Hello, This is Your Captain Speaking
by Bob Doman

"Hello, this is your captain speaking. Welcome aboard. We are presently flying at thirty-nine thousand feet on our flight from Atlanta to London. We are expecting a smooth flight and anticipate an on-time arrival in London at 10:05 PM GMT. We hope you enjoy your flight."

"Hello, this is your pilot speaking. It appears we are now going to be a bit late; one of our passengers, a fourth grade teacher from Nashville, thought it would be a great educational experience for us all to see the snow on the Rockies; so we took a little diversion-well, actually a rather significant diversion. You might not have noticed the Rockies or the snow since the entire area was covered in clouds, but we would all agree that she is a very nice lady and was quite well intentioned. But we are now headed east, the weather is looking fine, and again, we're sorry for the delay and will get back to you as soon as we figure out our new arrival time."

"Uh, hello, it's me again--your captain. We're sorry but we lost a bit more time coming back from out west. The passenger in 5C thought it would be a good idea to decrease our speed and fly at a lower altitude. He just got his pilot's license and he wanted us to follow the protocols he had been taught. Of course he was taught to fly a Piper Cub and has only soloed a few times; but he is a professional after all, and we didn't need to pay for his advice, something about insurance, but that doesn't matter. What a deal! I think we might have given the Donald a little scare when we almost knocked the top of Trump Tower in Chicago, though."

"Well, it's me again, your captain, and as I am sure you are aware, we did make a quick little unscheduled stop in New York City due to an overzealous air traffic controller who thought we should have originated our flight in New York, and you might have noticed that the ground crew took some time to unload our meals in favor of something they thought would provide us with better nutrition, but we are now back in the air and flying over Iceland and heading in the right direction. I have alerted the cabin crew, and we would like to offer you complimentary wine and free headsets. We hope you enjoy our movie, 'Mission Impossible 5.'"

"Hello, this is your copilot. Our captain is being detained. I mean, he is... uh...on a potty break. We unfortunately are not going to make it to London. We were told by flight control that the nice young couple in 23 A and B thought we would be happier visiting Paris and seeing the Eiffel Tower, so we are going to be accommodating, not rock the boat, so to speak, and fly to Paris rather than London. We hope you will not be inconvenienced and yes, I do realize that it already after 10 AM and that we are already over twelve hours late, and yes, I'm hungry too. Oh, and we do apologize for dinner, as you discovered, they not only removed all our meals, but replaced them with vitamin pills. But they did say that they had it on good authority that we would be better off with the pills They said that you might feel worse for a while, but that it was a good sign and you would be better off in the end. Some good news: the flight attendants tell me that they should have at least one of the lavatories back up and operating soon.

Please fasten your seat belts and remain in your seats, we seem to be experiencing a little turbulence."

As absurd as this little vignette sounds, this scenario rather replicates the trip many of you are on. You came to NACD because we shared your vision and goals for your child. We had the same destination and created a course. You came to us so that we could pilot you through the storms and get you where you wanted to go. You chose us because of our track record, our unique history of success, our incomparable experience, our eclectic philosophy, and most of all, the tens of thousands of our children all over the world who are demonstrating that you can expect more, get more, and who are redefining potential. At NACD we have one and only one agenda, which is to help you reach your goals for your children. We don't bring in a dozen folks and ask each to look at a piece of your child and establish their personal goals and incorporate their personal small bag of tricks. And we don't have limited expectations based on relatively limited experience, funding, or perspectives. For over thirty years we have been gaining unique experience, knowledge, and insights, have been adding to our already over 3,000 techniques, and have continued to develop new tools as needed. We operate from a parent's perspective, your perspective, which is essentially that we can never do this well enough or fast enough and thus are in favor and supportive of everything that works. Not everything, just everything that works.

Please help us do our jobs and let us help you coordinate the pieces and keep us going in the right direction. When you fly, your plane's computers and pilot are making constant course corrections to get you where you want to go when you want to get there. Please communicate with our crew, your coaches, often so we can help guide you and keep us all on course. The more we veer off course, the less likely we are to get where you want to go. Get help, get good help, but let us help coordinate the pieces and keep us heading in the right directions. Your goal is our goal; your destination is our destination. We're not here for the next few hours, the next month, or even just the next year; we're here for the whole trip.

Please communicate with your coaches and with your very experienced pilots/evaluators and let us help you coordinate all of the pieces and help you reach your goals. You're not another passenger on this flight-- you are the one defining the destination, and our job is to help get you there. Good luck if you fly without a pilot. We hate finally hearing from a family after weeks or months, only to discover that someone has pointed them in the wrong direction. Communicate--we know how to fly the plane, we know what buttons to push and which ones not to touch, and who probably shouldn't be in the cockpit. Choose the destination, but let us fly the plane for you. Piloting isn't an easy job, but trying to do it without all the information or with others nudging the plane in another directions can make it impossible. Let's get there before you run out of gas.

Our success is defined by only one thing--your child's success.

Update on Simply Smarter Kids - Memory
by Bob Doman
SSKids

Now that we have had families using our new Simply Smarter Kids-Memory App for a few months, I am very happy to report that not only is the app being enjoyed by many of our children and parents, but we are seeing an acceleration of our children's processing skills as well.

As many of you are learning, processing has gotten easier. For some it has gotten so much easier you may not quite realize that not only is it easier, it's better. A lot of our children's progress is accelerating.

I have had a few comments from parents that their kids were not doing as well on SSKids as in other sequential processing activities; but they had not realized that SSKids is addressing working memory more than short term memory and that the scores of SSKids correlate with reverse, not forward, digit spans.

From my personal observations in testing the younger or lower processing children in their evals, I believe the scores I am seeing with SSKids correlate better with what I am seeing in global cognitive function and behavior than any other processing activity.

To gain the most benefit from the app, keep changing it up. Jump between "Classic," "Auditory Only," "Visual Only," and "Reverse" and also between categories. If your child struggles with a category or approach, encourage them to do more of what is tough. That being said, however, keep sessions short and sweet, and please be an active participant as much as you can. Being present to supply encouragement and reinforcement is very powerful.

I am also very pleased with the number of parents who are using the app. If you haven't tried it yet, you may be in for a surprise. It's not as easy as it looks! And just for the record, if all of our parents could score 8s on SSKids, our children on program would probably all be doing better- perhaps much better. So Mom and Dad--go for it.

Sleeping & Breathing Problems: Sleep Apnea
by Steve Riggs, BS, RRT-NPS

Sleep is so important to our health, healing, and learning processes. It affects the way we feel during the day and most aspects of how we function. Our sleep can be compromised or interrupted for a number of reasons. One of the big factors contributing to sleep problems is related to breathing. Breathing problems at night range from things we think of as normal, such as snoring, to a range of other breathing problems. Children have many more problems with breathing at night then we might think. Children have smaller anatomical structures than larger people, so it is easier for them to have breathing obstructions and reduced breathing or blocked breathing for periods of time.

Let's look at these problems and see them for what they really are. Snoring in children is not uncommon and not often thought of as something needing treatment. When they snore it is often thought of as cute. However if the snoring is very loud, there are probably three things happening. First, they are undoubtedly mouth breathing, leaving them dried out and obstructing airflow to some degree. Second, the noise of snoring tends to keep the brain from going into a deeply restorative sleep. It would be like any other sound in the room. Watching it on brain wave equipment, one can easily observe that it keeps the brain from going in deep realms of restorative sleep. And third, the body is using more oxygen just to breathe a little harder, while at the same time possibly limiting or obstructing airflow enough to create low oxygen levels in the blood. That means less oxygen to the brain. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends evaluating all children that snore.

Even more serious than just snoring, though, is the issue of obstructive sleep apnea. About 10% of children snore, and of that 10%, 20 to 30% of them will have obstructive sleep apnea. It is estimated there are about 18 million people in America that have sleep apnea and 95% of them are undiagnosed and untreated. It is estimated that 2 million of these people are children.

Introducing
Sharon Haimovich, M.D.
Sharon Haimovich

We are delighted to welcome Sharon Haimovich, M.D., one of our NACD moms, as a full time member of our team. Over the years I have known Sharon as a dedicated mom; and then over the past 18 months as she has been training with us here in the Utah office, I have developed great respect for her eclectic medical knowledge, intelligence, and dedication to bringing knowledge and insight to parents.

Sharon will be helping us investigate biomedical treatments and creating nutritional protocols for specific populations, developing a database of families with children with developmental issues so that we can regularly survey the results they are seeing with various approaches, and building and coordinating our Advisory Committee.

Sharon will be playing a vital role in helping us address some of the major issues facing our families and children.

Bob

About Sharon

Sharon Anaise Haimovich graduated with a B.A. in French Literature from Amherst College. While at Amherst, she completed her premedical requirements with an emphasis in neurobiology; and she worked as a teaching assistant in this field. Based on her academics, Amherst College awarded her the John Woodruff Simpson Fellowship for studies in Medicine. Upon graduation Sharon returned to her home country, Israel, and went on to receive her M.D. from the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. She then completed her medical internship at one of Israel's leading hospitals, Souraskly Medical Center in Tel Aviv, and stayed on as a Resident in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. It was then that life took a turn--her oldest son was diagnosed with autism/PDD and a seizure disorder.

Knowing how important early intervention was for his development, Sharon postponed her medical residency to provide her son with a home educational and biomedical therapy program. She continued as the night shift doctor for her Internal Medicine Department for another year before deciding to focus full-time on her son's therapy. Since her ambition to practice medicine never waivered, Sharon has maintained her Israeli medical license and provides free medical and nutritional counseling for those in need. She is ECFMG certified.

Eight years ago, her search to help her son brought Sharon to seek the assistance of Mr. Robert Doman, Jr. at the National Association for Child Development. She has been running an NACD program with her son ever since. Admiring and appreciating NACD's work, Sharon jumped at the opportunity to come train at NACD's national office in Utah in 2010. Having completed her training, she has stayed on with NACD as Medical Researcher for the NACD Foundation.

"Caring for my own son has provided me the opportunity to thoroughly investigate the history, trends, and efficacy of the broad range of biomedical treatments for autism, i.e. diet, detoxification, chelation, nutritional therapies, and various other healing modalities. My research into this field has reinforced a philosophy I share with NACD--that often less is more, that there are no magic pills, and that successful biomedical and nutritional intervention must be individualized and administered judiciously." Through the NACD Foundation, Sharon is looking forward to sharing her extensive knowledge and personal experience in the biomedical treatment of developmental issues.
