B.C. investing $2.14 million to put wood first
Ministry of International Trade News Release - June 10, 2014

The B.C. government is investing $2.14 million to advance the use of wood in British Columbia with a focus on expanding the use of wood in non-residential construction, strengthening manufacturing capabilities, and positioning B.C. as a global leader in wood design technologies.

Funding is being provided to industry trade associations and research institutions with proven records in wood products marketing, training, wood products development and research. The funds are being distributed through the Wood First program, an initiative to grow the culture of wood throughout B.C. and to develop world-leading technologies and building systems that can be used to promote B.C. wood sales both at home and in foreign markets.

The Wood First program is delivered by Forestry Innovation Investment, the Province's market development agency for wood products. The funding announcement was made June 10th by Minister of International Trade Teresa Wat at Viceroy Homes in Richmond, a leader in the design, engineering and manufacturing of custom wood buildings.

Ronald McDonald House Grand Opening

Brian Hawrysh

On June 11th, we were invited to attend a special reception for suppliers, whose support helped build the new Ronald McDonald House BC. Many BC Wood members generously donated their time, products and materials to the new RMH. We had an exclusive sneak peek at BC's new home-away-from-home for BC and Yukon's sick kids and families - capable of handling up to 73 families at one time. The previous house could support only 13 families, so this new facility, designed by architect Michael Green, is one of the top 5 in the world.

On June 16th, Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon reached a milestone seven years in the making, with the grand opening of the brand new facility on the grounds of BC Children's Hospital.

"This is a momentous day for seriously ill children and their families in British Columbia," said Richard Pass, CEO, Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon. "We are extremely grateful to each and every person who made this new House possible - from our donors, to the public to the Province of BC and McDonald's Canada. With the new Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon, over 2,500 families each year will have a home-away-from-home while their child is receiving medical care in Vancouver.",

Tradeshow Tips/Advice
5 Ways Trade Shows Help Small Businesses Grow
Skyline Tradeshow Tips - June 9, 2014

Small businesses can now garner the same benefits as their larger competitors at industry events and trade shows. Once seen as a corporate Who's Who of business leaders, industry events are now recognized as an excellent opportunity for smaller local businesses and cottage industries. Trade show booth rentals have become more affordable, making these lucrative events a solid investment in future profitability for even the smallest business. The ROI is undeniable and the up-front investment is surprisingly affordable. Here are just 5 reasons that trade shows can help small businesses grow:

1. Renting Trade Show Booths

If your small business may not be able to afford a staff of marketing specialists or the production of a trade show booth, renting a booth could be a viable option. By renting trade show booths, your small business gets all the advantages of working with a team of experts and housing a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, without the expense. Trade show booths are designed by you, in conjunction with a team of advertising professionals, at a price you can afford. Your brand and your message will make a powerful statement with a rented display, while staying within your specified budget.

'Reclaimed Is The New Black'

nakedwood, a Vancouver based creative wood design company is serious about reclaimed and sustainably harvested wood products. After being in the industry for over seven years manufacturing custom cabinetry, Owner/Designer Jaxon Howell was tired of the ordinary. He wanted to combine rustic and modern, making custom pieces for the new generation. While one-of-a-kind, handcrafted furniture and feature walls are nakedwood's bread and butter, everything from cabinets to signs and picture frames can be crafted beautifully as well. All of the wood salvaged has its own unique character and history.

"Working with reclaimed wood is my passion. I want to reutilize these materials to recreate something fresh and unique. The character in aged wood, the deep grooves in the grain from being weathered, nail holes, wear marks, and scars from its use over the years give each piece a one-of-a kind look and feel, marrying the former story to its new one," said Howell. Their unique, simple design allows their pieces to live in any style of home.

nakedwood was recently commissioned to provide some exciting pieces for the new HootSuite Media office that opened up last year. Everything from log stools and benches, to feature walls, bistro tables, board room tables, planter boxes, and more. They just finished up work on HootSuite's latest office as well filling it with many more amazing pieces. They are continuing to supply HootSuite and other West Coast companies like Noodle Box and Lush with unique, custom pieces throughout the year. Specifier's Program Update
Roy Manion

Since our last Wood Connections, we have focused (and continue to do so) on three key issues:

  • The Specifiers Program at the GBM - otherwise known as the Wood First Forum
  • The Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) and its impact on the Specifiers Program
  • Ongoing visits with existing and potential participants of the Specifiers Program

The Wood First Forum and Other Programs at the GBM for Specifiers

Our search for speakers both international and domestic is just about completed and will be announce in the next Wood Connections. As with past years, all of the speakers are top notch and will be discussing very current developments in their respective fields. We expect this program to be a great draw for the specifiers.

Other key areas we are working on for the specifiers at the GBM are our Friday afternoon mini-seminar sessions with the exhibitors, Saturday afternoon's program, and of course, getting out the invitations to the Specifiers.

This year, invitations are being sent to specifiers in BC, Alberta, and the US Pacific Northwest - the last two are a result of our Specifier Outreach Workshops we held in those two jurisdictions. As with the speakers, we expect much of the foregoing to be completed and in place in the next couple of weeks.

The Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation

You may have read other articles on the new Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). In the case of the Specifiers Program, every architect, designer, contractor, and engineer in Canada we invite to various programs must explicitly agree that they want to continue to receive our emailed invitations. We will be contacting the specifiers to receive their express consent so we can continue inviting them to our programs. As this has caught most of us off guard, we hadn't planned for the extra time to implement it. However, like the rest of the associations in Canada, we just have to work our way through it.

Ongoing Visits to Existing and Potential Specifier Program Participants

This is a far more pleasant task than the just mentioned one and is actually one of my favorite parts of the job. Although today's technology almost makes face-to-face visits a thing of the past, to me, there is nothing more dynamic than getting out and visiting participants in their place of business. I am well over half way through these visits and have enjoyed every minute of them, as each visit provides great insight into the people and businesses we regularly present to specifiers.

Should you require additional information on any of the above, please contact me at rmainion@bcwood.com.

IDSWest - Vancouver - Sept 25-28
Randi Walker

BC Wood will once again be ramping up its' presence at the Interior Design Show West (IDS West) this coming fall, September 25-28, 2014 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. In an effort to bring more attention to the growing strength of wood design and manufacturing in BC, BC Wood has partnered with the show organizers of IDS West to create a high profile "Design BC" pavilion. The pavilion will showcase BC Wood members and their products - everything from custom furniture and architectural millwork, to design-inspired finished products such as kitchen cabinets, doors, flooring, and paneling. We will also create a special "feature" area to draw more traffic to the centrally located space.

The show attracts more than 35,000 attendees over 3 days. This includes 5,000 guests to the Party On Opening Night, 6,000 designers, architects, buyers, builders/developers, and other industry professionals during trade day, and an additional 25,000 consumers interested in design.

A total of 1400 square feet of exhibition space has been set aside for the "Design BC" pavilion and feature area, with BC Wood covering a portion of the hard costs for this sector wide display. If you plan to participate in the IDS West show this year, please contact BC Wood to see how we can save you money and ensure you higher visibility through the "Design BC" pavilion. Mexico Trade Mission and Expo CIHAC - Oct 14th - 21st, 2014
Brian Hawrysh

This year, BC Wood is planning a return to the Mexican market to look at opportunities for BC's wood products. Mexico is a market which was showing good initial promise prior to the economic and construction downturn in the United States in 2008. Even during the downturn, Mexico's dependence on imported wood products, now at US $1.4 billion per year, has been increasing at 5.5% annually. Softwoods comprise the vast majority of wood products imported into Mexico with some hardwoods used primarily in the furniture industry (hard maple and alder are popular imports).

Almost half of the total wood imports come from the US; much of this share is vulnerable to Canadian competition. Deforestation remains a severe problem and Mexico's substandard infrastructure compels the country to rely on foreign sources of wood products. As the US and Canadian economies continue to expand, it is expected that Mexico will be forced to depend on larger and larger volumes of wood imports. In 2012, Canada exported almost $17 million of manufactured wood products to Mexico. This was an increase of 30.1% from the previous year. BC's share of this total was $6 million, a year over year increase of 49%.

BC Wood will coordinate the exhibition of member companies at the Expo CIHAC in Mexico City. Expo CIHAC is the premier event in Mexico and Latin America for the construction industry. This trade event focuses on the importers and distributors of construction and building products, but also goods that are used in industrial application like the packaging and furniture manufacturing sectors. The Expo CIHAC will be a suitable fit for many suppliers for hardwood and softwood lumber and other wood based building materials.

BC Wood will also coordinate a trade mission component post CIHAC that will take participants to directly visit and meet with Mexican wood importers, distributors, and manufacturers. Member companies that participate in this event will have an opportunity to gain first-hand market intelligence, meet with qualified buyers, and increase the sales potential of their products.
For more information on CIHAC trade show and the proposed mission contact Ken Hori at 604-882-7100 or by email at khori@bcwood.com.

BC Wood Members participating in the Denver Log Home Show - Denver Colorado, Sept 26-28th, 2014

Brian Hawrysh

In late September, BC Wood and its' members will participate in the Denver Log and Timber Frame Home show, Sept. 26th -28th. The Denver show features displays from manufacturers of log and timber frame home manufacturers, pre-fabricated 2x4 and 2x6 house packages, and finished building products such as roofing, flooring, decking, and rustic furniture. Over the past few years, a number of BC Wood members from the log and timber frame home sector have used the Denver show to maintain a toe hold in the US market while they cut back on some of their other promotional activities during the slower economic times.

The B.C. log and timber frame builders have remained active in a number of regional markets in the U.S., like the Rocky Mountain States, because it has been one of the few areas that have has shown some activity. The Rocky Mountain States, due to their close geographic proximity to BC, product acceptance, and the clustering of resort developments catering to a wealthy demographic, have continued to be a relatively strong market for BC producers.

The feedback from the members attending recent Denver shows has been generally very positive. The number of attendees, while not back to pre-2008 levels, has been growing each year since 2011. Most exhibitors reported a more positive attitude from the attendees at the show. Individuals who had been hesitant over the past few years to take the final step towards building their projects came to the show ready to build.

For more background on the Denver show or to register to exhibit at this event, please do not hesitate to contact me at bhawrysh@bcwood.com
