Hudson Highlands Nature Museum Hosts HHLT's River of Words Poetry Trail
Student poets will be celebrated for their creativity at the River of Words Poetry Trail at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum's Outdoor Discovery Center in Cornwall from September 25 through November 13.

The River of Words Poetry Trail features eight nature-inspired poems that were created by local students from both sides of the Hudson River during HHLT-sponsored school workshops throughout the 2015-16 school year. The trail winds through the Outdoor Discovery Center at Kenridge Farm. Self-guided tours of the Poetry Trail are free and open to the public from dawn to dusk.

For more information about HHLT's River of Words program, please visit www.hhltrow.org or email Program Coordinator Elise LaRocco

Join the Hoot on the Hudson at Little Stony Point, Sept. 11
Head over to Little Stony Point Park, just north of Cold Spring Village, on Sunday, September 11, between 1:00 and 6:00pm, for the annual Hoot on the Hudson. This year's event features dozens of local musicians and bands, and is sponsored by the Little Stony Point Citizens Association.

The event is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

Forage for Fungi with HHLT at Boscobel House and Gardens, Sept. 17
While the Hudson Highlands offer a variety of peaks with expansive views, HHLT invites you to direct your gaze to the miniature world at your feet and see how many mushrooms you can spot. Amateur mycologist Joe Dizney will lead you through Boscobel's Frances Stevens Reese Woodland Trail of Discovery and talk about these fascinating organisms, their ecology and identification.

The moderate 1.5-hour hike begins at 10:00am. It is free, but pre-registration is required. Please email [email protected] or call 845/424-3358 x6 for more information and to reserve your spot.

Bear Mountain Zoo Celebrates Biodiversity, Sept. 17
It's all happening at the Zoo! Trailside Museums & Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park invites families to join their Biodiversity Celebration  on Saturday, September 17, from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Attendees will learn about New York State's native animals and plants while they enjoy nature crafts, games and activities.

While you're there, visit the zoo's animals and enjoy autumn in the Highlands!

HHLT Director Fred Rich Speaks at Boscobel, Sept. 23
Author, environmentalist, lawyer and HHLT director, Fred Rich will be speaking at Boscobel House and Gardens as part of their Fall Design Lecture Series on Friday, September 28, at 6:30pm.

Mr. Rich's lecture, based on his new book, "Getting to Green, Saving Nature: A Bipartisan Solution" will focus on the environmental movement and environmental politics. Can we save the world with half the country in determined opposition? Can Republicans and conservatives be returned to their long tradition of environmental stewardship? Join in the discussion.

The lecture will take place in Boscobel's grand entrance hall at 6:30pm, followed by a wine and cheese reception sponsored by Munder-Skiles.

Public Comment on Proposed Hudson River Anchorages Extended to Dec. 6
The U.S. Coast Guard has extended the public comment period for the proposed Hudson River anchorages to December 6.

Residents now have an additional 90 days to voice their opinions on the proposal, which calls for the designation of 10 additional anchorage grounds in the Hudson River, stretching from Yonkers to Albany - 43 berths in total. Of particular concern in the Hudson Highlands is the proposed anchorage ground between Newburgh and Beacon, adjacent to Denning's Point.

Many Hudson River communities and allied organizations, including HHLT, have significant concerns with the proposal, believing that the additional anchorages could permanently affect the Hudson as we know it: impacting waterfront tourism; presenting hazards to public safety and boating; and posing new oil spill risks.

To date, the Coast Guard has received almost 3,000 comments. We encourage you to read the proposal, and register your comments here.

Plan Your Hudson Valley River Ramble.
The Hudson River Valley Ramble is an event series held each September to celebrate the history, culture and natural resources of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, as well as the amazing landscape, communities and trails throughout the region. Whatever your interests--hike, bike, paddle, historic tour, etc.--the Ramble offers something for everyone. Visit the website for details, maps and directions.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is a community-based, accredited, non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to the protection of the natural resources, rural character and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands.
