HHLT Plans Cicada Hike
The Brood II emergence has become an online phenomenon.  Photos are shared on FaceBook and videos on YouTube.  HHLT Stewardship Coordinator Matt Decker is planning a hike for members who want to go beyond the virtual experience, and view and listen to these fascinating insects in the real world.

You can help Matt decide the course of this hike.  He is gathering cicada sighting information throughout the Hudson Highlands and is researching a trek to take hikers deep into cicada-rich territory.  Please contact him by email to let him know where you've been seeing (and hearing) a lot of activity.

Then stay tuned: We will contact HHLT members with the details of Matt's bug-loving hike next week.

Below is a sampling of the many area events scheduled for June. We encourage you to get outdoors and enjoy this magnificent area.

Beacon Sloop Club Strawberry Festival, Sunday June 9

Start the summer off at the Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 9, from noon to 5:00pm at the Riverfront Park in Beacon. Enjoy live music, strawberry shortcakes (baked on-site), strawberry smoothies and hand-dipped chocolate-covered strawberries. The Woody Guthrie, a wooden replica of a gaff-rigged Hudson River ferry sloop, will be on hand for free sails on the Hudson during the festival.

The Strawberry Festival helps raise funds for the upkeep of the Woody Guthrie, and for their sailing and educational programs.

NY-NJ Trail Conference Programs Help Residents Protect the Hudson Highlands
"Leave No Trace" Awareness Workshop at Winter Hill, June 20

As more people enjoy the outdoors, it becomes increasingly important to follow the Leave No Trace guidelines that help people become more aware of their impact on the environment and help them protect it for future generations.

The free workshop will be held on Thursday, June 20, 6:30pm to 8:00pm, at Winter Hill in Garrison.  Participants will receive introductory training in the skills and ethics of Leave No Trace.  Contact Hank Osborn for more information.

Invasives Strike Force Training at Harriman Camp, June 22

Invasive species threaten the health of this historic landscape by crowding out plants that offer food and habitat to local wildlife.  Volunteers will learn how to identify 14 common invasive plants and collect the data for the Strike Force using a GPS unit. Units can be borrowed from the Trail Conference.

The free workshop will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Harriman Camp in Bear Mountain from 9:00am to 4:00pm.  Please contact Linda Rohleder for more information.

Mt. Beacon Fire Tower Grand Opening Set for Saturday, June 22

The Mt. Beacon Fire Tower Restoration Committee proudly announces the grand opening of the historic Mt. Beacon Fire Tower.  The ceremony will be held at 2:00pm at the Fire Tower.  Please contact David Rocco for more information.

Mt. Beacon Fire Tower was built in 1931 on the site of an earlier structure and used by the State of New York to spot fires for five decades.  It has become a treasured hiking destination.

Common Ground Farm Offers Summer Camp Program

Children explore our relationship with food and nature through hands-on experiments, movement, games and art in Farm Camp. They will spend time in the garden, at the pond, in the field, in the barn, and along the nature trails. There will also be lots of time for tractor tag, sprinklers, and other fun games to keep cool under the summer sun.

Space is limited. Register today.  For more information, email Sember Weinman,  Education Director.
