HHLT completes Three Conservation Agreements at Year End

Nearly 55 More Acres in the Hudson Highlands Protected in December
We are pleased to announce that 2013 ended with the protection of close to 55 acres in the towns of Highlands and Philipstown.  Working closely with the property owners, Hudson Highlands Land Trust completed three voluntary conservation agreements in December that fully reflect the property owners' wishes to protect their land for future generations.

The Sidamon-Eristoff family has a long history of advocating for natural resource protection and land conservation. Constantine Sidamon-Eristoff, who passed away in 2011, headed the Environmental Protection Agency's New York region from 1989-1993, and was chairman of Audubon New York in the 1990s.  His sister Anne is a current HHLT director, as were his sons, Andrew and Simon. HHLT worked with Constantine's widow, Anne P. Sidamon-Eristoff, his sister and the family to set up two conservation agreements on land in the Town of Highlands.  The resulting conservation agreements, HHLT's first on the Hudson River's west bank, continue the family tradition and protect over 17 acres of land.

Susan Coleman, a former HHLT board member, also strongly believes in the importance of protecting land in the Hudson Highlands for future generations. She and the HHLT staff crafted an agreement to conserve over 37 acres on her property in Philipstown.  Susan's property is adjacent to other HHLT conserved lands, which enhances the conservation value of the whole area.

"When private landowners choose to protect their property through conservation agreement donations, they achieve permanent conservation goals for their land," said Andy Chmar, HHLT's Executive Director.  "Communities also benefit for several reasons, including the fact that the property stays in private ownership and on tax rolls, and that future property taxes are mitigated for all through less residential development that would require additional public services."

HHLT Welcomes New Staff Member

Hudson Highlands Land Trust is pleased to announce that Jonathan Leitner joined the staff at the beginning of this year and will be supporting our outreach and development efforts, in addition to land project data management.  As a volunteer, Jonathan became an integral part of the Hudson Highlands Land Trust team, entering conservation easement data into a newly acquired Conservation Connections database.

Jonathan worked in pre-award research administration at Purchase College before volunteering with HHLT.  Prior to that, he was Land and Development Assistant at Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining.  Jonathan has an undergraduate degree in rural sociology from Cornell, and graduate degrees in sociology from Wisconsin.

Jonathan, a resident of Peekskill, stated "I'm very happy to be working for an organization whose mission is to preserve the Hudson Valley's open space, and especially one that helps protect my community's reservoir watershed."

Try some star gazing this winter.

Winter's cold temperatures make this season the best one for viewing the night sky.  No equipment is necessary--just bundle up, get outside and look up.  A telescope or binoculars will enhance the view, but both are optional, as is a reclining lawn chair.  For ideas on what to look for, watch SkyWeek

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is a community-based, accredited, non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to the protection of the natural resources, rural character and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands.
