Don't Miss the 1st Annual Philipstown Winter Carnival, Sat, Feb 8
Philipstown Recreation Department, Hudson Highlands Land Trust and Friends of Philipstown Recreation (FOR) have lots of fun, free activities planned for the 1st Annual Philipstown Winter Carnival this Sat., Feb. 8, from noon to 5:00pm.
The carnival is a two-site event, with family-friendly activities occurring at the Philipstown Recreation Center (107 Glenclyffe Dr.) and Winter Hill (20 Nazareth Way), both in Garrison. Parking is available at both sites and a free shuttle bus will provide transportation between the two locations. Food from B&L Deli and beverages will be available for purchase at both sites.
Planned activities include ice skating, snowman building, ice sculpture demonstration, snow golf, sledding, snowshoe demonstration and lessons, and a scavenger hunt. The carnival culminates with closing ceremonies at the Philipstown Recreation Center, including a raffle drawing, music and an evening bonfire.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors, Archipelago, B&L Deli, Boscobel, The Country Goose, Gallery 66 NY, Momminia Beads, Mountain Tops, Paramount Theater, Philipstown Recreation, Whistling Willie's, Women's Resource Center, Stowe Mountain Resort and Wilson Sporting Goods, for donating a raffle prize and offering special discounts to Winter Carnival participants. The snowflake button that you'll receive at the Winter Carnival is your passport for special discounts at participating businesses. Look for the Winter Carnival snowflake during Winter Carnival week (Feb. 8-16, 2014).

HHLT Partners with Neighbors to Protect 135 Acres in Southern Philipstown
The Hudson Highlands Land Trust started 2014 by completing a multi-step process that resulted in the permanent protection of 134 acres, and includes a public access component.
Working closely with neighboring landowners, HHLT's land preservation team shaped an agreement that forever protects an environmentally sensitive area, including the former Mountain Trace subdivision, and lays the groundwork for a public hiking trail in Garrison.
"This collaboration illustrates how individual actions will determine what the Hudson Highlands will offer future generations," said Executive Director Andy Chmar. "We are dedicated to the idea that those who follow us should enjoy the same beauty that we have during our time as stewards here."

Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail Public Meeting Set for Feb 12
The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is working with the towns of Philipstown and Fishkill, City of Beacon, Village of Cold Spring, Scenic Hudson, Open Space Institute, Friends of Fahnestock/Hudson Highlands State Parks, NY State Department of Transportation, NY State Parks and Metro North to develop the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail. The proposed multi-use, nine-mile trail will link the Cold Spring and Beacon train stations, and allow hikers and bicyclists to travel safely along the Hudson River, away from Route 9D traffic.
To kick off planning, the project team has scheduled a public meeting for Wed., Feb. 12, from 7:00-9:00pm at the Chalet on the Hudson (3250 Rte. 9D, Cold Spring). The public and other stakeholders will be asked to provide input on route opportunities and constraints for the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail.
Please register if you plan to attend the meeting. For more information visit the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail website.

Join the Audubon Society's Great Backyard Birdcount, Feb 14-17
Put those Angry Birds aside and join 300,000 citizen scientists around the world in the 17th Annual Great Backyard Birdcount from Feb. 14-17. Simply count birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count and upload your sightings here.
Last year's Great Backyard Bird Count shattered records after going global for the first time. Participants reported bird sightings from all 7 continents. More than 34.5 million birds and 3,610 species were recorded. The information gathered helps track the health of bird populations at a scale that would not otherwise be possible.

HHLT Marks Passing of Hudson River Legend
Pete Seeger, Hudson River activist and folk musician, passed away last week at the age of 94. An untiring environmentalist, Pete was also at the forefront of the labor movement and the struggle for civil rights.
His brainchild, the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, launched in 1969, continues to travel along the Hudson River from New York City to Albany as a "sailing classroom." Over half a million people have been introduced to the Hudson River estuary aboard the Clearwater, many inspired by their trip to protect the river and the lands that surround it.
