Updates from the Board Chair

Rick Kleven, Board Chair Gilda's Club Twin Cities and Vice President Government Affairs for Thrivent Financial

Rick Kleven It's been quite a year in the history of Gilda's Club Twin Cities and I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your continued support. As the GCTC board chair since January, it's been an honor to help deliver on our mission of cancer support.

In April 2014 we officially opened our red doors to the greater Twin Cities' community. We knew we had a vision and mission worth delivering, but what we didn't know was who exactly would walk through our doors and how our program of support would make a difference to those impacted by cancer. Today we know.

We have a vibrant community of women and men spanning a variety of ages, life situations and cancers. And the truth is, for how much we have delivered in such a short time, we are really just getting started.

Insider's View of the Gilda's Club Program

Ali DeCamillis, Program Director

Ali DeCamillis For those of you who haven't been to the clubhouse and have not yet personally experienced what many of our members refer to as "the magic," here's a glimpse of what goes on within the clubhouse.

Walking through the red doors for the first time, you are warmly greeted by Debbie Johnson, one of our Gilda Greeters. These are volunteers who greet you with a reassuring smile and help make you at home the moment you walk through the clubhouse doors - we call them our Directors of First Impressions.

As you sign in, you see a group of gals in the living room, they call themselves the Knit Wits, knitting everything from socks to lap blankets. They talk about everything from the weather to how knitting has been a therapeutic distraction during treatment.

Membership Moments:
Making Connections and Serving a Community

During our May 7 Imagine a Place Breakfast we shared our new video featuring a few of our members, volunteers and supporters. We invite you to experience where "membership" means connection and how Gilda's Club is filling a gap in our community. Please share with your own family and friends.

Monthly Giving Circle Sustains Gilda's Club

Trudi Meloche, Development Director

Trudi
We kicked off our monthly giving program at our Imagine a Place Breakfast and It's already a success!

I hope you'll consider becoming a monthly giver too. Donating monthly is easy and provides Gilda's Club with a consistent and reliable source of funding that allows us to plan expanded support of our growing membership.
Gilda's Club Volunteers Make Our Program Possible

Did you know most of our programs are led by certified volunteers and subject matter experts from our community?

Since opening our doors in April 2014, we've continued adding more programs and services to our calendar. Of our current offerings, only the support groups are led by paid licensed mental health professionals, all of the other activities, workshops and classes are led by volunteers.

Many of our volunteers are professionals in their field and donate their time and talents. Thank you to the dozens of volunteer instructors who make our program possible!

Imagine a Place Breakfast - A Smashing Success Thanks to So Many

Glenda Hawkins, Volunteer and Table Host Coordinator for the GCTC Imagine a Place Breakfast

On May 7 nearly 650 people listened to our members share their stories and learned how Gilda's Club is making a difference in the lives of so many people impacted by cancer. As a long-time volunteer it was so rewarding to hear about and experience our mission in motion.

I want to thank our 75 table hosts who helped fill the DoubleTree ballroom. Because of you, we raised $150,000 and gained lots of new friends and supporters for Gilda's Club Twin Cities.

A special thanks to Jack Ohmes who performed his song Stay with Me and is donating all proceeds from iTunes and GooglePlay to Gilda's Club.

When Jack's mother, Angie, was diagnosed with colon cancer and almost died twice, he turned to music to cope with his feelings. Learn More About Angie and Jack's Story.
