Newborn Screening fee changes
For midwives only

The Newborn Screening law (RCW 70.83.020) was amended during the 2014 legislative session.

  1. The law is expanded to require newborn screening for all babies born in any setting in Washington State, including out-of-hospital births.
  2. Each hospital or health care provider attending an out-of-hospital birth is required to collect the newborn screening specimen no later than 48 hours following birth.
  3. This initial blood specimen must be received by the Newborn Screening Laboratory within 72 hours of collection (excluding Sundays and Thanksgiving).
  4. For all babies requiring further diagnostic testing, primary care providers are required to report to Newborn Screening the date they notified the parent/guardian.
  5. The Newborn Screening Program will publish an annual report regarding hospitals' compliance in meeting the 72 hour transit and 48 hour specimen collection timelines.

The law goes into effect on June 12, 2014. Please contact the Department of Health at 206-418-5410 if you have questions about how these changes may affect you and your practice.  Thank you for your continued support and cooperation in saving babies!

Your input wanted for Birth Assistant survey!
For midwives only, please

The following update and request for survey participation was posted by MAC member Sunita Iyer ND, LM, CPM.  Your input is needed.  Read below for more information.

The topic of our Birth Assistants has been a regular occurrence at our quarterly MAC meetings for nearly 2 years. Many of us have been using Birth Assistants for years and many of us have evolved into it more recently. There has been enough momentum over the years that Birth Assistants are emerging as their own profession. At the same time, this relationship between midwives and un-regulated professionals has also arrived on the radar of the DOH. Although the complaints and events are very, very rare, the recommendation is that we find ways to safeguard this profession and midwives' reliance upon birth assistants.

The topic arose again this past week at our MAC meeting. As the chair of the committee, I did agree to do some reconnaissance via an anonymous survey to find out what midwives would like to see happen going forward.

The survey link is posted below and the Medical Assistant document referenced will be attached. The survey is open now and will stay open for the summer as our next MAC meeting is not until September 10th.

This is anonymous and any information you provide will not and cannot be used in any way, shape, or form against you. This is strictly for information gathering purposes. Please feel free to share this with any WA-based midwives.

Thank you!
