HHLT Celebrates 25th Anniversary with More than 330 Supporters and Friends
Commits to Preserve an Additional 2,500 Acres Over Next Five Years
On Friday, October 10th, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a Gala at Boscobel House and Gardens. More than 330 Land Trust supporters and partners were present to celebrate the milestone with past and present HHLT directors and staff. Boscobel Executive Director Steve Miller opened the evening by welcoming the Land Trust and its guests. HHLT Executive Director Andy Chmar introduced HHLT's partners and local elected officials, and was then followed by a short film by award-winning documentarian Stephen Ives on our River of Words environmental education program. Chris Davis, HHLT Chairman, rounded out the evening, talking about his own inspiration for joining the Land Trust's Board and then inviting the assemblage to head to the Belvedere for a fireworks display.
Also at the gala, HHLT Director Fred Rich announced the Land Trust's commitment to preserve 2,500 acres of Legacy Landscapes parcels over the next five years, more than doubling the private land currently preserved through conservation agreements. Leading the way, eight HHLT Board Members have pledged to donate conservation easements on their own properties.
Established in 2011, the Legacy Landscapes Project is a strategic plan that identifies parcels throughout the Land Trust's mission area that are important land protection priorities. The Land Trust will continue its work in partnership with private landowners, regional organizations and government agencies, like NYS Parks and DEC, to achieve this ambitious goal. If you are a landowner and interested in learning more about conservation agreements, please contact Katrina Shindledecker.
HHLT is profoundly grateful to everyone who helped make Friday's event such a success. If you attended, we ask that you kindly share your photos of this evening by sending them to Kathy Hamel.

Public Comments on NYS Open Space Conservation Plan Sought
The Department of Environmental Conservation and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation have released the 2014 State Open Space Conservation Plan for public comment. The plan guides State Environmental Protection Fund investments in open space protection.
The Draft Plan makes recommendations on how open space conservation will help ensure clean water, air and land for a healthy public and vibrant economy; green New York's economy; protect natural resources and promote outdoor recreation; increase and improve the visitor experience; create a 21st century parks system; and work to address climate change.
Public comment will be accepted until December 17, and a public hearing for this area will be held on Tuesday, October 21, from 2:30-4:30pm, and from 7-9:00pm. Public comments can be submitted by email to LF.OpenSpacePlan@dec.ny.gov or mailed to Open Space Conservation Plan, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233.
