HHLT Hosts Free Community Forum on Energy Conservation, Sun, Apr 27

Are you interested in saving money and conserving energy? If so, you'll want to attend the Hudson Highlands Land Trust's sustainability forum on residential and community energy conservation on Sunday, April 27, at the Highlands Country Club, Route 9D, in Garrison, NY.  The free event, scheduled from 11:00am to 3:00pm, will feature a morning panel and two afternoon break-out sessions.

The panelists will present information on four aspects of energy conservation: NY State guidelines, money-saving tips for homeowners, options for retro-fitting homes or building energy-efficient houses, and community conservation.  After lunch, break-out sessions will allow attendees to explore these topics in greater detail with experts.

Participants will receive a complimentary lunch and have the opportunity to browse informational exhibit tables during breaks.

The forum is open to the public and free-of-charge, but registration is strongly recommended, as space is limited.  Walk-ins will be accepted on a space available basis the day of the event.  Email info@hhlt.org for more information or to reserve a space.

HHLT and Hudson Highlands Nature Museum Present Wildlife Series at Hubbard Lodge

Totally Toads set for Sun, Apr 13, 2:00-3:30pm
HHLT and Hudson Highlands Nature Museum are pleased to announce a series of three nature programs that bring the Museum's expertise to Hubbard Lodge in Cold Spring.  Hubbard Lodge is on Route 9, about 2/10 of a mile north of Route 301.  If you are traveling north on Route 9, the entrance is on the right.

Families are invited to join Environmental Educator Carl Heitmuller on Sunday, April 13, at 2:00pm to learn fascinating facts about the habits and life cycle of toads.  "Toads are forest dwelling amphibians, but mate and lay eggs in ponds and vernal pools in the spring," said Carl.  Participants will meet the Museum's resident toads and take a short hike after the program in search of some in the wild.

Future workshops feature a Mother Nature Hike for Moms (May 11) and Cottontail Rabbits (Jun 8).  Workshops are recommended for adults with or without children, and for children ages 5 and up.  Admission fees for all programs support the care of HHNM's animals at the Wildlife Education Center in Cornwall.  Admission is $7/adult and $5/child (museum members: $5/adult, $3/child).  Visit hhnaturemuseum.org for more information, or call 845/534-5506 x204.

HHLT Announces Geocaching Adventure

As part of our 25th Anniversary celebration, HHLT staff is working with a group of enthusiastic volunteers to hide geocache boxes throughout our mission area to highlight the natural resources, scenic beauty and rural character of the Hudson Highlands.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting pastime.  Participants use GPS-enabled devices to locate hidden containers, or geocaches.

HHLT's Geocaching Adventure GPS coordinates (and a few hints) will be posted on our website and on geocaching.com later this spring.  We encourage you to get outside and find them all.  Please remember that the caches are placed with the landowner or land manager's permission, and we ask that you to be respectful of the area where they are located.  Happy hunting!

NY-NJ Trail Conference Offers New Way to Find Trailheads and Hikes

The trail- and tech-savvy volunteers of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference have developed a Hike Finder Map that links to their online catalog of hikes and parks.

The new Hike Finder Map displays point locations that lead to 340 hikes from 224 trailheads in 135 parks in the New York-New Jersey region.  Each map point is linked to a trailhead.  Click on a map point to find links to full descriptions of the hikes that start from that trailhead.
