Call for 2015 MAWS Board Nominations

Join the Board of Directors! The next MAWS Conference and Annual Meeting is coming up on November 20th. A few members of our current Board of Directors will not be running for re-election, and we'd like to invite you to consider bringing all of your talents to furthering our mission to promote the health and well-being of women and families in Washington State through the profession of midwifery.

Board members take an active role in the work of MAWS. The Board typically meets once per month. Most meetings are in the Seattle area, though members can call in to meetings--so it is possible to join from a distance. Learn more about Board participation here and learn more about your role as a Board member here

Keep in mind our board is not just made of midwives. We welcome consumers and people in all fields that support midwifery in the state of Washington!

Here are just some of the positions we are looking to fill:
Nominations Committee Chair
Fundraising Committee Chair
Birth Center Representative
Anti-Racism Committee Members

If you're interested in getting on this fall's ballot, please email your name and bio (or that of a colleague, with their permission). Nominations must be received by Friday, October 2, 2015. Questions? Please email them to Amanda info@washingtonmidwives.org.
Legend Drugs and Devices

Midwifery Chapter 246-834 WAC is being updated and the Department of Health is asking for your input. As you know, I am updating most sections of the midwifery chapter 246-834 WAC. Attached is draft language for legend drugs and devices. Please let me know what you think. This will not be your last chance to comment. We are early in the process of re-writing the language and you will have more comment periods in the future for all parts of the chapter.

Also, per statute, this particular section on legend drugs and devices must be shared with the midwifery advisory committee, the pharmacy quality assurance commission and the medical quality assurance commission for their input.

Have a great weekend and thanks for any input you provide!

Have you done your Peer Review yet?

If not, let MAWS help! The protected safe space of Peer Review and Incident Review enables midwives to freely discuss clinical cases with their peers providing them with an opportunity to improve their practice and future outcomes.

Two branches of the QMP program provide mechanisms for quality improvement:
  • Peer Review which each midwife must complete on a regular basis every 2 years with at least 3 other professional MAWS members (professional MAWS members must be WA State Licensed Midwives)

  • Incident Review which is organized by the QMP committee and is conducted by a specially convened panel whenever an outcome occurs which meets "Sentinel Event" criteria
     and warrants a review.

If you are a MAWS member in need of a Peer Review, organize one! Now anyone can organize a Peer Review as long as s/he:
    1. Is a current MAWS member.
    2. Has participated in at least one Peer Review before.
    3. Contact Christine Tindal in order to receive all of the necessary, updated and official paperwork and verify the member status of participants (as every midwife who participates in your Peer Review MUST be a current MAWS member).
Interested in our All-Region Peer Review? Please contact Christine Tindal. This is usually done just before or just after our Fall Conference in November.
 2015 Flu Documents Update

The flu documents have been reviewed and updated to 2015. When we have the funding the changes will be translated into the other languages. For now the Spanish, Russian and Vietnamese version are the 2014 edition.

Remember when sharing with colleagues, it is best to share the HERE record link so folks know when this was reviewed and updated and that they have the most current version. That link tells folks what languages are available and has the links.  The patient handouts are easily downloaded and copied for your patients.
