Paschal High School
PTA NEWS BLAST
Sept. 23, 2012

From PTA President Debra Million

High School has always been an interesting mix of the silly, the scholarly and the serious. It was that way when I was in high school and it's still that way today at Paschal.

The silliness is part of what makes up our fun memories of high school. The events this week for Homecoming will make memories that our teenagers should always enjoy. Wear your favorite team colors or concert T-shirt for Fan Day. Dress as wild as possible for Tacky Tourist Day. Break out the cowboy hats or space helmets for Cowboys and Aliens Day. Dress as Your Pet Day? That should be silly and interesting. End the week with Spirit Day in a Homecoming T-shirt or your favorite purple and white ensemble. Come to the game on Friday; see girls wearing Homecoming mums bigger than your head and scream and cheer when Homecoming King and Queen are announced.

Scholarly is the word that comes to mind when you see the list of AP and Honors classes taken by Paschal students.   You think of it when you see sophomores and juniors honored with admission to the Paschal Academic Societies and seniors becoming members of National Honor Society. You saw it in the local newspaper earlier this month when National Merit Semi-finalists were announced. Once again, Paschal leads the entire North Texas area with 18 Semifinalists. You would have to combine all the remaining public and private schools in Fort Worth to match that number.

Finally, we can never ignore the serious issues that our students face in high school. Since my daughter is a sophomore, many of her friends have become new drivers. Be sure to encourage your child to be safe when driving. Tell them to give themselves plenty of time to get to school so they don't feel the need to speed. Teenagers think they are invincible. Keep reminding them to wear their seatbelt. And above all else, please tell them again and again not to text while driving. Last year in Texas, 2,058 people were killed due to texting and driving. Be an example for your driver and don't text yourself. No text is worth your life.

Enjoy the silly side of high school this week. Congratulate our scholars, and help your student face the serious issues with patience and an open heart.

Happy Homecoming!
