year, BC Wood is planning a return to Interzum Guangzhou from March 28th to April 1st in 2015 to give members another opportunity to build and expand their business in the still growing Chinese market. This annual event covers every facet of wood furniture and building products manufacturing including both machinery and raw materials. It is said to be the largest woodworking show in Asia. Over 1,100 manufacturers and suppliers are expected to occupy the 130,000-square meter venue with 60,000 visitors expected.
Interzum has been attracting pavilions from Germany, the US, Italy, Turkey, Spain, Sweden, etc over the past ten years, covering a wide variety of both softwood and hardwood species. Due to the show's importance to the Chinese woodworking industry, buyers/ importers of all types of wood products visit. Therefore, this show will be of interest to members supplying a wide variety of softwood & hardwood lumber for use in remanufacturing, concrete forming and wood construction. This show sells out quickly, so BC Wood will be booking space for members within the next month. For more information, please e-mail me at ivanoff@canadawood.jp.
