B.C. forest sector boom causes labour shortage
CBC News - January 25, 2013

B.C.'s forest sector is booming again and those in the industry say rising price of lumber is leading to a labour crunch.

Exports to China, a revitalized U.S. housing market and a hurricane on the East Coast have driven lumber prices to heights not seen in seven years - about $400 per thousand board feet dimension lumber.

MaryAnne Arcand with the Central Interior Logging Association says the problem now is getting skilled workers. "This is the first time in B.C.'s logging lumber history where we had two big customers and so there is a lot more demand," she said. "It just creates that situation where demand outstrips supply and now we've got to try and catch up to it."

Arcand says the problem so acute those in the industry are doing something the oil sector has done for decades - bringing in workers from the East Coast.

Launch of the FPIntell LAB
Barbara Bell - January 29, 2013

FPInnovations has created an online collaborative innovation platform called the FPIntell LAB. This unique site will bring together diverse minds to solve issues related to wood product innovation.

The first project is a design challenge called 'Re-Imagining Wood' which will try to solve the following query. 'How can the natural attributes of wood commonly seen as disadvantages, be re-imagined as assets to create novel, sustainable products?'

Creative individuals with a collaborative spirit and an interest in wood are invited to join in. You can participate a little or a lot, either way you are sure to learn something new, stretch your creativity and make valuable connections. In addition, there is $5000 worth of prize money. The concepts generated by this challenge will be used to spark further R&D and ultimately, to work toward a bio-products economy.

The challenge will run from January 28th, 2013 until April 5th, 2013.

Wood in Communities - 3 New Video's from Naturally Wood
naturallywood.com

Naturally Wood has released three new videos profiling how wood construction has been used in three BC communities. Check out their Wood in Communities playlist on youtube.com.

NSCU Environmental Learning Centre - A Natural Approach to Learning
The North Shore Credit Union Environmental Learning Centre (ELC) is an addition to the North Vancouver Outdoor School (NVOS) located in Brackendale near Squamish, British Columbia.

The ELC is constructed with cross-laminated timber (CLT), which is a large multi-layer wooden panel made of lumber, and engineered for strength through laminations of different layers placed cross-wise to the adjacent layers. The centre also features a glulam column and beam super-structure made from engineered timbers consisting of wood laminations that are bonded together with strong, waterproof adhesives, creating an ideal structural component.

Mass timber systems are very large, complete wall, floor and roof sections made from engineered wood products, and used in a variety of building types and sizes. These products offer significant benefits in terms of fire, acoustic and structural performance; scale possibilities, rigidity, strength, stability and construction efficiency.

Elkford Community Conference Centre
Set to become a cultural hub for the 3,000 residents of Elkford, the Elkford Community Conference Centre is expected to enhance the community's ability to deliver programs and host functions and events. Using structural wood construction to conserve energy and reduce the Centre's environmental footprint, it is truly a showcase for wood innovation.

The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) wall panels in the Centre is the first commercial application in North America. CLT panels are used as the shear walls to resist the high wind load for the building, demonstrating CLT's strength and stiffness. This project also used glulam and laminated veneer lumber beams supported on the CLT walls or perimeter columns. SIP panels have been used on the roof and external wall cladding due to their highly efficient insulating property.

North Vancouver City Hall - A Community Space

The City of North Vancouver Civic Centre Renovation is a showcase for wood innovation, with state-of-the-art design fabrication behind the roof panel system, and an inventive new floor system.

The City Hall is constructed with Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL) roof panel systems. LSL is a process which involves cutting wood into thin strands which are then glued together using a steam-injection process. The stranded lumber roof panels provide structural support, architectural beauty, conceal all electrical and mechanical systems and absorb sound.

The composite floor system consists of glulam post and beams supporting the concrete floor slab, a first in British Columbia, Canada and the U.S. This project demonstrates "multiple function components" at a new level, with ceiling/roof panels that integrate services in a single easy-to-install element.

Industry News - FPInnovations Update
Harmony by Makihara Increases Sales by Posting Video of its New Product Testing Initiative

Getting more potential customers to see your products, let along buy them, is a challenge all manufacturers face. But for small businesses, such as Harmony by Makihara, a Richmond B.C. based manufacturer of wood flooring, moving up the rankings in Google is even tougher due to the hundreds of competitors in the wood flooring marketplace.

Owner Wes Makihara believed in the performance of his product but wanted some good hard numbers to back up his claims. To help in getting this important message across to their clients, Harmony worked with FPInnovations to produce a short video that showed the actual test procedures being carried out and to visually show the performance of the product.

Says Wes Makihara of the video, "Having FPInnovations perform the impact test to the industry standard gives our product credibility and this is important for small business that have to consistently prove their claims... the professional looking video helps us showcase our unique product and get an edge".

The impact test on Harmony by Makihara's new walnut veneered engineered wood flooring demonstrated the company's belief that by using thinner veneer over a birch plywood substrate, the impact resistance of the flooring would not be adversely affected. This innovation would permit Harmony to use a higher grade of veneer for the same cost as using a thicker veneer and still provide the same degree of dent resistance. The test result demonstrated that thin veneer not only performed as well as thicker veneer, but actually improved the dent resistance of the flooring.

Working with Canada West Flooring Solutions Inc., the distributor of Makihara's Harmony-brand engineered wood flooring, the video was posted so that potential customers could see for themselves the extent to which Harmony goes to validate their claims of providing innovation in flooring.   To see the short video clip, click here

Many wood products in the marketplace already must meet the requirements of standard tests to ensure product performance and consumer safety. Some other products, while not requiring testing, can benefit from a systematic testing process to ensure product consistency. To find out how you can test your products, improve your manufacturing processes, and rest easier at night, call Roland at FPInnovations (604) 222-5672, roland.baumeister@fpinnovations.ca

3 Tips For International Trade Show Exhibiting
Skyline Tradeshow Tips - January 22, 2013

Making a lasting impression isn't always the same as making a good  impression, particularly when you are trying to woo international leads.  When you use trade show displays to convey your message at an international event, you should assume that you will  encounter visitors from other countries that are valuable players in your  industry, and who are interested in what your business has to offer.  The difficult aspect of this is to gain their interest and respect without damaging  a potential business relationship because you were ignorant of certain social rules surrounding their behavior and expectations.

There are a few things you  can do to successfully network with foreign visitors.  Keep the following  guidelines from an international trade show company in mind as you demonstrate  your products or services.

Read Their Body Language

Americans tend to engage each other quickly and interact physically as well  as with words and gestures.  Some countries have a different concept of how close  is appropriate for business peers.  If you are talking to guests and they seem to be trying to retreat behind your bannerstands, you've probably invaded their  personal space.  Follow their lead rather than taking the lead when greeting.  More than one exhibitor has a horror story about global  business misunderstandings. Let your guests take the lead in your company's  trade show displays.

Spotlight: British Columbia Timberframe Co.
Rumin Mann

British Columbia Timberframe Co. designs, manufactures, and builds quality timber frame homes. Their designers work in partnership with homeowners, architects, and builders to design and tailor the customer's home to suit their present and future needs. Each frame is architecturally designed in-house using CAD software, translated into code, and cut by a Hundegger K2 CNC Machine. Such software and machines have transformed the timber frame industry, allowing them to guarantee an accurate frame cut and easy on-site assembly.

Not only does BC Timberframe use advanced software and equipment to maximize efficiency, they stay current with the latest market demands and trends. In addition to timber frames, they recently began to offer pre-fabricated wall and roof panels designed specifically to work with timber frame construction. Using an innovative wood fiber insulating product from Germany, they have constructed panels that range from basic building code to Passive House requirements, allowing one to achieve their desired energy efficiency within their budget.

This Squamish, BC based, innovative company is now in their 13th year. Having always been a boutique timber frame company located in the epicenter of arguably the best wood in the world, Coastal Douglas Fir, they have placed themselves close to the source. Coastal Douglas Fir grows in an optimal environment at an ideal pace, producing structurally superior timbers that have become the foundation of BC Timberframe. Each log is selected specifically for timber frame construction, allowing them to ensure the consistent quality of their product.

BC Timberframe works on projects that range from 600 sqft cabins and small outdoor pavilions to 10,000 sqft dream homes. They offer both kit homes with lock-up services to complete architectural and timber frame custom designs. When natural timbers are unable to meet the structural requirements of the design, they offer Grain Matched Glulams that have the benefits of glue-laminated timber with the natural look of solid-sawn timber. Furthermore, they have developed unique joinery techniques that minimize the visual impact of shrinkage with their 20 years of collective timber frame design and manufacturing experience.

BC value-added wood products sector pursuing new wood markets in Turkey - Turkeybuild, Istanbul, Turkey - April 24-28th, 2013

Brian Hawrysh

For the past two years, BC Wood has coordinated highly successful market development activities in the Eastern European markets of Russia, the Ukraine, and Turkey. The strongest of these regional economies has been Turkey. Turkey is the fastest growing OECD market, and the region's top performer. Turkey also has a long history and affinity of building with wood which gave way to a focus on concrete construction in the post WWII period. With their growing affluence, Turks are rediscovering their traditional preference for wood construction, particularly, in higher-end residential and recreational home construction.

For these reasons, BC Wood decided to explore opportunities for BC's value-added sector in Turkey. Last May, four BC companies and BC Wood's representative attended the Turkeybuild show and reported that there was very strong interest shown in BC's products and services by the local timber and building materials distributors. The products that generated the most interest were higher-end solid wood building products and interior finishing materials. Turkish companies showed a great deal of interest in partnering with Canadian companies that produce innovative higher quality wood products.

During the period of April 24-28th, BC Wood will attend the Turkeybuild show in the country's economic centre, Istanbul. Last year, the Istanbul show drew over 110,000 visitors, many of them were from the neighboring Eastern European and Islamic countries. At Turkeybuild, exhibitors can showcase a full range of building materials and systems. High quality specialty lumber and building materials such as WRC decking, siding and roofing, log and timber frame homes, and prefabricated house packages will be of interest to the Turkish lumber importers, architects, and builders.

For the 2013 Turkeybuild, BC Wood will organize a display of member companies and other Canadian forest products associations. For more information regarding this event, BC Wood's participation, and costs, please contact Brian Hawrysh at 604-882-7100 or by email at bhawrysh@bcwood.com.

Japan Market Update: First of the Canada-Tohoku Reconstruction Projects Completed

Jim Ivanoff

Mayor & Ambassador

It has been almost two years since 3/11 and with most of the clean-up now done, the reconstruction work is expected to move ahead at full steam this year. The Canada-Tohoku Reconstruction Project has been at the forefront of the reconstruction in Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture and we are proud to announce that the Donguri Anne Library project was completed on January 18th. Canada's new Ambassador to Japan, Mackenzie Clugston, as well as NRCan's Director General, Glenn Mason, were on hand to celebrate along with many representatives of the Canadian wood products industry.

The library project has been very well received by the local community. The mayor and other town officials repeatedly praised the Canadian effort to rebuild this crucial community gathering place. The exposed Canada Tsuga (hem-fir) posts and beams created a warm but dynamic interior that will welcome locals for years and years to come. The beautiful WRC on the outside of the building also stands in sharp contrast to the cold concrete structure that is being replaced (the original building suffered extensive damage in the 9.0 earthquake and is currently being demolished). However, watching locals and in particular children rush in to borrow books as soon as the ceremony had been completed was the most rewarding scene of the day.

January 18th was actually a double celebration as we also held the ground breaking ceremony for the Yuriage Market reconstruction project immediately following the library opening. The market project is much larger and also more complicated as the original facility was ground zero for the tsunami. As a result, reconstruction in that part of Natori City has been slowed by fears of future disasters. One of the countermeasures that has been taken is to raise the ground level between 70-400cm. Natori City finally completed the ground raising for the market area in December which has allowed us to proceed with construction.

Once again, the local community came out to thank Canada for helping rebuild this area. The ground breaking was extensively covered by local print and television media, demonstrating the importance of this market which before the earthquake was the largest and most famous in the Tohoku region. The chairman of the association that runs Yuriage on behalf of the city became emotional as he explained how this project will be the cornerstone of the entire area's rebirth once it is officially open in early May. I am very much looking forward to that day which will see people return to this now empty and eerily quiet former neighbourhood.
