HHLT's River of Words Poetry Trail at Constitution Marsh Celebrates Children's Nature-Inspired Poetry, July 12 to Aug 10 For the fourth year, Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) is pleased to announce its partnership with the Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary in Cold Spring to highlight local students' nature-inspired poetry with a River of Words Poetry Trail installation. The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum in Cornwall will host a Poetry Trail installation starting in late September.
The River of Words Poetry Trail is a series of unique, temporary installations that winds through inspiring, natural settings and celebrates the poetry of local students. The featured works were selected by award-winning poet Irene O'Garden. They represent the hundreds of poems created by public-school students in the Land Trust's mission area throughout the 2014-15 school year during HHLT's free Regional River of Words environmental education workshops. Each Poetry Trail will feature a different set of poems written by children from both sides of the river.
The self-guided tour of the HHLT River of Words Poetry Trail at Constitution Marsh is free and open to the public, and will be available to explore from dawn to dusk, July 12 to August 10, 2015. Details on the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum's Poetry Trail installation will be available closer to its opening.
The Poetry Trails have been made available through a grant from Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp.

Jolly Rovers Lead Bear Mountain Hike for HHLT, July 11
As part of HHLT's Take-A-Hike! program, stoneworkers from the Jolly Rovers will lead a hike along the Bear Mountain steps that they designed and built. Entitled Behind the Steps at Bear Mountain, the five-hour hike begins at 9:00am on Saturday, July 11, at the Bear Mountain Main Parking Lot and includes time to enjoy a self-packed lunch at the summit.
Join us and discover what went into the layout and construction of this award-winning trail project. You'll hike from the Bear Mountain Inn to the mountain's summit, enjoy the views and a self-packed lunch, and then head back down. You'll also see how a boulder is shaped into a step and learn how it travels hundreds of feet to its final destination directly from the volunteers that swing the hammers.
Space is still available for this free hike, but registration is required. Email info@hhlt.org or call 845/424-3358 x6 by noon on Friday, July 10, to sign up.

HHLT Partners with Conservation Groups to Expand Putnam Highlands Audubon Society Watergrass Sanctuary
Through a partnership with a private landowner, HHLT, Putnam Highlands Audubon Society, Scenic Hudson and Open Space Institute (OSI), over 19 acres has been added to the Watergrass Sanctuary in Philipstown, increasing it to over 67 acres. The successful conclusion of the project permanently protects local scenic natural resources and creates an opportunity for enhanced public access to this conserved property.
HHLT's Executive Director Andy Chmar said, "The conservation agreement, amended to include the sanctuary's new acreage, adds the assurance that this property will provide scenic enjoyment for the public and conserve an area of vital habitat for generations to come. We are pleased to be a partner on this project, and thank the many others involved."
