New agreement promotes B.C. wood in China
British Columbia Newsroom - October 10, 2014

NANJING, CHINA - Jiangsu Province is the latest Chinese province to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Province of B.C. to increase the use of wood-frame construction, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson announced today.

The agreement enhances co-operation and communication between the two governments, and is an opportunity to apply wood-frame construction in Jiangsu, since wood-frame buildings are energy-efficient and reduce carbon emissions. Benefits of the partnership include wood-frame construction research, exploration of suitable locations for wood-frame building applications for Jiangsu Province, joint promotion of wood-frame construction, and enhanced government and industry exchanges.

New Products - Smart Coatings for Wood Products

An FPInnovations Webinar

November 18, 2014, 10:00am PST

Traditionally, the function of coatings was to protect wood surfaces or to change their appearance. Recently, coatings with novel functions have gained considerable interest and are now hitting the market. Smart or intelligent coatings are able to sense a change in conditions in the environment (temperature, pH, stress, etc.) and respond to that in a predictable and noticeable manner.

Self-healing coatings are coatings that can repair themselves or could be repaired with the application of heat. Self-cleaning coatings are coatings that can degrade several contaminants, such as viruses, fungi, and volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde.

This November, FPInnovations will host a webinar that will review the most promising emerging smart coatings for use on wood products. In addition, current research that is focused on self-healing, self-cleaning, and easy-to-clean coatings for wood products will be shared.

Tradeshow Tips/Advice
3 Major Trade Show Exhibit Design Pitfalls to Avoids
Skyline Tradeshow Tips - October 16, 2014

Are you wondering why your trade show exhibit is not bringing in the attendees and leads you had hoped for? You have your booth staff, you have your demo, and you have an in-booth promotion. So what is the deal? Maybe you should look a little closer at the exhibit you brought. Your exhibit design and structure has so much more to do with your image and success than you realize.

It is crucial that you use thoughtful design and materials, and don't use a hand-me-down display from old, recycled and outdated exhibits. Your company has what show attendees are looking for, right? So why not show them that you are a professional company that can be trusted? Do this by conveying a clear message and offering, and by representing yourself appropriately.

Here are 3 major exhibit pitfalls you need to avoid in order to convey the right message:

1. Poorly Printed Graphics

  • They create a poor image of your company and scream "I don't care."
  • People will pass you by, including your current customers and prospects because they don't want to be seen visiting your exhibit and because you don't look professional.

Specifier's Program Update
Roy Manion

As stated in my last Wood Connections article, October through to the end of March is our busiest time for individual architect sessions including lunch & learn sessions, group seminars, and factory tours with a good dose of trade shows being added to the mix.

Since Thanksgiving through to the end of the month, we will do six lunch and learn sessions of which half are done by companies that are new to the program. Along with lunch and learn sessions for architects, we have lined up sessions with major contractor firms and expect to finalize additional contractor sessions in November. As this is our busiest season when the vast majority of sessions are arranged, new participants are entering the program and with over 5 months to go in our current fiscal year, there is a lot that we can accomplish.

Trade shows are the other major activity the program will be dealing with. By our next Wood Connections, we will have participated - along with several BC companies - in the Wood Solutions Fair (Oct 30th) and Calgary Buildex (Nov 5 - 6th). Calgary Buildex will also be a spring board to launch preparations for our Alberta specifier group sessions. Last March, BC Wood was joined by 4 companies from industry and held specifier group sessions in Edmonton, Calgary, and Lethbridge. We expect to do the same in early 2015.

As always, should you wish for your firm to become more involved with the specifier community or simply want some information on what the Specifier Program entails, please feel free to contact me at  rmanion@bcwood.com or call me at 604-882-7100. I would be pleased to discuss it with you.

Europe Market Update

BC Wood at this year's BAU Show - Munich, Germany, January 19-24, 2015

Brian Hawrysh

BAU is the largest and best known building products show in the European market. The BAU fair, held every two years, attracts over 240,000 attendees. Some 50,000 of these attendees come from neighboring Western European countries and the ex-Soviet Bloc countries. A unique feature of the BAU show is that it consolidates companies featuring wood products and wood building systems in one of its sixteen halls. So while the show is very large, the majority of potential customers for wood based products and building systems are concentrated in one display hall.

Throughout Western Europe and particularly in resort regions that have a high percentage of second luxury homes (such as the Alps in France, Germany, and Italy and the Pyrenees region of Spain and France), there exists good potential for manufacturers of log and timber frame homes. The BC handcrafted style, featuring large diameter logs and heavy timbers, have a unique appeal to these wealthy homeowners.

High quality, specialty lumber and building materials such as WRC decking, siding, and roofing and Douglas-Fir, Hemlock, and Western Hardwood lumber remain in demand in Western Europe and increasingly in the emerging markets of the Eastern post-Soviet bloc countries.

BC Wood plans to organize a relatively large display at the BAU fair for member companies and other Canadian forest products associations. Space is limited, so, for more information regarding the BAU show, BC Wood's participation and costs, please contact Brian Hawrysh at 604-882-7100 or directly at bhawrysh@bcwood.com.

Buildex Vancouver

Buildex - Vancouver, February 19 & 20, 2015

BUILDEX Vancouver is one of Canada's largest tradeshows and conferences, welcoming over 13,500 design, construction, and real estate management professionals each year. Over 600 exhibits and more than 50 educational seminars impacting three distinct professional markets, all under one roof:

  • Interior designers and architects
  • Property and real estate management
  • Construction and renovation

BC Wood is coordinating member participation at the upcoming Buildex Vancouver on February 19th and 20th, 2014. This event is for decision makers in the construction industry and is targeted towards professionals who need to know what wood products are available and how they can be used.

The Buildex Show will give you an opportunity to talk to key architects, engineers, and the municipal officials on commercial, industrial, and residential projects.

Who Should Participate?

Companies manufacturing finished building materials, pre-fabricated structures, and engineered wood products for commercial and large multi-family residential construction projects would benefit by participating in the BC Wood Pavilion at the 2014 Vancouver BUILDEX Show.

Very limited space is still available so please contact us as soon as possible if you are interested in exhibiting at this cost-shared event. Call Randi or Roy at 604-882-7100 or email rwalker@bcwood.com or rmanion@bcwood.com.

China Market Update

Interzum Guangzhou 2015

Jim Ivanoff

After our well-received pavilion earlier this year, BC Wood is planning a return to Interzum Guangzhou from March 28th to April 1st in 2015 to give members another opportunity to build and expand their businesses in the still growing Chinese market. This annual event covers every facet of wood furniture and building products manufacturing including both machinery and raw materials. It is said to be the largest woodworking show in Asia. Over 1,100 manufacturers and suppliers are expected to occupy the 130,000-square meter venue with 60,000 visitors expected.

Interzum has been attracting pavilions from Germany, the US, Italy, Turkey, Spain, Sweden, etc over the past ten years, covering a wide variety of both softwood and hardwood species. Due to the show's importance to the Chinese woodworking industry, buyers/ importers of all types of wood products visit. Therefore, this show will be of interest to members supplying a wide variety of softwood & hardwood lumber including for uses in remanufacturing, concrete forming and wood construction. This show sells out quickly, so BC Wood will be booking space for members within the next month. For more information, please e-mail me at ivanoff@canadawood.jp.

Japan Market Update

Osaka Living & Design Show 2014

Jim Ivanoff

Most of BC Wood's events in Japan are focused in Tokyo, but we also place an emphasis on the Kansai area around Osaka which is the second largest market in the country. For this reason, we have been participating in the Osaka Living and Design Show for the past few years. It is a newer and smaller show with only about 120 exhibitors, but it is very focused with high-standards. Under the strong leadership of its producer, Mr Kita, who is very famous in Japan's design community, it has grown into one of the most important interior design shows in Japan.

This year's show saw more positive developments. The booths were better than ever with companies putting a lot of effort into their displays. The number and quality of the visitors also keeps improving. Originally, Living and Design was a local show, but now visitors even come from Tokyo. As a result, there was a lot of pressure on the organizers to move the show to a larger venue, but they resisted to ensure that their vision for Living and Design could be maintained.

BC Wood once again worked with the famous Japanese designer, Hiroyuki Takamura of Unplugged Designs, to fashion a display of members' products that matched the atmosphere of the show. Visitors loved the fact that they could not only learn about WRC, but also experience a coastal forest by smelling and walking on cedar chips. Mr Takamura also inspired a table made of reclaimed wood. The wood is typically used as panelling or flooring in retail spaces; however, creating a three dimensional display of it really grabbed the attention of visiting architects and designers.

Overall, our efforts paid off and we had our best show yet in Osaka. In fact, we gave out over 1000 sets of literature and collected about 500 new contacts. We look forward to giving BC Wood members the opportunity to take part in Living and Design again next year.
