Greetings!

Thank you for taking good care of mommas this Mother's Day and everyday!  Those of us on the MAWS Board know that the work of midwives and childbirth professionals can sometimes feel overwhelming, so we want to say say a special thank you today for all that you do on behalf of mothers and babies.

As you know, the Midwives' Model of Care is mother-centered with a focus on her physical, psychological, and social well-being throughout the childbearing cycle.  Thank you for your commitment to individualized education and counseling, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and birth, and for the support you provide mothers in the postpartum period.  Your commitment to the midwifery model of care is measurable.  We are grateful for the contribution you make to mothers: reducing the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section all while guiding babies safely and gently into their mother's arms.

Happy Mother's Day!

Buy the Essential Homebirth Guide for a Mother in Your Life

The Essential Homebirth Guide, a book for families planning or considering birthing at home, was released recently by Gallery Books, a division of Simon and Schuster. Local authors Jodilyn Owen, LM, CPM and Jane E. Drichta, CPM wrote this guide to demonstrate the gentle, holistic work that midwifery care embodies. It takes parents through pregnancy, birth, and early mothering, and illustrates trust in mothers and babies and gentle, woman-centered care. The authors model shared decision making, encouraging parents to discuss the issues that come up during pregnancy and birth, and work through them from evidence and heart-led perspectives.

The book is full of stories from families who share their experiences and illustrate the diverse and meaningful journey that parents take on the road to birth and early parenting. It is not a text book for midwives in the classic sense, but may serve to inspire a commitment to continuity of care and relationship development with clients. The authors have been featured on Dr. Christian Northrup's radio show, where she praised their work in reminding women to own their healthcare and to seek support from qualified, gentle, and loving providers.

The Essential Homebirth Guide is available everywhere books are sold. Jodilyn recently opened the community-oriented Essential Birth & Family Center in South Seattle, and Jane is working with Shanti Uganda, providing international doula trainings and support for this organization which promotes women's and girl's health and abilities to sustain their families through commerce. They can be found online at EssentialMidwifery.com. Buy the book here.
