HHLT Presents Free Community Sustainability Forum: Healthy Yards, Healthy Woods, Sun, Apr 3
On Sunday, April 3, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) will host a community forum, Healthy Yards, Healthy Woods: Recognizing the Butterfly Effect -- Individual Yard Maintenance and a Healthy Environment, at the Highlands Country Club, Rte. 9D, in Garrison, NY. The free event, scheduled from 11:00am to 3:00pm, will feature a morning panel and afternoon break-out sessions.

Expert panelists will present information on how our individual yard and garden maintenance practices impact our families' health and the environment. After lunch, interactive break-out workshops will allow attendees to learn about the morning topics in greater detail.

Participants will receive a complimentary lunch and have the opportunity to browse information tables during breaks.

The forum is open to the general public and free-of-charge, but registration is required as space is limited. Walk-ins will be accepted on a space available basis the day of the event. Email info@hhlt.org for more information or to make a reservation.
Member Sneak Peek -- HHLT Begins Take-A-Hike! Season with Bird Walk in Black Rock Forest
This year, HHLT's popular Take-A-Hike! program offers eight opportunities to experience the Hudson Highlands' natural, scenic and historic resources. Full schedules will be available in mid-April, but as members you get a sneak peek at our first offering. All hikes are free (except for Castle to River, the season's program fundraiser), but advance registration is required.

The program begins with Bird Walk in Black Rock Forest, on Saturday, April 30, at 8:30am in Cornwall. Black Rock Forest Consortium Executive Director Dr. William Schuster and Putnam Highlands Audubon Society expert birder Lew Kingsley will lead us, and point out some of the residents of this irreplaceable habitat. Bring binoculars for an up- close look. Be sure to sign up early for this popular hike!

Email info@hhlt.org or call 845/424-3358 x6 for more information or to reserve your spot.
maple syrup cropped Local Groups Celebrate Maple Sugaring Season
The warm sunny days and cold, frosty nights that we've been experiencing are ideal for sap production. Maple trees festooned with sap buckets and calendars dotted with maple-themed events are further evidence that the season is in full swing. Plan to attend one or more pancake breakfasts to celebrate the approach of spring in the Hudson Highlands.

On March 5 & 6, 12 & 13 and 19 & 20, Museum educators will guide small groups on 60-minute tours through the forest at the Outdoor Discovery Center in Cornwall, and teach all about maple sugaring past and present. Tickets are $10/adult and $7/child (museum members: $7 and $4).

TOEC commemorates the season at its facilities in Philipstown from 8:30am to noon. Activities include a pancake breakfast and demonstration of tapping trees, boiling sap and producing syrup. Tickets are $8/adult and $6/child.

Located just north of Cold Spring village, Little Stony Point's annual Maple Syrup Day will be held from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Stop by for some pancakes and real maple syrup, and enjoy local music and stories. Event is free, donations are gratefully accepted.

Glynwood Offers Two Farmer-Training Workshops
Barry Estabrook, journalist and author of Pig Tales: An Omnivore's Quest for Sustainable Meat, and Paul Willis, founder of Niman Ranch Pork Company, will lead a workshop on raising pigs humanely on Thursday, March 10, 11:00am - 3:30pm. The day will begin with indoor presentations and move outside in the afternoon, weather permitting, to spend the afternoon with some of Glynwood's pigs. Workshop fee is $25.

Good fences allow farmers to manage livestock more effectively and this workshop will prepare you to build long-lasting fences. Scheduled for Wednesday, March 23, noon to 5:00pm, it will be led by Troy Bishopp, a professional grazier for 27 years and advocate for grassfed livestock producers. This free class is a precursor to their May fence-building workshop.

Visit the Glynwood website for more information and to register.

Now is the Time to Register your Children for Local Nature-Based Summer Camps
Black Rock Forest Summer Science Camp gives middle and high school students an understanding of nature through scientific observation and investigation. Classes are developed and taught by subject experts and provide an opportunity to explore college and career possibilities in the natural sciences while having fun.

Review the brochure for a complete list of camp offerings or visit the Black Rock Forest website for more information and to register online.

The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum offers a variety of camping options for children aged 4 through 16. Age appropriate activities and field trips are designed to engage the campers and teach them about the natural world around them. Teen volunteers, aged 15 through 18, are encouraged to share their experiences as counselors-in-training.

Visit the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum website for details.

The Manitoga Summer Nature & Design Camp is geared for children aged 5 through 12. Campers will experience the joy of summertime as they unplug their imaginations and unleash their creativity, making art out of nature and in nature. The program is designed to inspire an appreciation for the natural world.

For more information, visit the Manitoga website.

Get outside and celebrate the Vernal Equinox.
The vernal equinox, Sunday, March 20, is a day of balance, when day and night are the same length. This year, take time out from your busy schedule to get outdoors and look for signs of spring, perhaps some early flowers, like snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils. Share your photos on HHLT's facebook page. We'd love to see the little gems you find in bloom.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is a community-based, accredited, non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to the protection of the natural resources, rural character and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands.
