HHLT's River of Words Summer Programs Offer Fun Outdoor Experiences
Are you looking for some fun outdoor activities for your children? Hudson Highlands Land Trust's upcoming River of Words workshops offer activities for tweens and teens.
Join ROW educator Kali Bird on Tuesday, August 11, or Thursday, August 13, from 3:30 to 5:30pm for Nature's Shadow. Kali will lead her charges for a nature hike, searching for natural objects like leaves, nuts, seeds and flowers with interesting shapes. Upon returning to Winter Hill, the group will use the nature-finds and sunlight to create unique works of shadow art. The program is geared for kids ages 6 to 11. Participants should wear appropriate hiking footwear.
Are your teens up for one last outdoor adventure before being trapped indoors for school? On Saturday, August 29, join Kali Bird and HHLT Stewardship Coordinator Matt Decker from 10:00am to 1:30pm on a Hike and Adventure Challenge. Problem-solving skills, teamwork and a sense of adventure will help the kids crack the navigational code and find their way. The program is geared for ages 12 to 16, no previous orienteering experience is necessary. Participants should wear appropriate hiking footwear and bring a daypack with lunch and plenty of water.
Each program is $10 per participant. Pre-registration is required. Email info@hhlt.org or call 845/424-3358 x7 to reserve a space.

HHLT's River of Words Poetry Trail at Constitution Marsh Open Through Aug 10
Following its celebratory opening reception last month, the River of Words Poetry Trail is available for free, self-guided tours from dawn to dusk through Monday, August 10.
The Poetry Trail, offered in partnership with the Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary in Cold Spring, is a series of unique, temporary installations that highlight the poetry of local students. The selected works represent hundreds of poems created by students from public schools in the Land Trust's mission area throughout the 2014-15 school year during HHLT's free Regional River of Words environmental education workshops.
In late September, the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum in Cornwall will host a Poetry Trail that will feature a different set of poems. Details on the fall Poetry Trail installation will be available closer to its opening.
Both Poetry Trails have been made available through a generous grant from Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp.
