Testimonials from previous workshops:
"This course was exactly the hands-on, 'what can we do right now,' kind of information that I have been wanting to learn" "This seminar was worth far more than the time and money spent. Despite the tough economy we have more than doubled our sales and while competitors are dropping their prices, we've just raised ours." "I attended your seminar today on how to make trade shows pay. I took a four year Business Management Degree program that included various marketing courses. I felt like I learned more tips and practical information in your seminar than I did in my four years of schooling." |
Industry News | U.S. housing starts hit four-year high
Globe and Mail - November 20, 2012 U.S. housing starts rose to their highest rate in more than four years in October, suggesting the housing market recovery was gaining steam, even though permits for future construction fell. The Commerce Department said on Tuesday housing starts increased 3.6 per cent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 894,000 units - the highest since July 2008. September's starts were revised down to show a 863,000-unit pace instead of the previously reported 872,000 units. Economists had expected groundbreaking to slow to a 840,000-unit rate last month. The department said superstorm Sandy, which slammed the East Coast in late October, had a minimal impact on the data. The Northeast accounted for about 8 per cent of overall housing starts. Groundbreaking in the Northeast fell 6.5 per cent. Click here to read the entire article

| Mill produces value-added product
Alberni Valley Times - November 27, 2012 Coulson Group of Companies develops an old-growth cedar wood flooring that is in high demand An expanded lumber mill in the Alberni Valley, owned by Coulson Group of Companies, is taking old-growth cedar wood as far as it can possibly go. The expansion to Coulson Manufacturing Ltd. has created a product that is the first of its kind. It is a strip of plywood with a cedar face, and, according to CEO Wayne Coulson, it allows the mill to produce 10 times the amount of product for a lower cost. "It's been great," said Foster Coulson, operations manager for the expansion. We've been getting a lot of traction in the market." Gluing a thin strip of cedar to a thick strip of plywood is an idea that is new to the wood industry. The Coulsons call it a "value-added" product, and it is currently being shipped from the Alberni Valley to eastern Canada, Colorado, California, Australia and Europe. It is also now available in RONA Canada stores. "It's a diminishing resource," Foster said of old growth cedar. "What we're doing is creating sustainability." The expansion to the mill, which opened in late May, has also added 12 new jobs, with a possible six more on the way if the mill starts running a third shift shift. | The Impact of Future Mandated Energy Efficiency Requirements on the Canadian Log Building Industry
In Canada, there are two methods that can be followed to ensure a log home meets mandated (national or provincial building codes) energy efficiency requirements: a prescriptive method and a performance based method. The prescriptive method clearly sets out minimum standards for each component and they must be met. No measurements or modeling is required which in turn makes it easy to follow. The performance method has thermal performance minimums and how these are to be met are up to each builder - a full selection of building products and practices can be used as long as they can meet the performance requirement. Proving compliance requires computer modeling and/or other calculations and testing to be performed. The EnerGuide Rating System (ERS) is the performance modeling tool used in Canada for determining energy efficiency and Hot2000 is the software used to calculate estimated energy consumption for a home. This consumption is compared to a benchmark consumption value and an ERS rating, ranging between 0 and 100 is given to a home. The 2012 National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), which many of the provincial building codes are based upon, proposes that a new home must achieve a minimum ERS 80. Achieving such a rating can be accomplished by ensuring a home has adequate insulation in the walls and attic, energy sufficient windows, exterior doors and that the house is well sealed to retain heat. As well, a house should incorporate energy efficient mechanical services and appliances such a high efficiency space heating, hot water heater and heat recovery ventilator. | The Illustrated Guide to Log Home Construction
This is a very unique book that focuses exclusively on converting the log shell into a finished home. It is a must-have guide for builders, general contractors and do-it yourself enthusiasts. It covers steps right from the foundations to ensure that the sill log will be tightly sealed, all the way to the installation of kitchen cabinets in a manner that will allow the logs to settle without damaging the cabinetry. Each chapter of this book shows one aspect of the finishing process and provides several options using a diverse selection of techniques and products available today. Three-dimensional colour drawings depict the placement of sealants, e.g., gaskets, wind-proofing membranes and vapour barriers, and explicitly show how to use and install them so that they effectively perform their function. The book is invaluable educational material and food-for-thought when developing new log building solutions and assemblies. "This book is a giant step towards demystifying the process of turning a log shell into an outstanding dream home." Wayne Sparshu, Spar-Log Homes Inc., Alberta, Canada "Log Homes are everyone's dream home. Building with logs is truly an art and a science. This essential guide details the necessary provisions to complete the dream and avoid the nightmares of guesswork." Robert Savignac, Arbor Vitae Log Craft, British Columbia, Canada "This book promotes the observation and understanding of the separate parts of the building process puzzle. It provides creative common sense solutions that have evolved through the open sharing of ideas by a network of focused log building professionals. The result yields enduring end-user satisfaction, creating more work for all." Donald L. Breimhurst, Home Field Advantage Ltd., Pennsylvania, USA "This is critical, timely information that has been long overdue!" Specifier Program Update | Roy Manion
We are indeed in the midst of a busy schedule with the Specifiers Program. Currently the following sessions have been booked: 28-Nov-12 Robert Ciccozzi Architecture 04-Dec-12 Mallen Gowing Berzins Architecture 05-Dec-12 Site Lines Architecture 06-Dec-12 TRB Architecture 10-Dec-12 Peter Rose Architecture + Interiors 19-Dec-12 GBL Architects 08-Jan-13 Studio One Architecture 14-Jan-13 Graham Hoffart Mathiasen Architects 17-Jan-13 Urban Arts Architecture Jan-13 Burrowes Huggins Architects Jan-13 Craven Huston Powers Architects Jan-13 Merrick Architecture The actual dates for the last 3 will be finalized in early January. All of these sessions are overviews of BC's value-added wood industry and companies. I am pleased to advise that all these sessions are with new firms who obviously want to learn more about our industry and the companies in it. Also, of the firms we contact, over 75% want us to come in and educate them; a testament to the importance specifiers are placing on learning more about our wood products. I fully expect that by the Christmas break, we will have January full and will be booking into February. For the record, we fully expect to book another 20 - 25 Lunch & Learn (L&L) sessions by the end of March, over and above the ones listed above. Notices have already gone out to those companies participating in the Specifiers Program as we encourage companies to join us at each session where we have room (we have a limit of 2 participants per session). If you are not in the Program, but wish to join us in a session just to get a feel for its effectiveness or just want to check it out, let me know. Also, we have not forgotten the construction sector and we still plan on holding sessions with members of both the Vancouver Regional Construction Association and the Independent Construction Business Association in the first two months of the New Year. Both associations have encouraged us to do so and we are very pleased to accommodate their requests. Also in the New Year, we will be holding group sessions in Victoria, Nanaimo, Kelowna, and Kamloops. We are open to Lunch & Learn sessions anywhere in BC. As always, if you have a product or products that you feel is or are of value to any of the groups that BC Wood reaches out to with the Specifier Program, please contact me to discuss how to go about effectively doing this. We would be pleased to assist in any way we can. My contact information is rmanion@bcwood.com or call me at BC Wood's office. |
BC's Forest Products Industry in Montreal for the Wood Convention
|
Brian Hawrysh
The momentum for the 2013 Montreal Wood Convention is definitely beginning to pick up. A quick review of the registration website, www.montrealwoodconvention.com/en, shows a good number of Eastern Canadian and US distributors have already signed up. The Montreal Wood Convention follows on the storied tradition of the Canadian Lumberman's convention. For almost 100 years, the Lumberman's Convention brought together representatives from the Canadian lumber industry and distributors from both sides of the border. The Montreal Wood Convention is expected to do the same.
BC Wood will attend the Montreal Wood Convention in support of the BC forest products industry. We are planning on hosting an Industry networking luncheon on Thursday, Feb 13th and have arranged for a discounted registration fee for BC Wood members. BC Wood must advise the convention organizers of those companies who qualify for the discounted registration fee. So, please contact me to take advantage of the discounted convention registration fee or if you have any general questions regarding the Montreal Wood Convention. I can be reached by email at bhawrysh@bcwood.com or by phone in the BC Wood office at 604-882-7100.

Holzhaus 2012 Show Report
| BC Wood participated in Holzhaus 2012 in Moscow, Russia, early in November. This return to the market was based on the success from attending the same show in 2011. During that initial visit, it became clear to manufacturers that this large (audience base) and geographically expansive marketplace has considerable opportunity for sales of our member products. Successful contracts have already been secured by members who have participated in this program, with market indicators suggesting further growth in this area will be realized in the next 24 months.
Holzhaus 2012 This trade show is one of the many construction industry exhibitions held in the Moscow area each year. This show focuses primarily on wood framed housing and features 90% local products. While the exhibition hall was dominated by local manufacturers of Siberian pine products, the presence of our BC Wood pavilion drew considerable attention from the show attendees. Local laminated log products and large diameter (Pine) handcrafted products featured heavily in the show. BC Wood showcased five member companies in the pavilion and featured a diverse range of products from handcrafted log structures and machine cut log homes, to specialty Western Red Cedar products. Although this show was billed as a business to business show, there were examples of consumers in attendance who were visiting the show with plans and construction projects in hand. As a group, BC Wood members were able to gather qualified show leads and also make crucial introductions to key industry partners who showed interest in representing BC's manufacturers. The Canadian Embassy once again hosted a meet-and-greet event that enabled members to interact with some of Moscow's prominent construction companies and prospective partners. Last year, we reported that the market opportunity for members was in Log and Timber Frame products along with speciality WRC products. This is certainly the case and I would add that there is a niche opportunity for the remanufactured products sector, as well as the millwork sector. Below are some market observations that should enable BC companies to increase market share in this area. Click here to read the entire article

China Market Update: Woodmac China 2013
|
Jim Ivanoff
Woodmac China 2013
The 12th International Forestry and Woodworking Machinery and Supplies Exhibition
Featuring:
--Furnitek (furniture parts and hardware)
--Woodbuild (construction lumber)
Date: March 5th-8th, 2013
Venue: SNIEC (Shanghai New International Expo Centre)
Woodmac China is the leading specialized exhibition in China for manufacturers and suppliers to the wood industry. Delivered on a professional platform for over 20 years, the show has built firmly on its ability to draw a strong buyer audience from all regions of China and extend its reach to bring increasing numbers of buyers from overseas. Last time, the Woodmac showcased 35,000 square-meters of products from 18 countries and regions and attracted 16,730 visitors, growing by 22%. BC Wood has been attending this tradeshow for 10 years. During the last event in 2011, BC Wood participated in Woodmac China together with 8 member companies and the participating companies reported good sales from Chinese wooden products manufacturers and lumber dealers. BC Wood will be returning to the WoodMac 2013 from March 5th - 8th. From our previous experience at this show, we expect that the best opportunities for new contacts and increased exposure in the marketplace will be achieved by manufacturers of engineered wood products, softwood, and hardwood lumber. BC Wood organized a strong Canadian Pavilion at Woodmac 2011 and we hope to build an even stronger presencefor 2013. Members who are interested in participating in this show should contact Jim Ivanoff ( ivanoff@canadawood.jp) for more information. |
