An FPInnovations Webinar

December 16, 2014, 10:00am PST

Today's newer materials and specifications are calling for products that did not exist five years ago. Newer veneer products such as reconstituted veneer, different core materials that are fire rated or low formaldehyde, different adhesives, and different finishing products all add up to newer issues that are causing grief not only to the end user but the manufacturer and supplier as well. Add the fact that architects and designers are specifying these new products on their projects and you realize that your processes may need to be adjusted to accommodate these new products.

In this webinar, FPInnovations will help you to identify some of the caution points to be aware of and what steps you need to take to help minimize potential issues on your specific woodwork projects. In this webinar you will find out about:
  • Caution points when manufacturing with veneers and substrates.
  • Relative humidity, moisture content and environment
  • Wood movement, effects of UV and sunlight
  • Acclimation and proper storage of raw materials
  • Veneer issues and potential causes
  • Standardization through finishing SOP's and step boards
  • Case studies and how tests are conducted to determine root cause
  • Testing capabilities
Click on the link below before December 15, 2014 to register for this free webinar and find out how you can benefit from this information.

Specifier's Program Update
Roy Manion

The last few weeks have been particularly hectic as we presented six Lunch & Learn sessions to architects and a large contractor; participated in a factory tour at Structurlam's Okanagan Falls and Penticton facilities; and showed in a mini trade event with the AWMAC group. We also continued with preparation for our Pacific Northwest and Alberta Specifier seminars scheduled for February and March respectively.

Historically, November and the first two weeks of December are very active as it relates to booking Lunch & Learn sessions and this year has been no exception.  We are averaging 2 - 3 sessions a week with a variety of topics being covered. We expect this rate to continue through to the middle of December. Interestingly, an increasing number of sessions are featuring 2 participating companies, with each giving 30 minute presentations, meaning that specifiers are being exposed to a multiple products with each of these sessions, as opposed to just one. While most presentations do require the full hour, an increasing number of companies are more than satisfied with 30 minutes and many specifier firms appreciate having the option.

On Friday, Nov 14th, BC Wood along with a number of architects and engineers from the Lower Mainland participated in a tour of Structurlam's Cross Laminated Timber and glulam manufacturing facilities in Okanagan Falls and Penticton. The participants included engineers and architects from the Lower Mainland. Bill Downing, Structurlam's President, pictured in the far left of the photo, and his people did a great job in showcasing both CLT's and Glulams from beginning of the manufacturing process to the final product. A great and informative day was had by all.

BC Wood then participated in AWMAC BC's first ever Associate Member Trade Fair. This presented us with the opportunity of meeting with owners and management of many BC architectural millwork companies and presenting how BC Wood can benefit their companies. The two associations, BC Wood and AWMAC, have developed an excellent relationship over the past two years and this provided a great opportunity to meet many of AWMAC's members.

We are also continuing to put together a team of companies from our industry interested in participating in specifier seminars in the US Pacific Northwest and Alberta. As mentioned in our last Wood Connections, the US sessions will be held in Seattle, Olympia, and Portland on 3 consecutive days this coming February - most likely Feb 17 - 19. In Alberta, they will be held in Edmonton, Calgary, and Lethbridge from March 17 -19, again on consecutive days.

As always, should you wish additional information on any of the foregoing, please contact me at rmanion@bcwood.com or call me at the office. I would be pleased to discuss it with you.

US Market Update
Dave Farley

A few comments, suggestions, and ideas that may be of interest to the industry...

Last month, BC Wood and member companies participated in the NAWLA (North American Wholesale Lumber Association) Traders Market in Chicago. This annual event brings wood product buyers and sellers together from across North America and Europe. NAWLA, focuses on the wholesale lumber supply chain, with exhibitors showcasing a variety of primary and secondary wood products and buyers representing the wholesale lumber distribution chain.

The mood at Traders Market was upbeat and positive, with buyers keen on securing product for an expected strong spring construction season. Many spoke of how busy they are and that their market is showing activity not seen since the downturn of 2008.

Next year's Traders Market moves from the Midwest to to the heart of Texas and the city of Dallas. It is also expected that the 2015 version of the Traders Market will be strong as the state of Texas continues to lead the country in residential and light commercial construction activity.

Finally, kudos to the NAWLA young executive committee for inviting MLB pitcher, BC Boy and all around good guy, Ryan Dempster, to the NAWLA booth for a meet and greet and autograph signing. It's a rare event that a professional athlete exceeds the expectations of his fans, but Dempster certainly did that. He was easy going and laid back, joking with the NAWLA crowd, signing baseballs, and taking pictures with the attendees. He is a great ambassador of Major League Baseball and for Canadians in general.

Japan Market Update

Japan Home and Building Show 2014

Jim Ivanoff

From November 12th to 14th, BC Wood organized and managed the Canadian Pavilion at the Japan Home & Building Show on behalf of the Canadian wood products industry. This is of course a special year for us as it is BC Wood's 25th Anniversary and we were honoured to have Minister Teresa Wat come and help us celebrate. On the second night of the show, a reception was held at the Tokyo Bankers Club in her honour and BC Wood was invited to join this event with our VIP guests in recognition of our anniversary. Minister Wat also came to our pavilion the following day where she again met with members and key clients. This gave her a great opportunity to learn more about what BC Wood does for Canadian industry in overseas markets.

The Japanese housing market has been significantly impacted by the increase in the consumption tax this past April 1st. Over the summer months, starts and imports fell off steeply, but talking to industry people at the show, it seems that this is turning around now. Many companies said they feel that the market conditions will continue rebounding through the New Year. The optimism in the market going forward was also demonstrated by the fact that the JHS was sold-out and in general you could see that companies were spending more on their displays. Attendance was also up 19% over last year.

For our pavilion, we kept the same basic simple and modern design but with a new and enhanced "Canadian forest experience" display designed by the famous Japanese designer, Hiroyuki Takamura of Unplugged Design Laboratory. The new WRC wall and ceiling treatment attracted a lot of attention to our space and as a result we had the highest volume of traffic in our booth in many, many years. In fact, we quickly ran out of a number of our promotional materials and had to order more from the warehouse. We were once again joined by our Canada Wood partners at the APA and CFPA.

We are now looking forward to the Nikkei Architectural and Construction Materials Show to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from March 3rd to 6th, 2015. Please contact me at ivanoff@canadawood.jp for more information on that event.

Korean Market Update

Housing Brand Fair 2015

Jim Ivanoff

BC Wood will be organizing a pavilion for members at the next Housing Brand Fair to be held from January 22nd to 25th at very convenient COEX Exhibition Facility in Seoul's Gangnam district. The show's strong promotional backing and central location attracts most of the major players in Korea's wood and construction industries. A wide range of products are covered at the show including lumber, millwork, kitchens, furniture, and house packages. Therefore, this show is ideal for a large cross-section of BC Wood members interested in targeting professionals in the Korean construction industry.

On behalf of BC Wood members interested in attending the show, BC Wood's Korean Representative, JC Lee, has been negotiating with the show organizers to cover some of our members' travel costs for the show. JC has also arranged for a special rate at the InterContinental Hotel attached to the convention centre. For more information on this and the show, please contact Jim Ivanoff at ivanoff@canadawood.jp

Japan Market Update

Nikkei Show 2015

Jim Ivanoff

After a very successful Japan Home and Building Show we are now starting to prepare for the Nikkei Architectural and Construction Materials Show that will be held at Tokyo's Big Sight from March 3rd through 6th, 2015. Once again the Nikkei Show is already sold-out, but with BC Wood's longstanding participation in the show, we have been able to secure a pavilion in a prime location on behalf of our members.

The Nikkei Show is the largest show of its kind in Japan and sees over 250,000 industry professionals over the show's four days. The show attracts a great number of architects, but is also well attended by importers, distributors, and both residential and commercial builders. Therefore, the show is a good fit for producers of cabinetry, millwork, and house packages including log and timberframe, as well as lumber and reman products.

China Market Update

Interzum Guangzhou 2015

Jim Ivanoff

After our well-received pavilion earlier this year, BC Wood is planning a return to Interzum Guangzhou from March 28th to April 1st in 2015 to give members another opportunity to build and expand their businesses in the still growing Chinese market. This annual event covers every facet of wood furniture and building products manufacturing including both machinery and raw materials. It is said to be the largest woodworking show in Asia. Over 1,100 manufacturers and suppliers are expected to occupy the 130,000-square meter venue with 60,000 visitors expected.

Interzum has been attracting pavilions from Germany, the US, Italy, Turkey, Spain, Sweden, etc over the past ten years, covering a wide variety of both softwood and hardwood species. Due to the show's importance to the Chinese woodworking industry, buyers/ importers of all types of wood products visit. Therefore, this show will be of interest to members supplying a wide variety of softwood & hardwood lumber including for uses in remanufacturing, concrete forming and wood construction. This show sells out quickly, so BC Wood will be booking space for members within the next month. For more information, please e-mail me at ivanoff@canadawood.jp.
