Like the River that flows both ways, life flows back and forth, land into people, people back into land, until both are the same.

Fred Rich

Hudson Highlands Land Trust Director

Dear Friends,

If we've learned anything over our 25-year history, it is that the viewsheds and open spaces of the Hudson Highlands cannot be separated from the people who love them. Without that connection between people and place, the Highlands region would not have survived as spectacularly as it has. HHLT is proud to have played a part in that story of survival. And, we are equally thankful that you understand and help us foster this connection.

HHLT's 25th year has been filled with conservation efforts, projects and events that celebrated the importance of working together to preserve the character of this special place. Our partnerships with property owners, local municipalities, and other conservation organizations have allowed us to significantly increase the amount of conserved land in the Hudson Highlands. We've also put greater resources into our outreach and advocacy programs to expand our reach and deepen our connections to the communities we serve.

We're poised to do even more in 2015, and with your help, we will!

Please act now and contribute to HHLT as 2014 draws to a close so we sustain this momentum. Making a tax-deductible gift online is quick, easy and secure.

We wish you all the best the holiday season has to offer.  Thank you for your support today and always,

The HHLT Board and Staff

HHLT's 25th Anniversary Book Is Perfect for Holiday Gift-Giving

Stumped for gift ideas? Stop by our office during normal business hours for some quick holiday shopping. HHLT's commemorative book, Connecting: Celebrating the People and Places of the Hudson Highlands, is a wonderful holiday gift for anyone who loves the Highlands.

For more than a year, local resident Christine Ashburn photographed people enjoying the Highlands and the landscapes they love. Our essayists have shared their stories of the ties that bind us to the land: history, food, recreation, arts and a commitment to future generations.

Connecting is available for purchase at $85 per book plus tax (orders of 10 or more, $75/book). You can order books online easily and securely, or stop by the office. Books are also available at the Boscobel Home and Gardens Gift Shop (Cold Spring), Garrison Cafe (Garrison), Putnam History Museum Gift Shop (Cold Spring), Clearwaters Gifts at Jones Farm (Cornwall), Hudson Highlands Nature Museum's Nature Shop (Cornwall) and Storm King Adventure Tours (Cornwall-on-Hudson).

HHLT River of Words Team Welcomes Two New Members

Elise LaRocco, the new River of Words Program Manager, brings strong writing and communication skills to the team, as well as a love of the outdoors. Elise has conducted writing workshops for children, and currently tutors middle school students in literature comprehension and grammar, making her a natural spokesperson for HHLT's environmental education program.
Kali Bird, our newest River of Words educator, has shared her enthusiasm for science and the environment with students during her tenure at the Carey Institute and, before that, Michigan State University. This past summer, Kali led an Orienteering Adventure for Teens with HHLT Stewardship Coordinator Matt Decker as part of our River of Words Summer Workshop Series, and is enthusiastic about sharing her passion for the outdoors with students throughout our mission area.

We are excited to have Elise and Kali on HHLT's River of Words team and look forward to 2015. School administrators, educators and parents who are interested in learning more about HHLT's educational programs can visit www.hhltrow.org or contact Elise at 845/424-3358 x7 or row@hhlt.org.

Enjoy Birdwatching from the Comfort of your Home this Winter

The Putnam Highlands Audubon Society is offering a free program on Sunday, December 7, at 10:00am in Hubbard Lodge (on Route 9, just north of Route 301, Cold Spring) on setting up and maintaining bird feeders for the many species of birds that over-winter in our area.

Scott Silver, from the Wildlife Conservation Society's Queens Zoo will outline some of the considerations for setting up a feeder, and offer suggestions for identifying some of the likely visitors to your feeder.  For more information visit www.putnamhighlandsaudubon.org.

On Saturday, December 13, at 10:00am, join environmental educator Pam Golben at the Hudson Highland Nature Museum's Discover Center (Muser Drive, across from 174 Angola Road, Cornwall) to learn how to create a molded seed wreath as a gift for the birds. Participants will leave with a seed wreath to hang in their yard.

The program is appropriate for adults with or without children, and children 7 and up. Admission is $7/adult, $5/child ($5 and $3 for museum members) For more information visit hhnm.org or cal 845/534-5506 x204.
