Snowflake Sculptures Available for Purchase through Silent Auction
The snowflake sculptures currently displayed near Philipstown businesses will be available for purchase through a silent auction during the Winter Carnival on Saturday, Feb. 7. Winning bids will be announced at the carnival's finale. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Hudson Highlands Land Trust and Friends of Philipstown Recreation.
Enjoy the Season at the 2nd Annual Philipstown Winter Carnival, Feb 7
Hudson Highlands Land Trust, Philipstown Recreation Department and Friends of Philipstown Recreation invite residents and visitors to join us on Sat., Feb. 7, from noon to 5:00pm* for the 2nd Annual Philipstown Winter Carnival. Kick off Carnival weekend by visiting Cold Spring's Main Street on Feb. 6 for First Friday activities.

The carnival is a two-site event, with free family-friendly activities occurring at the Philipstown Recreation Center (107 Glenclyffe Dr.) and Winter Hill (20 Nazareth Way), both in Garrison. Parking is available at both sites and a free shuttle bus will provide transportation between the two locations. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at both sites.

Planned activities include ice skating, snowman building, ice sculpture demonstration, snow golf, sledding, snowshoe demonstration and lessons, music, arts and crafts, and a few surprises. The Carnival will culminate at the Philipstown Recreation Center where there will be a raffle drawing, the closing of the silent auction of snowflake sculptures, and an indoor family movie screening by the Cold Spring Film Society. Activities will be adjusted according to the day's weather conditions.

For more information, visit the Winter Carnival's FaceBook page or hhlt.org.

*Winter Hill site closes at 4:00pm.

Jonathan Leitner Begins New Year as Full-time HHLT Employee

Jonathan Leitner first became part of the Hudson Highlands Land Trust team as a volunteer in Sept. 2012, and then as a part-time employee last January. HHLT's increased outreach efforts and land project data management responsibilities necessitated the expansion of his position as Program and Database Associate to include grant research and development responsibilities, and we are pleased to announce that he is now a full-time employee of HHLT.

"Jonathan's experience with our conserved projects and membership databases, and his attention to detail have been great assets to HHLT's mission work for over two years," said Executive Director Andy Chmar. "The expansion of his responsibilities strengthens our land conservation efforts and will result in more land being preserved across the Highlands."

Beacon Sloop Club 2015 Lecture Series Begins Jan 8 with Documentary, Bag It

Beacon Sloop Club opens its Winter Lecture Series on Thursday, January 8, with a screening of the award-winning film, Bag It, and guest speaker Sharon Rowe.

Bag It explores our daily reliance on plastic, following Jeb Berrier's quest to give up plastic bags and realization that this simple decision is more far-reaching than he imagined.

Sharon Rowe, CEO and Founder of the Eco-Bags Products, Inc., has been featured as an environmental pioneer in TIME Magazine and was presented the national 2012 Enterprising Woman Award.

The free event will be held on Thursday, January 8, 7:00pm at the Beacon Sloop Club, 2 Flynn Dr., Beacon, NY. For further information call, 845/463-4660 or visit www.beaconsloopclub.org.

Depot Docs Screens Pandora's Promise on Jan 16

Pandora's Promise asks whether the one technology we fear most could save our planet from a climate catastrophe, while providing the energy needed to lift billions of people in the developing world out of poverty.

Robert Stone's movie tells the personal stories of environmentalists and energy experts who have undergone a radical conversion from being fiercely anti- to strongly pro-nuclear energy, risking their careers and reputations in the process.

A discussion between Director Robert Stone and Riverkeeper's Paul Gallay, moderated by Andy Revkin from Dot Earth, will follow the screening.

The film will be shown at 7:30pm on Friday, January 16, at the Philipstown Depot Theater at Garrison Landing. Tickets are $20 for film, discussion and reception, and can be purchased online, or at the door.
