FROM PTA PRESIDENT DENNIS JOHNSON
Greetings! Homecoming and first report cards are behind us, while Halloween decorations are up at our house.
Time to focus in on upcoming events.
1. Calendar items
a. FWISD ISD Bond Package
Get educated on the subject and exert your right to vote. This evening is a great chance to learn more, FWISD Superintendent Walter Dansby will be reporting on the state of the school district and be answering questions about the bond election. The meeting starts at 7pm at the FWISD building at 3150 McCart (just south of Berry). Early voting started today and runs through November 1, with November 5 being Election Day.
b. Financial Aid Night/PTA General Meeting
Mark your calendars for 6pm on Tuesday October 29 in the Library. A great chance to learn about the college application process, loans, scholarships, etc. Also you can learn a bit more about your PTA. We will be voting on our Nominating Committee for next year, which has the key task of putting together our PTA Officer/Board slate for next school year. The current nominees for the Committee are Jackie Ferguson/Angela Fleming/Molly Hyry/Debra Million/Sarah Tempel and Veronica Villegas (Alternate). Nominations will be accepted from the floor as well that evening.
c. Interact with Principal Mossige
As previously announced, the PTA is sponsoring another coffee on Friday November 1 in the cafeteria at 8:45am before our PTA Board Meeting. Show your interest and attend.
2. Naviance System
The PTA has stepped up with funding for this student/parent friendly system to prepare for and track the college application process. We still need assistance in completing our fundraising. See the related article for information on how to contribute.
3. Congrats to Principal Mossige
There are so many Atta girls/Atta boys that could be written about the Paschal community. One that I think is of special interest is that this past weekend, our Principal was honored with O.D. Bounds Award at Texas Wesleyan University. The award is presented to an alum involved in athletics who exemplifies the work, character and contributions made by O.D. Bounds, Jr., a Texas Wesleyan alum/faculty member/coach. Way to go Terri, or should I say Dr. Mossige!

Dearest Paschal Parents,
I am so pleased to pass on some wonderful news that has transpired this summer. Paschal High School will be the only high school in the FWISD to bring online The Naviance System. Below, I have provided an overview and a link to the Naviance website to help explain what a wonderful opportunity this is for PHS students and their families.
Naviance helps students and families connect what students do in the classroom to their life goals, including finding colleges and careers based on their personal skills and areas of interest. This system has extraordinary capabilities and is currently in use by most, if not all, the private schools in our area.
Naviance will help all of our students to set personalized goals, explore career options and search for colleges. The greatest aspect, I think, is it allows students to apply for scholarships and TRACK their ADMISSION STATUS. Personal information, accurate transcripts, test scores and all letters of recommendation your child obtains for college applications are held in one secure location that is accessible to 1800 colleges and universities across the nation as well as the NCAA clearing house for our student athletes. Naviance is fully integrated with the Common App used by most colleges and universities in the United States. For more detailed information, go to www.naviance.com .
There have been bumps in this road as are in all roads to change but we now have a green light to begin uploading our student info. PHS PTA and a few parents on the board have provided one half of the $13,000 needed for this year's subscription to the service.
I am writing today to ask you to consider making a donation to fund the remaining balance. ANY amount that you can give helps out students charting their future.is welcome. $20...$40...$60... $5 is welcome. Together this goal is achievable. We have an August 30th deadline.
Checks should be written to PHS PTA. Please write Naviance in the memo line so that all of these funds go directly to this fund raising effort. This is a tax deductible donation. Any money raised beyond our need for this year's subscription will be held in the PTA account for the 2014-15 subscription.
Please mail your donations to:

Student Access to Focus
Paschal High School's United Voices 4 Change (INOK) has an opportunity to win one of 10 $100,000 grants from State Farm during the next week. From Oct 18-25, the schools with the most safe driving sign ups-see below will have a chance at over 100 cash prizes and a concert by Kelly Clarkson. We are reaching out to all PHS organizations for assistance. Anything you can do to publicize, Facebook, tweet, etc... will be appreciated. Each person can do it once per day. Please see below for more information. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Andrews-Cox at jennifer.andrewscox@fwisd.org
Online safe driving commitments may be made through www.celebratemydrive.com or
www.facebook.com/celebratemydrive.
Here are the basics:
- User enters email address & birth date. This page will verify users are 14+ years of age. Users who are 13 or under will not be allowed to continue through the process.
- Qualified users will search for & select from a list of registered high schools.
- Users will answer two driver safety-related questions. Correct answers will be provided and the user will be allowed to continue even if his/her answer(s) were incorrect. Every day these questions will have a different theme such as seat belt safety, speed, or distracted driving.
- The next screen invites the user to make a commitment to safe driving. Qualified users are able to make one safe driving commitment every day from October 18-26th.
- Finally, the user will encounter a "Thank You for Committing" page where they will find where their school ranks and see the current total number of commitments for their school. This page will also invite them to check out other State Farm Teen Driver Safety resources.
- The next time a user enters the commitment tool, some data will be recalled by the system.
