HHLT and Constitution Marsh Partner to Celebrate Children's Nature-Inspired Poetry, July 20 to August 17

For the third year, Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) is pleased to announce its partnership with the Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary in Cold Spring to highlight local students' nature-inspired poetry with a River of Words Poetry Trail installation.  The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum will host a month-long Poetry Trail installation starting in late September.

The River of Words Poetry Trail is a series of unique, temporary installations that winds through inspiring, natural settings and celebrates the poetry of local students .  The 16 featured works were selected by award-winning poet Irene O'Garden to represent the hundreds of poems created by students from public schools in the Land Trust's mission area throughout the 2013-14 school year during HHLT's free Regional River of Words (ROW) environmental education workshops.  Each Poetry Trail will feature a different set of eight poems written by children from both sides of the river.

The self-guided tour of the HHLT River of Words Poetry Trail at Constitution Marsh is free and open to the public, and will be available to explore from dawn to dusk, July 20 to August 17, 2014.  Details on the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum's Poetry Trail installation will be available closer to its opening in September.

The Poetry Trails have been made available through a generous grant from Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp.

HHLT Invites You to Join the Hunt for 25 Treasures of the Highlands

Explore the Hudson Highlands and see if you can find the geocaches hidden throughout our mission area as part of our 25th Anniversary celebration.  We have been working with a group of enthusiastic volunteers, landowners and land managers to hide the boxes in areas that highlight the natural resources, scenic beauty and rural character of the Hudson Highlands. We think each of these "treasures" is worth a visit.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting pastime.  Participants use GPS-enabled devices to locate hidden containers, or geocaches.  HHLT's Treasures of the Hudson Highlands GPS coordinates, and hints, are posted on geocaching.com (with "HHLT" at the beginning of each cache name), or can be printed from here.

We encourage you to get outside and find them all.  Please remember that the caches have been placed with the landowner or land manager's permission, and we ask that you to be respectful of the area where they are located.  Happy hunting!

Get Your Hands Dirty:  Volunteer with HHLT on Saturday, July 12

Join us for a morning outdoors on Saturday, July 12, from 9:00am to 1:00pm.  Stewardship Coordinator Matt Decker will be leading work on a trail across the Putnam Highlands Audubon Society Watergrass Sanctuary and Saunders Farm, both HHLT-conserved properties.  We'll be doing some maintenance on the trail and management of invasive species.

All are welcome.  Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, bring gloves and water.  Snacks and tools will be provided.

To join us, please email Matt for details, or cal 845/424-3358 x5.  Thanks in advance for your help!

HHLT Takes to the Air

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust gained an aerial perspective of the Hudson River from a small plane through a partnership with LightHawk, a non-profit that bolsters environmental protection efforts by networking volunteer pilots with conservation groups.  Matt Decker, HHLT's stewardship coordinator, and Christine Ashburn, a highly skilled local photographer, were on the flight along with Jackson Wandres, a representative of the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail planning team.

Among other uses, the photos will be used by the multi-organization team planning the route for the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail.

Bannerman Castle Planned Artist Installation to Highlight Bannerman Castle

Imagine a new constellation over Pollepel Island in the Hudson River.  Artist Melissa McGill's proposed large-scale sculpture, Constellation, will be installed around the ruins of Bannerman's Castle.  Every evening, as the sun goes down and the stars of the night sky appear, starry lights will emerge one by one, creating a new constellation creating the past and present.

In tandem with the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail project, Constellation has the potential to boost tourism in the corridor between Cold Spring and Beacon.  To learn more about the project and how you can support it, visit the Constellation website.

Plan ahead for safe summer hiking.
Summertime, which promises long hours of sunshine, is a great time of year for hiking.  Be sure to dress for the weather (lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored), bring adequate water to stay hydrated and a snack. To avoid tick bites, wear long sleeves, long pants and socks. Thoroughly check yourself and your children for ticks after being outdoors. Apply insect repellant with DEET (follow the directions for safe application). Consider avoiding the heat of the mid-day sun by hiking before 10:00am and after 4:00pm.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is a community-based, accredited, non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to the protection of the natural resources, rural character and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands.
