Thank you Volunteers!

As a small staff with big ambitions, we are continually grateful to the scores of volunteers who have shared their time, expertise and passion for the Hudson Highlands with us and our members. This year, participants in our Take-A-Hike! excursions, Protecting the Highlands from Alien Invaders community forum and River of Words summer workshops benefited from community members who donated their time. The success of these and all our events were in large part due to the generosity of volunteers who helped with set-up, hospitality and break-down. And, in-office clerical projects were made easier through the assistance of some very organized volunteers.

We are extremely grateful for your generosity, and thank you for your time and support. If you're interested in volunteering with HHLT, please email info@hhlt.org or call 845/424-3358 x4.

NY-NJ Trail Conference Offers Intro to Trail Maintenance

On Saturday, November 9, from 10:00am-2:00pm, the NY-NJ Trail Conference is offering a free indoor/outdoor training session at Teatown Lake Reservation on trail maintenance.  The workshop covers an introduction to the Trail Conference and provides skills necessary to maintain a hiking trail so it is easily passable and harmonious with its surroundings.

Participants will learn assessment of trail conditions, clearing, blazing, proper use of tools and how to report any trail problems they may come across on their segment of trail. Be prepared for changeable weather. Wear your hiking boots, work gloves, and bring water.

Contact Hank Osborn at hosborn@nynjtc.org or 201/512-9348 x29 for more information.

Wildlife Workshop Talks Turkey

The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum and HHLT present the third and final wildlife workshop, Turkeys, at the Hubbard Lodge in Cold Spring on Sunday, November 17, from 2:00-3:30pm. Hubbard Lodge is on Rte. 9, about 2/10 of a mile north of the intersection of Rte. 9 and Rte. 301. If you are traveling north on Rte. 9, the entrance is on the right.

Join environmental educator Carl Heitmuller to learn information and fun facts, including why the turkey was once nominated to become our National Symbol.  "Most people don't know that turkeys can fly, so be sure to keep your eyes in the trees as well as on the ground," said Carl. Find out about the turkey's natural history and interesting adaptations. After the presentation, join Carl on a guided hike to search for signs of wild turkeys (weather permitting).

Workshops are recommended for adults with or without children, and for children ages 5 and up. Admission fees for all programs support the care of HHNM's animals at the Wildlife Education Center in Cornwall. Admission is $7/adult and $5/child (museum members: $5/adult, $3/child). Visit hhnaturemuseum.org for more information, or call 845/534-5506 x204.

Participate in a Citizen Science Program this Winter.

With many of the leaves fallen, birders can see their quarry easily, as well as abandoned nests.  The numbers of winter birds in the valley swell at this time, as well. Chickadees, titmice, and nuthatches gather together again in mixed flocks, clustering around well-supplied bird feeders. Cardinals, juncos, and white-throated sparrows scratch for fallen seeds below. Keep your bird feeders stocked and join Project FeederWatch to help scientists track winter bird populations and long-term trends in bird distribution.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is a community-based, accredited, non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to the protection of the natural resources, rural character and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands.
